SCOTLAND YARD DETECTIVES FACE FURTHER QUESTIONING

Anti-corruption police were today continuing to question two Scotland Yard
detectives about a series of allegations including drug peddling and robbery.

The men, a detective sergeant and a detective constable, were arrested
yesterday in a dawn swoop by the Yard's recently-formed CIB3 unit at their
homes in south and south east London after a four-month investigation.

Officers have been probing 12 allegations against the men - including
claims that they conspired to supply opium, cocaine and cannabis, stole
12,700, committed robbery and attempted to pervert the course of justice.

The detective constable, who had served with his colleague in CID units
across south west London, also faces additional allegations of handling
stolen goods and perjury.

Both men were suspended in June this year after their homes were searched
by CIB3 officers as part of an investigation into corruption allegations
against Met officers serving with the South East Regional Crime Squad.

The arrests came after a survey revealed that the Metropolitan Police has
the greatest number of officers known to be under investigation for
corruption or dishonesty among the 43 police forces in England and Wales.

A straw poll for a national newspaper found the Met accounts for 51 of the
108 officers suspended.
