Description:DJ Plush & Disko Dave proudly present: FUNKTION - Vol. 5

You are invited to experience another slammin' night of stellar electronic music, brought to you by FUNKTION - Ottawa's purveyors of quality beats.

Operating with an open-music policy that draws from a multitude of influences – house, breaks, electro, and techno are all in the mix – musical boundaries have been crossed giving the freedom to their resident and guest DJs and giving the night its edge and solid reputation.

With such an amazing response to our previous Funktion events, our passion has been fuelled by your support and similar desire for quality events and great music. Our goal is to help re-build the scene and a sense of community within our city. We want to provide a refreshing alternative to the typical commercial house and electronic music most clubs accommodate, and do our small part in keeping the underground alive.

With the local support and unwavering desire for quality music, we feel that our local underground dance music scene is on the rise. Adding to the momentum is the re-launch of Sunrise, which will dictate a new era and chapter in our dance music community.

This month we are proud to showcase two established and well-known DJ figures of our local scene: RICK LAPLANTE & J. BRADLEY.

========

RICK LAPLANTE

Originally hailing from Ottawa, Rick Laplante returned to the Nation’s Capital in 1998, after living in London, ON for 10 years. His involvement in the London party scene began in early 1992 with Prism Productions, a project committed to hosting intimate gatherings with good vibes and fresh music. Unable to resist the siren song of the turntables for long, Rick began basement DJ’ing later in 1992, with his first professional gig the following year.

His main musical influences came through London’s proximity to Detroit and Toronto, where frequent weekend visits to these cities exposed him to some of the most groundbreaking underground sounds heard in the world during the early 90’s. Rick has now been professionally DJ’ing for over 16 years, and throughout his career he has played alongside notables such as Richie Hawtin, John Acquaviva, deadmau5, Jeff Milligan (aka Algorithm), Holosound, Martin Villeneuve (MV), John Creamer, Eli Wilkie, Luke Morrison, Jerome Robins, Deko-Ze, The Roaches (aka Nathan Barato & Carlo Lio), Tone Depth, Stéfane Lippé, Brad Copeland, My Favorite Robot, Etienne Ozborne, Jamie Kidd, Lee Osborne, Eric Downer, The Dukes, Kenny Glasgow, Nitin, DJ Addy, Eddy Jasmin, Capital J, Alicia Hush and many, many others.

Rick’s preferred club style is anything that can be described as funky and bouncy tech-house, yet he also draws influence from his eclectic music collection - with flashes of myriad genres, ranging from progressive to electro, techno to disco, breaks to jazz and from latin to lounge. He hasn’t forgotten his musical roots from running the Detroit–Toronto corridor for years... you can always expect the unexpected while Rick blends several different auditory flavours into his DJ sets.

While Rick endeavors to provide the dance-floor with a progressive blend of electronica, and always looks to bring new sounds to the listening and dancing audience, he still doesn’t shy away from the classic underground tracks. Don't be surprised if you hear an old favourite or two thrown in the mix, as well. Good music is timeless!

Rick has been active in the local scene of our Nation’s Capital, running an weekly afterhours event, Sunrise, for its run of almost 4 years. As well as promoting events, Rick's performed many out of town gigs, such as in Toronto at Circa, Comfort Zone and Guvernment's Acid Lounge, Montreal's Beach Club and Velvet Lounge, Kitchener's Purple Room, London, and U.S. cities like New York, NY, Boston, MA and Hartford, CT. He’s DJ’d in practically every Ottawa venue, and now has his sights beyond the city limits by starting production work, with aspirations of launching his own label.

========

J. BRADLEY

Since bursting onto the Ottawa scene almost 10 years ago J. BRADLEY’s rise to dance-floor prominence has been dramatic and well-earned. He is well-reputed for dropping the most refined beats with just one motive: to move the dance-floor. He consistently delivers very diverse and dance-worthy sets characterized by energy that can get a party started, and keep it going.

J.B. has been featured alongside many great talents from Canada and the world over including Hatiras, Fedde Le Grand, Deadmau5, D-Formation, Max Graham, Adam K, Martin Villeneuve, Luke Fair, and Jody Wisternoff (Way Out West) to name a few – a further testament to his versatility and consistency.

Resident of former Ottawa nightclubs The Well, Rouge, Helsinki, Sunrise Afterhours, and the now legendary Heaven, J. Bradley has earned a rock-solid reputation and become a mainstay in Ottawa club land.

========

These guys are both kooks so this night definitely has the potential to be nuts! But remember: you should only come out if you like good music (if you like shitty music, maybe sit this one out). ;-)

And this night wouldn't be complete without the support on the ones & two's with Funktion co-founders and residents: DJ PLUSH & DISKO DAVE.

========

DJ PLUSH

In a town better known for its laid-back house style, for more than ten years Plush has brought her high energy and enthusiastic stage presence to events throughout Canada and the US. With a passion for music and an infectious personality, she has proven to be a crowd favourite time and time again.

Known for establishing “Chicks with Decks”, the 3 year weekly club night which, at the time, hailed as Canada’s longest running all-female DJ night, Plush has also hosted a radio show called “Movement” on CHUO 89.1 FM showcasing female talent, was featured in a documentary for TV Ontario, taught at a ‘DJ School’ held at ABM Records, the subject of featured articles and press releases and has even written interviews on prominent global DJs and influences in the scene.

DJ Plush is currently a resident and co-founder of FUNKTION. Although it is fair to say that she has long been vociferous in her rebellion against perceived boundaries laid down by specific genres, she deftly combines the biggest club bangers of House, Breaks, and Electro. You know a party is hot when Plush gets behind the decks and the crowd tears up the dance floor. Big beats, funky sounds, and a party atmosphere is what it's all about.

========

DISKO DAVE

Co-Founder of Funktion, Disko Dave is a fulfilling house music DJ that brings energy to the dance floor. He’s known for keeping the crowd moving and interested throughout his sets until the very last beat.

Growing up and surrounded by musicians, he began searching for new sounds at the young age of 16 where he discovered electronic music. His influences at that time stemmed from the sounds of Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, Ritchie Hawtin, Carl Cox, Madam Zu, and Dave Clarke. It was from that point on when he moved away for his studies to Windsor where he was exposed to the Detroit scene and Chicago House which changed him to who he is today. After moving to Ottawa, Disko Dave began branding his style and soon became a strong Ottawa favourite. As a strong believer of underground dance music, he’s devoted to delivering to the crowd an unforgettable experience.

You can hear him play every Wednesday night @ Lotus Lounge. He also takes part in a joint venture with Fiesta (Ottawa’s 12-hour house music party on Canada Day), and just recently teamed up with a new monthly called “House Werk”. Stay tuned for all of his events and bookings coming your way.
