Mountain View police have returned six marijuana plants,
lighting equipment and a doctor's statement supporting use
of the drug after seizing the items from the home of an
AIDS patient. Advocates of medical marijuana use say the
case is the first of its kind. Last week, police
confiscated the plants and paraphernalia from Edward
Willis, 44, who smoked pot to treat AIDSrelated symptoms.
But police changed their minds after conferring with Santa
Clara County district attorney, who said anyone who
cultivated marijuana solely for medicinal purposes would
not be prosecuted.
