The best thing one can hope for in the wake of this tragedy is the reimposition of the Assault Weapons Ban (which George W. Bush let lapse in 2004). Outside of this, don't expect any new gun control laws in the foreseeable future. Washington cannot even pass a simple budget....let alone anything else. And remember, we had a sitting member of Congress last year from Arizona (Gabby Giffords) who was shot point blank by a gunman and NO piece of gun control legislation was introduced in the aftermath.

BTW, there are actually more legally held guns (310 million) than people (300 million) in America.
