As I'm sure very few of you are aware, we lost a legend in the Canadian breakcore/IDM/raver pop scene this week in a tragic and awful way that I'm not at liberty to discuss. He was declared dead on Tuesday night and we thought he was going to make it. It's fucked.

Many of you may have no idea who this is, but I'd appreciate if you refrain from saying anything stupid in this thread. This guy had more talent in his middle finger than most people have their entire lives. If you don't like the videos posted then stay out of the thread, because to me and a lot of other people this is heartbreaking. I wish I could do the kind of shit he was doing musically but don't envy the lifestyle he was living to do it.

The following are some of his best tracks. If you like give him a nod, pay your respects, but no hate please.

A couple of actual videos with Carl and Jesse from the three-piece form of BDK, a bit hard to look at Peter and not get choked up in this, especially given the irony of this number:

And my favourite, the track that has seriously been making me lose my mind and break into tears:

The hit single - because our baby has gone away... bye bye...

This guy was super-cool and then hit hard times. He was just picking shit up in his life when he passed away, and honestly it was a shock for it to happen now and not during his days of darkness. I don't know if any of you can feel this but nobody else sounded like Peter, and I think the legacy he left behind is a sign more of us need to drop some fucking amazing lyrics over our shit instead of being all cookie-cutter and trying to rinse good wobbles all the time. Be original fuck. If you pass away tomorrow do you kids want to be remembered as one of many or the one and only?

So any of you out there who loved his music and can't believe he's gone, all those of you just discovering this with this post, even you haters out there who are going to slag the man over his vices, turn these tracks on, turn it the fuck up and dance like there's no tomorrow.
I'm feeling caps lock right now..

You see, there you go already. Who cares if it was a repost? I did my own eulogy because I don't hang out on this board a lot anymore. Please stop being a negative prick every time you see an opening, this is not the time or place. I'd repost it a million times if I have to.

Love that tune.

But to be fair, Erik, I haven't seen any form of disrespect in the other thread (or anywhere, really), so your post DOES appear somewhat defensive.

But you seemed to know the man closely, and for that, my most sincere condolences.

The EDM scene lost something huge indeed.
I'm feeling (^^)y! right now..

I said I didn't need to hear any hate and it came from exactly who I expected. Last time I wanted to do anything with BDK he tore the guy to shreds because he's jealous that he only knows how to mix shitty DNB, and started saying his live act sucked etc. You think I want someone to come and fuck with me when I have to deal with a dead friend? What a piece of shit.

Peter was a brilliant musician. I'm happy i got to meet him and see him perform many times.. This is incredibly sad and really makes me realize that any second, any one of us could be gone.

Wow...way to over-react to Host's post. Calm down...for someone who wanted no drama in this thread, it looks like you're also the one who might have started it.

I had the pleasure of hearing him play a couple times but never knew the guy. Its always sad when the community loses someone so dear too early. He was very refreshing to hear, with a very distinct style in both his dj-ing and producing. Definitely a pioneer within the genre rather than a "me too" DJ. He will be missed. RIP
I'm feeling a overhang right now..

RIP Peter <3 BDK 4evr

I feel very lucky to have found SMERK ;^) in 2002 which introduced me to Peter (aka DJ Marquis) and Duncan (aka DJ Skeeter) and I fell in love with their sound and style and subsequently the underground tekno, freetekno, and breakcore scenes in Toronto. Peter gave me a copy of his first demo which was was dark, industrial, hardcore with some bouncy bits and beautiful melodies. I loved his twisted sense of humour and incredible ability to connect with people. His songs with simple honest lyrics and popthat seemed very strange next to the hard and fast angry music from DJs like C64, Skeeter, Plague, Nwodtlem, etc but still it totally fit and became a sort of cultural phenomenon

SMERK SLUT 4 LIFE... I even have a membership card.

<<uhh dunno what happened but here is my full post... >>

I discovered SMERK ;^) in 2002 which introduced me to Peter (aka DJ Marquis) and Duncan (DJ Skeeter) and I fell in love with their sound, style, fuck-off attitudes, and subsequently the underground tekno, freetekno, and breakcore scenes in Toronto. I faithfully attended every SMERK party, and signed my membership as SMERK SLUT 4 LIFE... and enjoyed sitting in the sideroom at Resistor (at the Big Bop) watching the psy goths walk through the door confused at the harsh speedcore and breakcore sounds, and then turn around and leave.

Peter gave me a copy of his first demo which was was dark, industrial, hardcore with some bouncy bits and beautiful melodies. I played that CD nearly every day for years till I was worried it had worn out. It had a sort of intoxicating love sickness that I couldn't get enough of. I loved his twisted sense of humour... my fav track on that disk is "Not a God" which he told me was made using a sample of a girl getting fucked in the ass.

His next release, Perverted and Proud was totally different and contained songs with simple lyrics, surprisingly pop-like downtempo "girly" music, and seemed very strange next to the hard fast and angry music from DJs like C64, Knifehandchop, Skeeter, Plague, Nwodtlem, ...but still it totally worked, and became a sort of cultural phenomenon. I'll never forget the IV lounge show, which was the first time I'd seen him and Carl and Jesse put on wigs and play as a band. The tiny bar was packed to the tits and as soon as they went on the place erupted and everyone was screaming along to the songs, moshing and thrashing in total chaos.

Every BDK show after that was like an attempt to relive and revive that feeling and sense of connectedness we shared... singing and moshing to "Yeah Hell Yeah" and "Baby's Gone Away" with everyone together was a sort of nostalgic inside joke shared with everyone and anyone who wanted to be part of it. and it wasn't just BDK shows, we sang when other DJs played BDK tracks... and when BDK CD's were played on road trips, and kitchen parties, living room dance parties in Montreal.... for years BDK was a connection not just with Peter but with an entire community of friends and freaks around the world. This connection will carry on and Peter will live forever in our memories and hearts.

BDK also told a story that noone wants to hear... the bitch he couldn't pitch, the pain and miserable reality of drug addiction and it's grip on many of us. The way he sang about this vulnerable gaping wound many can see in ourselves and around our scene in a way that made it almost tangible and was absolute pure genius. As if we were all fucking and loving the same whore.

We have lost an amazing artist, a cultural icon, and a true friend.

RIP Peter <3 BDK 4evr

I'll never let you go.

With mad love and respekt,
Petra
