would someone please explain why does psy parties always have the same deco? is there any rational explanation to it?

I see that the posters have Hinduism but why? I'm quite skeptic on the number of people that actually devout themselves while dancing, yes devotion, not just dropping a pill and being high comparing this to years of meditation, prayer & beleif. the streamers look could possibly look something like fungi if you were minute ; is there a reason or people are just more high when watching Microcosmos?

what I see is consumerism. taking shortcuts to a lifestyle, pretending to live your life according to it, then when something else excite you more, pretend you've reached the height of its enlightenment.

it's "psychedelic", "trippy" and "spiritual" in a non-western/non-extremist way. It's just another uniform to blend in, like how junglists back in the day were all about the camo/military clothes and ADIDAS track gear while all the parties would have camo netting hanging from the ceiling, or how the candykids have their phatpants and candy bracelets.

It's spirituality in the most materialistic way possible short of becoming a scientologist.

It started off fairly honestly; before it became psy, it was called Goa, because that's where it mostly came from and where most of the parties were, and Goa is in India, so some of the people were using their spirituality and beliefs in the artwork. When it migrated over, the image came with. Sure some people might actually believe in the hindu mysticism now, but it mostly just comes from really wanting to fit into a certain scene.

If you hang around something long enough and want to fit in, you'll believe anything - it's the joy of our animal-instinct pack-mentality.

HELLO, I'M NOAH'S USED CONDOM AND I WOULD LIKE TO WRITE A HUGE WALL OF TEXT AND BE ALL SNOOTY WITH LOTS OF WORDS AND STUFF:

It's not consumerism or a lifestyle shortcut. It's an essential part of being human.

We form groups, and part of that involves creating symbolic identifiers that show that we are different from the people outside of our group.

You can profit from mankind's tribe building reflex by commodifying a group's symbolic identifiers, but that doesn't make sporting these identifiers a matter of consumerism, because people are just as likely to adopt them in a pre-capitalist, pre-market society as they are in a market oriented society like ours.

It's also not a shortcut to a lifestyle, but an integral part of belonging to a community. You'll find that these symbolic identifiers are part and parcel of all sizable social groups. They're essential to group cohesion. There's a reason every country has a flag, and it's the same reason that psytrance parties all borrow from the same symbolic well. Communities require a common culture to exist.

Psytrance kids use OMs, trippy patterns, and Mushrooms as symbolic identifiers. Punks use metal studs, circle As, and mohawks. Conservative Republicans use crosses, Jesus fishes, and don't tread on me flags. Everyone does it. Even you. There's certain things you wear, or say, or do that identify you as belonging to a particular social group that exists in a specific place and at a specific time in human history.

There's basically nothing different between your cultural identifiers and the identifiers that psykids wear. It's just a matter of scale. The more dominant the culture, the less likely you are to notice its identifiers. It's the benefit of being part of the cultural majority: your identifiers are so ubiquitous, you start thinking that they're natural and authentic, while identifiers that belong to minorities are seen as foreign, artificial, or inauthentic. And by minorities, I'm referring to any group of people who share symbolic identifiers that diverge from the cultural majority.

Anyhow. That's my story. And I'm sticking to it.

No wait. Maybe it's all a lie! And everything I said is actually the exact opposite of the truth.

Who knows. I'm just a used condom.

I'm feeling erect right now..

You wanna know why?

Most parties we do on volunteer basis, we get NO money, we buy our personnal materials, we get at the party at 12 we leave at 12 for next to nothing.
And when we do get money we buy new materials and keep next to nothing for ourself

And yes we are devout, we live for the divine and leave our ego's to be the last thing on our importance list.

So if your ego is not happy about how we see reality

How about you give us 1000$ budget per party so we can suit your little wants?

How about the painting we buy OUT OF OUR POCKETS costing 500$+ each

Still not happy?

DON'T USE YOUR FUCKING EYES!

We don't

'' what I see is consumerism. taking shortcuts to a lifestyle, pretending to live your life according to it, then when something else excite you more, pretend you've reached the height of its enlightenment. ''

Exactly. WHAT YOUR EGO SEES and HOW YOUR EGO LIVES

enjoy your new objects and its instant happiness

NoahsUsedCondom yes you're right, I identify with the metal community and sometime meet people that will say the name of the band on a shirt in a screaming manner with gestures, as s/he hope that I reciprocate making a little temporary cultural bubble right there and then but I don't give a fuck about that, I just see it as theatrics, at the end of the day, the music prevail. if I look for style and it happen that I get inspired from a style, so be it, it's not to fit in. thanks for your input, I didn't see it like that, I saw it as a marketing ploy disguised as something more.

I was finding it funny that if his efforts in deco weren't motivated by ego, that he'd react in such a violent way.

Goes to show, some people are playin' a part.

How can you see psy party deco as a marketing ploy? Have you ever been to a psy party?
Much of the deco is DIY and its not about marketing. Its about creating a tippy atmosphere with what you have.

...and what Noah's Used Condom said.

First of all, let's be clear. Psy parties don't always have the same deco. They share the same themes and ideas, yes.

Sure, hinduism is one of these themes, but if you take a step back you'll notice it's not only hinduism, but consciousness in general. Therefore, imagery taken from religious and mystic traditions, mixed with some cosmology ideas, animist/shamanic concepts and technoid graphics.

To be honnest, I don't think most people in the scene get the ideas behind the symbols and their meanings.

The reason for all this mix up of symbols is that we don't take them for their explicit definition but more for their archetypal symbolism. A Buddah isn't only the symbol of a branch of philosophy/religion, it is one representation of Nirvana/enlightenment/dissolution of illusions. I'm not a buddhist and still can understand and enjoy the symbolism there since I believe in some of these concepts.

As I said, I know that most people in the scene don't get "it" and aren't really interested in spirituality. Then again, the younger crowd present on [ rave.ca ] isn't necessarly what represents best the psytrance scene as a whole. And to be honnest, I doubt even the majority of hindu people are really interested in true spirituality... and they still use the mystic/religious imagery as a cultural glue.

Cosumerism? How is it any different from any other culture? We have our own temples, places of rituals, we just don't name them that way because of the stigma associated to these terms and because I think we prefer the firm affirmation of individual spiritual freedom rather than organized beliefs (the downfall of organized religions).

Sure, the themes doesn't touch everyone, but I guess if it can inspire some people it is better than nothing (and hey, let's be real, Shiva is fucking badass).
I'm feeling the farce right now..
