The Coming War...

things are getting pretty fucked up

we seem to be on a speeding train whose final destination is going to be war in the middle east and the wider region...

as of today the arab league has said they are in favor of sanctions against syria, which in of itself isn't a big deal however it seems to set the situation up for the NATO allies to legitimize some sort of intervention into syria on humanitarian grounds...Indeed the French are pushing a plan for just that and they say the humanitarian forces will need military protection...

the problem with all of this is that you re not dealing with a Libya or Iraq or an Afghanistan here, which were comparatively isolated. If there is some sort of intervention in syria it becomes hard for Iran not to get involved (along with their proxies in lebenon (hezbola) and the occupied territories (hamas)) also there is the russian naval base at a place called 'Tartus' on the syrian coast, it's the only military installation they have in the Med. There are reports of a russian fleet anchored off the coast of syria and that the russians are in the process of delivering a surface to air missile system to be installed at key points (the coast and the capital Damascus) over the past week.

Syria has come out and said that any intervention by Nato powers into to syria for any reason (say for humanitarian reasons) will be met with force and this will mean missiles launched from syria to anything they can hit that belongs to nato or their allies, this will of course mean israel. How israel will respond and what measure of proportion they will employ is anyone's guess. Remember though, Israel had no problem what so ever sending in air strikes to take out what they said was an illegal nuclear site under the NPT back in sept 2007. Indeed they destroyed the facility.

Also of equally worrying potential practically on the other side of the world, you had this out of pakistan today "Pakistan will reassess its relationship with the U.S., NATO and the ISAF after Saturday's attack by NATO forces that killed 24 soldiers at two military checkpoints". This is troubling because you have had a simmering conflict on the pakistani border for about two and half years, it culminated with the bin laden stunt of May 1st (the US special forces SEAL Team 6 raid deep into pakistan to take bin laden and his family out). Interestingly right after that China came out and reaffirmed their now decades long commitment to the Gov in Islamabad saying "we support Pakistan as our own' and shortly after that it was reported that China delivered an ultimatum to the US basically something like the following "you mess with pakistan you got problems with china". Apparently it was delivered by the Chinese to the americans in the usual chinese way, not bombastic not provocative just quietly at one of the US-China military conferences over the summer. I think that Pakistan and China just finished joint military exercises last week as well. How long is it going to be before Iran and Pakistan wise up and decide they are going to push for better relations and perhaps even a formal military alliance especially if Pakistan moves away from the US and NATO strategically like they say they might.

so given all of this, I want to know what people think about the deteriorating strategic situation, is this going to lead to war? if so how big? what will be the scope of the war, how long will it last?

I don't have time right now to get the sources for all this stuff, but i will leave you with at least a few links to get you started, but you can find all this through google searches and by looking through the BBC's and CNN's sites. I think I can back up every factual point I have just made with documentation. If you re interested in something in particular just ask and I can see what I can find for you.

My prediction is the following: we won't make it to the spring without some sort of confrontation either in the eastern Med (expanding to include Iran and their proxies and perhaps russia in the backround) or something in the sub-continent involving Pakistan and NATO (perhaps the US can also bribe india into to striking from the other side as well and this certainly will bring China in who see's india as a rival and doesn't like the US-india nuclear deal since it started back in 08 i believe) perhaps we will have both at once expanding into a broad Eurasian conflagration.
