Ok, I was having this conversation with a buddy of mine tonight and the debate was about weather the most popular djs are in fact the best djs

or

If a lot of it just has to do with marketing and being popular and much less to do with skills.

I think it depends on what the crowds for the specific scenes are expecting..

People who are fans of scratch DJs like Q-Bert, Craze, Birdy Nam Nam, etc. aren't really going to be impressed by someone that mixes two tracks together - and the flip side of it; people who are into DJs that solely mix (trance or psy for example) will be totally unimpressed with someone scratching or beat-juggling since it "takes away" from their vibe unless done discreetly or extremely smoothly.

There's a lot of room for cross-over though.. some people can appreciate all aspects of it, but in the long run, the DJs that get booked are the ones that play the music everyone likes listening to, or the ones that put on an amazing show.

IMO if you've got a good sense of track selection (or just download the weekly Beatport top-10 every week) you can get by with not having as much skill, as long as you just cater to what everyone wants to hear.

So in a way, yeah, the DJs that get the most bookings are the ones that play the most accessible music, and don't necessarily need the most skill, because most of the time people are too trashed to notice or care, they just want to go out and have fun to some good tunes.. But if you're going to upload mixes online or release anything, you need to up your game and make sure you've got the skills, because people are going to be listening to it "every day", and not necessarily when they're totally trashed and in party-mode.

When you're a local you can get away with not having skill more so than when you become international.

Well according to the rant line this week most Montrealers listen to dubstep and heavy metal

seriously though, what is "what everyone wants to hear"? 80s, Dubstep, Electro or House or something else?

well, it depends on the crowd. I doubt you're gonna get a huge party going being one dubstep DJ at a house party..

I for one know that if I played music like this:

I'd be getting booked a lot more than I do for playing music like this:

He doesn't even mix these days anymore. I don't feel like looking for it, but there are a few videos of him "mid mix" when the CD skips, and both the tunes skip the same way and stay beatmatched with each other.. So either it's an incredible, one-in-a-million coincidence that's happened 4-5 times, or he's just making his mix in advance in Ableton, throws on a CD, and spends a few hours pretending to tweek the EQ.

I saw that vid. sad yet so funny. I wonder what lies behind this: is he too cheap to buy decent blank CDs or a decent CD burner?

Sad, and apparently worth 100k to be booked :\

When he played Ultra he got paid 100k, plus a private jet to fly his friends over to the show.

Honestly though, its all about marketing at the end of the day, you look at any famous person, its the clothes, the hair, the style, a certain sound, niche markets.

Tiesto's PR guy was genius in a way, he came up with the ultimate catch phrase

"Best Dj In The World"

And then hammered it into the skulls of millions of kids

Marketing is hugely important considering 80% of dj'ing is an ego game now, just like acting or being in a band.

Humble beginnings is what helps people see through any superficiality because they KNOW where you got your start and that your skills could overthrow any haircut or outfit.
