NEW YORK (AP) A shootout in the parking lot of a McDonald's restaurant left
a U.S. Customs agent injured, one crime suspect dead and another wounded.

Investigators described the Wednesday evening firefight between two
undercover federal agents and suspected drug dealers on Manhattan's West Side
as a sting operation gone bad.

The wounded officer was a 39yearold customs agent temporarily assigned to a
Drug Enforcement Administration task force, city police spokesman Robert
Samuel said. The agent, whose name was not available, was shot in the
buttocks and was in stable condition at Bellevue Hospital.

Officials said the agent was posing as someone who wanted to launder a large
sum of money and had set up a meeting with some men who said they could
arrange it.

But when he and another agent arrived for the meeting, four men got out of a
car and opened fire, apparently intending to steal the money, said Treasury
Department undersecretary Raymond W. Kelly, a former New York City police
commissioner.

Federal agents stationed nearby rushed in, arresting two other
suspects.
