again is this for studio masterisation or just mixdown of djmixes. cause really you could have teh best soundcard in the world , if the machine (pc) doesnt use it to its full extent or is overloaded from being too old , really , hissy would still be least of my concern , hissy could still be bettern than 1980s - 1990s fostex 4/8/12 tracks tapedecks . unless its mp3 , then yuk-hissier than those old tapes.

but really one of my friend got a newmark mixer with one usb in and one out. think you can use this as a sound card , if anything that could be a cheap yet not radioshak cheap solution than , and way better than the only mic input present on his laptop. it all depends what you feel comfortable with and need. you cant have it all , and still buy nothing. you either go full blown , or you compromise or you just dont.

I can second that... RME is the shit.

And as for the edirol interfaces def. not recommended, but if you found a good deal on one used I don't see why not... how bad cant hey really be?

Also if you want to use a firewire device you should get a firewire expansion card sort of for your laptop. Make sure it uses a texas instruments chip set and your good to go.

I used to kinda believe in Edirol's interface as a salesman but 7/10 would come back for that one and very good reason: Not Stable on any Os. It doesn't sound worst or better than (let's say) M-Audio or Presonus or Focusirite but always the same exchange/refund/not-happy-customer issue was the stability of it. For the ones who got it running fine, *thumbs up after lots of OS/drivers trouble shooting* YAY PARTY!!! for the others who were on their own good luck. Woopeedeepdoo! As Roland (yes Edirol is a Roland byproduct) you're own your own.

BTW, Dont't touch ANYTHING from Avid. (PRO-TOOLS, M-BOX, ETC.)

Fuck I have an old m-audio audiophile I'd give you Liam, I think I paid like 160 for it 4 yrs ago, but it's FireWire, so I don't think it'd be any use to you. For your needs it'd be perfect. but check out the m-audio cheaper lines. If ts just for recording mixes, most of the suggestions in this thread are way too advanced.

Hmmm seems I can't find it on the m audio site anymore, maybe your local craigslist or kijiji for something like this

Yeah I also have an M-Audio Audiophile and it's perfect to record mixes and samples. There is a significant lag, though, and no real-time monitoring (excepted while recording with some software, but then the lag is even bigger). This soundcard has been discontinued for years already... but the quality is perfect for what I'm doing with it: listening to music, recording mixes (monitoring with the second output of the mixer), and sampling movies/music/wtv.

The unit you just posted is USB not FireWire craigy... Which might be a good solution to Liams problem.
RME makes amazing stuff...
Really pricey though... Might be overkill recommending a interface that costs more than a new comp.
Personally if I was gunna spend that much I'd go for the apogee or metric halo...
But I'm also a Mac guy... So that would be my obvious answer.
Honestly I'm thinking a little Mbox is Liams best bet if he's not buying a new comp any time soon.

Mbox is a fairly ordinary soundcard (absolute crap considering the price) and the only valid reason for buying one is if you absolutely must run protools. Not to mention half the price you pay for an mbox is for the bundled protools software.

On a side note the forthcoming avid mbox cards are a bit better and the new protools 9 will work with any sound card...only took em 9 versions to figure out they were losing ground because of their proprietary policies. go avid!.. wan wan wan wan.

Amen.

Murdock: there's no overkill when we're talking about the ears, eyes, legs, hands and brains of your DAW. And you know it as much as i do, prolly better. RME and Metric Halo stuf IS time proof even thru OS time flow.

hey thanks for the offer mang - if I was in MTL I would take you up on it. I do only need it for recording mixes and sampling right now, but as I said I've almost paid off an AKAI MPC 1000. so I'll have that soon, so I should get one that is good for the MPC as well.

obviously if I was rich I'd get some crazy state of the art one.. it would be interesting to hear a comparison.. the same mix / track whatever.. recorded into a crap on-board sound card like what I've been using VS something really high end, to hear the difference in quality.

haha =)

ok so now I wanted to ask.. I talked to the guy today told him my situation.. he said since I need a soundcard *and* also will at some point make the step to Serato or Traktor, then I should just get that now and it would kill two birds with one stone

Serato is 675, the Serato 24 bit new verion is 770.... however.. he is getting some Traktor Scratch Pros in to the shop very soon and Native Instruments is offering a deal of half price.. so instead of 660 plus tax I would only pay 330 bucks plus tax.

so.. what do you guys think? what is your opinion of Traktor Scratch Pro and do you think it will be a good solution to my soundcard situation?

imo,
serato's speciality is imitating vinyl... and it's very very good at it
traktor's speciality is going pushing the enveloppe of dj'ing further (better effects/looping and such) but the timecode vinyl rig is slighly less stable... it's good... but not as good as serato... on the other hand there is a shit ton of mad controllers ranging from 100$ to 1500$ to do the job of two turntables making gigs alot simpler and reducing the amount of plugging you need to do...

either way, both sound cards are decent for what you wanna do with them... serato has the advantage of bridge where you'd be able to record your set in seperate tracks in ableton... which I feel is relatively useless unless you find some way to record your fader movement in midi... and you'd need ableton for that

at half the price, I def go with traktor
I'm feeling forward every thurs right now..

thanks man. you've sold me on it in terms of practicality. and 330 > 675

can't wait. as it stands now I only have one Pioneer 800 CDJ to go with my Tech 1200s.. will be nice to finally be able to mix a set of all digital tracks / samples as well as the vinyl. I've got loads of tracks people have sent me on .wav and 320 and no way to mix em, so this is money well spent
