I just got a second hand iphone 3 for like 120$ no contract. Fucking great deal. And the phone provider generally gives you a monthly discount on your plan if you don't take the subsidy on a new phone, and they don't make you sign a contract, so the phone pays for itself. Check out this awesome pic I took with it a couple hours ago:

I've had the HTC Hero for about 18 months; it's pretty neat but rather buggy (mostly with internet: too slow, sometimes just not working).
Apps work fine, I mostly use it for GoogleMaps, Gmail, the compass, and regular cell features.
Got no more problems than since the first two months, so it ages pretty well.
I think HTC is not bad, but I hope newer models are better than the Hero.

I've heard the big-screen Samsung is very good.
I'm feeling the flow right now..

Absolutely get something Android-based - as close to stock Android as possible. I've got an Acer Liquid E and I'm really loving it, but I've also hacked it and got it running a custom ROM so it's a lot smoother than the stock AcerUI.

If you're on Fido, they have the Nexus S that I've heard a lot of good about - it's got a couple of advantages over the one I have - 16 gigs onboard, but no MicroSD card slots, so it's a bit of a trade.. It's also got the new NFC chip for stuff like the Google Wallet/mobile sharing thing that's going to be getting used some more in the near future.

Typing on a touch screen takes a bit of getting used to, but you'd be surprised how much you pick it up once you give it a shot. Took me a couple of weeks but now typing with it is so fucking smooth.. really easy to pick words with the predictive text..

You *could* get one with a physical keyboard, but really that's just going to add to the size of the phone - the touch screen is really good at typing.

Telus also has the Nexus S (better than the Galaxy S), and the HTC Desire is also supposed to be one of the best Android phones which Telus carries.

If you're with Rogers your best bet would be Sony Ericson Xperia Play or Arc - the Play has a pop-out PSP-style gamepad for playing games, which makes the phone thicker.. The Arc is the same phone but without the gamepad, and it's supposed to be really thin and have great performance (hell the thing plays PSX games)

Either way, I'm with you on the 'fuck the iPhone' thing, but that was pretty obvious from the get-go , but honestly after a couple of weeks with an Android phone I just really felt like I was using something from the future.. Really amazing performance.. This thing loads programs like fucking lightning.. The screen also is fucking crisp as hell.. seriously, reading e-books on this thing, the font really looks sharper than print on paper.. Any time I show someone my phone, the first thing I do is load up an ebook.. it's fucking crazy.. This 3.5" screen is about 12 times the resolution of my first computer's monitor..

Lemme know what your carrier is so I can look at the selection they've got, I'm on an Android forum so I can go through reviews and shit fairly quickly to let you know about which phones are worth getting.

well there's nothing that really uses a stylus anymore.. you CAN get styluses for the newer phones, but nothing really has the 'old' system like they had on the Palms of the 90s where it would convert your hand writing into text.

The phones also mostly come with an accelerometer, so it knows if it's "up" or on it's side, and the keyboard adjusts. For the life of me I can't type with it in the "vertical" mode, but putting it on it's side the keyboard is much wider and a lot easier to type on.

LOL I don't think he wants to learn a whole new way to type and carry around a bunch of hardware that will make him look like an uber-nerd

Typing on a touch screen really is very surprisingly easy, but having haptic feedback helps also, which most phones should also have as an option... basically it does a quick vibrate every time you hit a letter/key/icon/etc

If you REALLY just want to write out things, you can get a Paint-style app and a stylus (has to be one that can specifically work on Capacitive screens) and scribble away, but I don't think that there's anything that translates handwriting to text for Android.. at least not yet.. I'm gonna go take a look actually..

Honestly... Unless there is something really specific that you want to do with it that can't be done with an iPhone, I wouldn't fuck around with android at all.
You're better off waiting till the new iPhone release and getting that.
Everybody I know who has bought an android phone has either regretted thier purchase or exchanged it for an iPhone within 30 days.
Mainly because of batterie issues as there is not a phone on the market that lives up to supposed benchmark specs aside from the iPhone 4.
I don't want to sound like I'm hating on the droit phones either, as I think open source is fucking great, but really... It's kind of a pain in the ass to have on a phone.
Its a private thing and any shit head can atractivly package mal ware for you to install in an open source market and can affect your phone coming through for you when you need it the most (as a phone).
So ya... Druids are buggy pieces of shit with inferior build quality.
Go iPhone or wait to see if the next generation of windows phones are as game changing as speculated.
I'm feeling republican right now..

It's a damn phone...not a way of life, or a clothing style, or a way of expressing one self. Therefore, I chose to go with what I find the most practical. The Iphone does it's job pretty well for me: it's simple, straight to the point, and offers me all I need.

I'm not saying that the iphone is better than other smart phones...but I'm used to the apple interfaces and don't have any technical problem with their products.

The other phone I was thinking about at the time when I got mine was the Google phone (Nexus one). But it wasn't out yet and I decided to go with the Iphone. I'd say you should check the Nexus if you don't wanna get an Iphone.

Fuck Smartfones.

I sell them for a living.
I KNOW nobody really needs them.

And I also know for a fact that 80% of the Iphones I sell at werk are purchased without Data.
So yeah, it's not popular cuz it werks good or has amazing features.

It sells cuz its in style to be a stupid fanboy.

My weapon of choice:

Does the job.
Fun interface.
Zero nonsence.

Well Mark, I personally love having a smartphone (well, an Iphone in my case, but it's not better than any other smartphone I guess) cause I need to have a calendar, access to internet and that I like the possibility to have apps that do lots of useful things (having a desjardins access on your phone, a gps, a QR code reader, fun games for when you're bored in the subways and all those not-so-useful but still enjoyable things...)
I'm feeling the farce right now..

Well, Simon, I wasen't pointing fingers.
Was just stating my opinion about techno-dependant peeps.

Did I mention how I think it's funny how fan boys always justify their usage when someone disagree with the usefulness of such things? I could not care less about if they're useful or not. So it's not me that needs to be convinced.

Altough, I must conceide, if I was racking up a 90$ bills on something, I shure as hell like to validate my expenses.

I myself like the iPhone. I jailbroke mine a while back to see what's available to make it more to my liking as I would my computers at home. I now have a ton of nice customization's and apps for free that work for my lifestyle.

I vote people gets phones that suit their lifestyles.
