Hey guys i need some opinions please.. As some of u know i am a dj, i love what i do and wil do it as lond as i live... But the question i have is when does a dj ask to get paid i mean i know i have to get my name out and do freebies and stuff but in the long run music costs money needles cost money transportation costs money and when i do a freebie it comes out of my pocket!!! But i am i guess nervouse to ask for some sort of payment.

I am not saying u have to empty your pockets to me but does nayone have any advice on how to asked to get paid!!!!Just to cover transport i guess and maybe a couple extra bucks. I don't want to be greedy but i think that it is reasonable what do u guys think????
I'm feeling on a diffrent level right now..

Well you can ask for your transpotation to be paid as from now, I mean it's just normal, but to get paid for a gig, I'd say it depends on the promoter, many will offer to pay you anyways. You should also check who gets paid for an event, and who doesn't, if you're the only one not getting cash that kinda sucks... gear, tunes and time mean money, it's just fair.
I'm feeling sleepy right now..

its like in anything, someone is interested to book you, well your salary should depend of your experience, and what speciality you will bring to the party.

in my head, not everyone will agree
but less than 5 booking, you dont nececarely want to get paid, just to get your name out
5 to 15 = 50 $ or under
15 to 30 = around 70$
more than 30 around 100.

+ out of town fees(gas and everything)
+ more if you do live act, or something special
+ ALLWAYS 1 guest, no matter what
+ possibility to bring your own alcool, if not partly or completely paied by the promoter
+ depend on your name, if your a known producer, or artist, you can get an extra cut since you will be playing you own stuff, or original stuff, never heard before.

and when the promoter is asking you to play at his party, just say your price, there is nothing wrong with being paid for a service that you give, if hes not happy, then he can book free dj's that will bring nobody at his party.

of course exception applies, example when its your friend the promoter, then charge what you want/what he has to offer, but just dont accept un-paied bookings all the time, you will never be able to have a pay.

its not about being greedy, buisness is buisness, its showbizz.
i know some promoters that will agree with me, and maybe others will not.

but its my opignon, and i work that way, and everything is fine.
I'm feeling promiscuous right now..

the best trick is to find someone who's gonna deal your gig for you... so like that you don't feel bad... that's why agent and booking agency are awesome.. if you cannot have someone else... start a new e-mail address and create a character who gonna take care of that... alot of big european dj are doing that when they don't want to be exclusive to an agency... hahaha somethimes it's even happen that peeps in a promotion team are like:" hey say hi to mary" hahaha but mary doesn't exist...

i have a project i'm slowly thinking/developping to taking care of america talents and export/represent them... and finding gigs in europe for them... a kind of agency but much more cool.. america have so much talents it's just suck that europe's so far :( hehe

good luck getting pay..
I'm feeling hitched right now..

It's basic pricing. Figure out a price based on different factors (experience, gigs, promoter, transportation) and worst case scenario, the promoter will say no. Some from there you can either lower/deal something out or just look for another gig. After a few gigs you should have a good idea of what the average "honest" promoter is ready to pay for you.

I second stunna.

I'll add that any DJ that has played a couple gigs should never ever play for free again.
Even then, if your first gigs are well organised events, you should ask for money.

(You should play free only in gigs were everyone else is doing it for free, as a favor to the promoter).
I'm feeling empathetic right now..

Unless your a beginner, its a charity event or your helping a friend out, don't play for free.
Also, don't think of it as "how do I ask for money"... Money should be a given. You need to take yourself seriously before anyone else will. If the promoters are not expecting to pay the DJs, then the quality of music is clearly not that important to them. Even when I was doing Tuesday nights at Saphir and there was almost no one there, guest DJs were always paid at least $50.00.

Or use this rule of thumb I just made up: $1 /attendee /hour

From what I know.....
DJ nobody ever heard of: $0-50
Local who is somewhat known: $50-100
Local who will draw people based on there name: $100-200
Local who is known and has a release on some decent labels: $200-300
Popular local at a Big club/event or after hours: $200-600
Out of town DJ: $600+
Tiesto/PVD: $20,000

Plus take into consideration:
Number of DJs
When you are playing (Prime time vs. opening)
venue
promoter
length of set

I say djs should be paid based on how many people they will bring to an event... If you don't bring anyone, don't expect to be paid... Your dj name should promoter itself and if it does not then why would anyone want to book you.

I'd say you should be paid 25% of the money you bring into a party... So for every 10$ ticket **you** sell you should get $2.50... So in order to get 50$ payment, you should bring in 20 **paying** people to an event...
I'm feeling nuclear right now..

well i'm talking about in general... and a survey would help promoters know who people are coming for... i think it's a very good idea... after all would you not want to book a dj who brings people...

I dont think it would work online, nor at the actual event... maybe at the ticket sales point and make those frisky bastards work for their service charge ;) :P

I think any good promoters usually got his ear to the grindstone and subsequently knows who to book and for roughly how much once all things are considered.

I dunno much about this, But I get the feeling you should spin for free until someone offers to pay you, then, you got yourself a base price to charge y`know.

I mean you can`t go around and bug promoters to put you on their parties AND pay you.

On peut pas avoir le beure ET l`argent du beurre.

basically if you want to be paid(in realtime)you might as well find a residencie
in a normal club and at least there you get steady cash and on top of that u get to
challange & experience yourself to different genres that u normally would have shit opun!and from there u finance your shit(needles, joints, sunglasses!!!joke!)and play
at underground parties!but you have to put things in perspective,we dont really
play in parties that r that expensive.so its hard to get a descent pay but transport
fees should be a minimum.if u feel exploited dont do it!
me i have a policy of giving the same share to all dj s,maybe im a comunnist.
I think i have a solution we should gather all djs from mtl and have them all
dance if they cant dance we ship them to ontario.i ve known lotsa dj s that r not
that good but have made it through tactics & p.r!
so yeah its a good thing to keep it as a hobby but if the money door knocks open it!
I'm feeling l.o.v.e right now..
