tell me, if you don't give a shit about mixing, just move real quick the slider from 1 player to the other, how can you teach someone to make his/her own track selection and figure out how to tweak it according to the crowd reaction/feel in 1 summer. please let us know!

I bet there's packages where a real DJ make selections with some side-selections. so that's it, the course should be called: how to take credit for real DJ work. or is there some courses about lame DJ formulas?

I learned by myself over a short period of time, enough to play out to then pick up the necessary experience and additional skills ... but I still, after 12 years, learn something new every month, like you would in any discipline.

For people who aren't patient enough, or want to start on the right foot right away, this kind of school is probably a good idea ... and I'd rather people went to school than fuck up in public for years before learning proper technique.

Song selection, though one of the most important aspects of mixing, remains fairly personal. Play what both you and hopefully the crowd would like, that's my motto. You can teach people about getting ready for a gig, to research what music should be brought etc, but you can't teach someone to have good taste in music, and I don't think at the school they tell people ''this is a good song, this is a bad song'' ... and if you can't tell what peole like in your prefered style, you probably shouldn't be DJing anyway xD

And no matter how good the tunes you have are, if you can't play 'em right, you still suck.

Anyway, with people often complaining about older DJs not teaching, or DJs being incompetent, or noobs not learning properly; DJ courses are a decent idea.
I'm feeling you up right now..

that's my point. why would I learn about painting if I have no artistic vision? I could technically be the best painter in the country with no idea what to do, what good would that be? I guess taking commissions...

so learn DJing then go take requests and play what's popular. @.@

i think lessons to learn isn't a terrible idea, it's good for people who want to give it a try before they decide if they want to sink two or three thousand dollars into something they may not be good at or even like.

remember:

the fantasy of DJing (lots of chicks, tons of free cocaine, paid for flights to exotic locations)

is different from:

the reality of DJing (Setting your alarm for midnight to go play a gig at 1 am, promoters telling you 'people don't really listen to that kind of music anymore', drunk and high people talking to you while you try to hold a mix together)
I'm feeling surly right now..

but if you do have an artistic vision than wouldn't you want to have access to art school to get some techniques down and be able to put your ideas on canvas...

honestly you guys are being cunts here... pete and the crew have been working their asses off since this thing started and it's not like their making stacks of cash either... they put a lot of effort into creating a class and training their teachers to give out the proper information to get djs started and on the right path... this means less posers with X1s and traktor doing fuckall on stage and more people in general who truly understand the difference between a shit dj an a good one and strive to be the latter

some people have a natural talent to be able to learn things on their own... others get more out of proper classes... you know that's why we have universities and shit... I really wish I'd have had this help when I started because I made a friggin fool of myself on the first couple of tries
I'm feeling forward every thurs right now..

Non?

good point!

I just wonder about those that will actually spend the $, how many will be like what was just mentioned and how many will be like I assumed: listened to a dozen albums, then either grandma offering a present or increasing his/her credit limit.

True. I completely agree but the important ones are the ones that will grow from it. It's like real school. Everybody should have full access, because some of them will be able to develop their potential harder/faster/better/stronger ;) The others will find something else.

You can't pick which one will become the next Adam Beyer from the next DJ Fred 2000 just by looking at them when they get through the door. Would be nice to be able to do so, but, no. You can't tell :p

Honestly, i don't know why you guyz are bitching so much. The guy's making a living teaching the basic of djing. Indeed, nothing buys experience.

yeah like you would know. You've played a total of 3 gigs in your life, thats one more than Paris Hilton

For your information, you do meet a lot of girls, do get offered TONS of drugs for free, never pay to go anywhere, always end up on the guestlist, and yes if you're so inclined you can get your airfare paid for to go somewhere exotic if you feel like it.

Djing is hard work yes, but it does have its perks ;)

What he said.

Besides, You would take dj lessons for the same reasons you would take piano lessons. To get better, faster.

Anyone who doesnt get that, should go back and finish kindergarten.

Aight aight, in all seriousness, I have no problems with there being a DJ school. I'm pretty sure I know a few of the instructors too.

And I don't really have any problems with anyone wanting to learn a skill, obviously.
I do have a problem with the motivations some may have for becoming one, as stated by our resident superstar wanker:

.. Or by Moog's latest advertising.

There's a shitton of good DJs in Montreal, and a shitton of wannabe-poser-famehags too.
I let my feet be the judge.

Hopefully this DJ school WILL turn some lame DJs into proper ones.
