so ya -I need to buy an external soundcard - can spend around 200 bucks maybe a bit more. any recommendations? for now I am going to be using it with a Gateway NV54 laptop running Windows 7. mainly to record DJ sets and for sampling or whatever

your not gonna get much for 200$

Best bet is to make sure it has windows 7 drivers / support and has the ins/outs you need.

What do you need it for anyways>? That might help narrow the search

everything works , just get something compatible with your machine , if you want to record for making records to be pressed somewhere then get more dough else , just be shure to get something asio or asio compatible.

24bit could be overkill , while you might need it idk what you do mang

ok. well i certainly dont want to scrimp on quality. if i have to spend more i will. I want something proper for a change from some of the cheap tinpan soundcards i've used in the past.

right now.. mainly for recording DJ sets, also I do lots of sampling records and movies etc, & whatever messing around with production i get into. I'm getting an Akai MPC 1000 soon as well

basically I dont really know what to get - just want good quality as I've never really invested in a good soundcard before

This one is pretty okay, plus you have mic/instruments input if you want to record some stuff, let's say bass lines by your black friend Mikael ;)
Line inputs to record your DJ sets,
Midi in/out to use your MPC 1000 in the future.
They go around 300$ on the net.

Yeah I was gonna suggest the same, but I def. wouldn't call it quality.

But it'll do the job for a while, and I guess that's what you need. The next step up in quality is probably at about the 800$ mark, you'd probably be better off spending that money on a good pair of monitors / headphones for now anyways.

Check out Edirol's interfaces too I heard they weren't so bad.

I woudln't go with edirol...ua-25 vs. fire box, firebox has better pre-amps and da's and is 20$ cheaper

250$ at moog...

only thing to watch out for is firebox is firewire... you also have the audiobox USB as an option at 200$

btw, I looked around... moog really has the best deal on this card... I've looked for it used on the web and couldnt find a better deal
I'm feeling forward every thurs right now..

The firebox has been discontinued for a little over a year now, replaced by the firestudio mobile that is more expensive and should run you around $359 give or take. For $200 you can go for m-audio fast track pro that has more options or the presonus audiobox usb that has less options but better hardware. There is the new motu microbook for about $249 thats pretty sweet aswell, not as high quality as the rest of their line but still a fantastic card for the price. Maybe try buying something used, kijiji/cragslist, you'll get more bang for your buck.

thanks for all these suggestions guys.

Rawali when you say I have to watch out for firewire what do you mean? and also.. I dont think I have a firewire port on this Gateway NV54 here.. looks like I have to buy some adapter card or something?

I will check this audiobox USB thing on the web now. too bad I checked Long-Mcquade near me here in Burlington (outside of Toronto) and they dont seem to carry those fireboxes. I might have to go to Toronto to get what I need to Steve's Music or somewhere.

ah .. we posted around the same time hehe

ok ya I will look into that. check around on kiiji or craigslist. I see peeps selling those fireboxes for 150-200 bucks used

hah... did not know that... either way, I'm pretty sure I say a couple at moog the other day still...

and yeah liam, what I meant by watch out for firewire, is if you don't have firewire than firebox is not an option...

btw there's also moog in Toronto, 442 Queen St West

hope that helps!

You don't need anything too special to record dj sets, but your comp is going to limit your options due to the lack of fire wire and down the road it may make you want to upgrade your whole kit, because USB interfaces are known for being unreliable.
If you will be working heavily with your mpc.
The Mpc has multiple outputs (6 I think?) for recording so you may want to take this in mind when choosing your interface, as it will save you the trouble of recording MPC parts 1 by 1 into your DAW.
personally I would suggest checking out digidesign's stuff and see if they make a protools unit that fits your needs, as a MPC and protools would be a very nice little set up.

NOTHING USB. Just say NO to usb, kids, worst than meth.

Kaylan: Presonus FB is still available on their website, but the site is prolly not up to date.

Bad_Chemistry: I used to sell Edirol interfaces. They're awful. Real garbage.

i agree usb is shit when the card has a better protocol than the computer can reach.

3.0 should be fine to some extent [BUT FOR THAT YOU NEED A COMPUTER WITH USB 3.0] , esp if you restrain for watching porn with your mastering / recording machine

cool man thx - very good advice. see my situation is.. my one laptop is being fixed.. and this one is just impossible to record on at all.. the soundcard input is way too primitive.. so I am dying to get something fired up cuz I want to get a mix done ASAP and right now unless I hook up the tape deck and record an actual mixtape I'm S.O.L.

but I should probably think about it for a couple days instead of jumping in and buying something that wont be good in the long term. so i really appreciate all these points of view
