Ive encountered this a few times during my travels and always inquire as I find the idea so awkward in principle. There are all sorts of unrelated and differing points of view ranging from "fuck yall jokers wasting my time, money up bitchez" to "clients can see the merchandise through the windows if they come in its because they desire our special service and that comes at a price" to "we offer equal opportunity employment to ex convicts at a lesser salary and this fee is used to supplement that as well as promote our unique business practices in hopes of raising awareness about the challenges these willing, able bodied people face when re entering the labor market." ...To each his own, at the end of the day you choose what you want to support. The power is all yours.

Not to mention the amount of times I wished I could pay 5$ to be served by friendly knowledgeable staff instead of some ungreatful piece of shit who's more focused on making damn sure your day is as disappointing and unsatisfying as his is instead of realizing that we're all in this mess together and every bit counts.

You're right, I'm sure the corporate phat cats at ebay/paypal have much more important things to do with it.

Ebay doesn't charge a dime to browse their site, and keeps about 8% of the sale. I can deal with that. ;)

It's exactly ebay and amazon that's causing shit like this, though. People come into the stores to see the products, but then go online to get them because you can usually get things cheaper online, what with them not having to hire as much staff; cashiers, security, clerks, etc..

It's stupid, but it does make a tiny bit of sense..

I know... if they keep the "business as usual" attitude, some parts of retail sales will go the way of record stores. But if they try to coerce their potential clients, they will loose. The whole point of shopping is to go from store to store to find a better model, fit, service or a better price.

However, if they where to offer an online store, they could sync up with the times and maybe recoup part of the traffic going to other on line stores.

Ebay charges the seller an 8% fee. YOu're also required to pay for shipping which is often 8-15% of the item cost. And, on top of all this, the seller is making a profit, or he/she wouldnt be selling on ebay...

A retailer has neither of those costs. Instead, they pay for showroom space, and salespeople. No offense to retailers, but that leaves them plenty of scope to be competitive with Ebay and amazon.

And when you think about it...most retailers are not in a very sophisticated operation. They buy shit in bulk and resell it using minimum wage labour. I don't know why retailers think they deserve a very high markup for this activity. Its not a very important or very impressive service they are providing, so retailing margins should be low.
I'm feeling a overhang right now..

Precisely what i was about to say. I actually did that couple times with the master-vox (electronic store) when i was buying parts for my new computer... And i felt kinda cheap because i haven't spent much there, because every parts were cheaper online. Doing that at Future shop, i wouldn't mind... But they make sure you won't by hiring people who can sell, but don't know shit about what they are selling :/

here's an idea: 1 part of the store is crammed as heck with shitty *everything* ; you can't ask a single question to a clerk, you can see the products and pay, that's it! the 2nd part look like usual or perhaps even better and that part has the 5$ deposit fee. so people will remain as "free" to do shopping. regular shoppers would loose benefits but it's better than only looking through a window.
