 Coolness: 166485 | Haven't been since the year I got arrested, and ironically a little brutalized ... was acquited years later, mostly 'cause it took years to develop the case (also, the police had no case - heh)
I'm still happy people are protesting, but you won't see me there, 'cause being surrounded and arrested w/ hundreds of other people just 'cause 3 twits threw something at someone/something, not my idea of a good fuckin' day. However, this year the protest is more pertinent than usual, since the police shot several people this year, all of whom were armed with a knife, or less. It really takes a dozen cops with a dozen guns to take down one dude with a crappy knife? Really? Aren't these people supposed to be trained to deal with that kind of situation? Apparently not, so it's shoot first, and ask questions and disarm later. Anyway, real glad COBP is around, but I ain't participating in another play-victim-and-change-nothing protest. |

 Coolness: 108745 | I went once, I wanted to protest ; I expected to march around for 1-2 hours then occupy some busy place for a couple more hours. it didn't last even 20 minutes before someone tried to break a windows and not even 15 minutes later they were breaking shop-windows on st-cat. I thought it could have been only a few bad apples but when I saw it was not isolated, I got away.
they can get arrested every year and go fuck themselves with such a shitty attitude. protest riiight. |

atleast 4000 people attended and i dont see whats wrong breaking windows of shops, shops are part of a bigger problem, capitalism, which we must get rid of. mcdo, 2nd cup, adidas, all these, id like to throw rocks at them everyday.. |

I was downtown around Peel and the Eaton center and the people actually breaking stuff and throwing stones at the police were little hip hop hoodlums aged 16 to 18 some of which I recognized from the gang commiting the muggings in that area. 
I also saw the same kid you see in the picture with the grey baseball hat with about 15 of his buddies wearing scarfs over their face wandering around Parc Emilie Gamelin looking for people to rob. Later as I was exiting the library around 8:25 they arrested a bunch of students in front of the library doing NOTHING except yell their slogans. After that it pretty much died out |

If you check the video "Scenes from the middle of the rally" featured on the right hand side, you can clearly see the guy with the red tracksuit pants from the pic at 1:34 run up with the guy with the grey hat and start kicking the back of the police window. Dumb idiots, there you have it, photo with rocks, video tape of them destroying a police car. Those kids are getting arrested for sure lol... |

Ultimately, all this does is gather arguments for the general public to be against you. Anti-police brutality parade is synonymous with uselessly violent protest and vandalism... general public views it as an excuse for a riot with no political statement behind it. You wanna get rid of capitalism? Fine! A fucking rock is not a cohesive argument to convince people that capitalism is failing... it's an argument to say that your anti-capitalism movement has nothing to propose to replace capitalism but lawless individualistic nihilism. |

Anyway, people are sheep, so as soon as one person acts violently, anyone with a penchant for destruction will jump at the opportunity to do the same ... so what we get every year is a protest will a majority of good intentions get fucked up and escalate in anarchy by those who yearn for more than just posters, slogans, and an FB petition page ... heh. The real problem is that the targets aren't always the right ones, and the extremely negative impression it all makes on the people (the general population/normal civilians) who those ''in-the-know'' are supposed to be convincing/informing of the atrocities/murders/corruption/brutality committed by the police force, here in MTL and around the world. As always, good ideas and positive (even necessary) messages get horribly mangled in the hands of humans when it comes time to take it to the streets ... .. . |
