What i am looking for:

I live in the city, so i need a city car. (Small, nervous, cheap on gaz)

I will use the car mainly to get to work, visit family or get to my chalet (dirt roads but not in bad shape). (Laval, and no the new metro does not help me). I usually walk when i have to go around the city.

I drive like europeans (nervous, fast and zig zags)

I dont care for ricedup cars, but i will not buy an ugly car

I dont have children or need huge trunk space.

I do enjoy a bit of luxury.

I dont care for a 1000000 watt sound system.

I would like a convertible, but i understand it sucks ass in winter, so its not a big must, especially if the price goes way up.

I dont mind buying used (not too old), but i would rather buy new.

I have 40-45k CAD to spend on the car. I wont go over this.

I wont buy a shitty american car.

suggestions:

My fav car is the Mini Cooper S (Convertible or Not), because i really like its look, handling, size, and luxury. But alot of ppl are telling me for the same kind of money i could get much more. I dont know much about cars, so i'm asking everyone. (hence the post) I found out ppl have opposite opinions about same cars, so the more ppl give me theirs, the more i'm informed.

Other suggestions i got from ppl are:

Mazdaspeed 3 or 6
Acura TSX or CSX
Used BMW 3 series
Used Lexus 250
Volvo S40 or C30
Used Nissan 350z
Used Audi A3
Infiniti G35
Subaru WRX

The majority of ppl told me to go for G35 (but its rwd so sucks for winter, and high mpg) or WRX (awd so great for winter, but high mpg)

i tried comparing them all but i fail to see how i lose getting a mini cooper s (2007).

I'm not dead set on the Mini, but so far it is my #1 choice unless someone convinces me there is a better car on which to spend the same amount of money. The Mini with all the options i want is 38k. 42k if i get the convertible, but i read that the safety numbers go waaay down.

thanks in advance for your suggestions, tips, comments.

buying a car is the single least thought out decision you'll ever make. Gas prices are soaring and will continue to, meanwhile parking is increasingly hard to find, it destroys the environment and with the rate at which China is growing, in ten years there won't BE anymore fuel. Get a bike.
I'm feeling it right now..

There aren't that many used Audi A3 and 350Z... and Lexus I250 (some I300 maybe...)

Anyway Audi and Acura are the worst for gas consomption...
I think Nissan are way too expensive for what they offer, compare to any other brand.
Used B-mers (BMW) are fun but get ready to spend some time & money at the garage...

How old are you ? if your awnser is 40 or over, keep the Volvo in your choice...
"I wont buy a shitty american car." Word to that!

I'd say go for Lexus or Subaru ;)
I'm feeling fired up right now..

Blablabla. In ten years there will be plenty fuel. Maybe in 30-50 years its gonna be scarce. As i said, i NEED a car to get to work. I need a car to get to my chalet. I'm not gonna ride a bike for 4 hours every day to go and get back from work. I have access to a parking space. I go opposite way the traffic goes.

I did not ask IF i should buy a car or not, but i knew those kind of post would spawn.

I'm all for the environment, and i have not used a car for 12 years, prefering biking and walking. but now i got no choice.

I am 30 (well in july) and the new volvo C30 is aimed at younger drivers. But it is essentially in my list to please my father who is a volvo addict.

I was told used BMW (2004-2006) are actually never in the garage.

In your case I would choose a Smart or a Renault Twingo :)
A Mini Cooper is about the same excepted it's less comfortable and you have to bend to fit inside if you're a little tall
I'm feeling phd powa !!! right now..

Volkswagon Rabbits are considered good bang for the buck, cheap, good on fuel, efficient, the parts are expensive, but shouldn't need anything serious done for a decent number of clicks...

Toyota has some nice little hatchback models for cheap right now, very fuel efficient and not bad looking, though personally I've never been a fan of centered dashboard readouts...

Mercedez actually has the b-class which starts at I think 30k, decent little 4 door hatchback, the first ever affordable mercedez on the market, its worth taking a look at...

Otherwise, honda as always makes great small cars, decent engines, very good engineering and excellent resale value...

Ufot-my 2 cents
I'm feeling flip the bird! right now..

I very recently did all the reaerch for buying a car under 30k

The best overal car i found was mazda 3 sport gt, the sedam 3 has bad side crash reults
its good on everything, safty, gas, longevity, apreciation, emergancy handeling

acuras did bad on safty

nothing wrong with hondas, just sick of the "eh bro my ferrari sticker makes my honda go faster bro" noise

ifi didnt care about debt id go for a prius or camry hybrid, but i dont feel like debt for the next 3/4 years

40k: check a mazda 3 speed. it's like 30k all incl.
small, luxurious, and good mpg.
very nervous.

don't blink. lease it.
For something that doesn't gain value, you are always better off leasing.
Buy a house with that cash down. or invest in something that gives you more than the interest rates than leasing... ;)market is at 12% right now...
I'm feeling charu right now..

personally, there is only one car I dream of one day owning that isnt even on the market, but Im on the mailing list, and if the bank actually backs me(haha, ya right) I may one day be on the waiting list for a 2008 Dodge Challenger....

Its the remake of a classic muscle car, and one of my all time favorites. It will be horrible on gas, but god, its just so sweet and loud and powerfull! It would make me a very happy man...
