[insert obligatory "YOU KNOW WHAT'S REALLY TRAGIC? THE THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE DYING FROM HUNGER IN AFRICA" comment]

Call me heartless, but the more I read about this (Amy's death), the less tragic I find it. Shit happens.

But yeah, being glad for someone's death's pretty harsh. Well, okay, maybe you could be glad for Hitler's, back in those days. Right?

As to not feeling bad for her friends and family: I have no idea what they did for her. If they tried anything. But I am of the opinion that there are people that are beyond any help but their own. And I don't think that people should sacrifice their own life (because figuratively, it can very well get to that) for people who won't help themselves.

Abusing drugs is pretty much committing a slow suicide attempt. And, well, while I value life very much, I don't find it sacred.

L'information c'est l'arme et le bouclier numéro un.

Garder les gens dans l'ignorance de peur qu'ils se servent d'une arme? Pfwah.

I was already posting in the thread.

So even if people are posting, they may or may not be considered manipulative in your eyes. Good to know!

That a joke, right? What kind of nonsense is that?
I rarely participate in new threads, I can spend days at a time only refreshing the "participating new threads" page, and most of the time I don't feel like bothering to read new threads.

Surely I'm not the only one not reading the entire forum "cover to cover", so to speak. O_o

In that case, ehm...
I can't remember the last time it happened to me! I must be blissfully oblivious.
I guess I would remain strictly polite, without warmth, depending on the gravity of what happened.

She's not saying not to yearn it, just to keep it under control. Which isn't bad advice, as letting one's desire to get laid lead his/her life is bound to get him/her in trouble.

Still waiting on a clear question/statement from the OP. If the question is as simple as it seems, the answer is pretty much obvious: "just say no and kick them to the curb" :p

Otherwise, +1 to Scott and Pat's posts

With our lifestyle, we're all likely to know some people with various degrees of addiction, while many more keep drugs as a form of entertainment while living an otherwise balanced life.
Among the people I know, there are some who have successfully overcome addiction, and some who just keep saying that they should do something about it and never make more than a feeble attempt at getting better. Some snapping at the people surrounding them for not, basically, doing all the work for them.
I can be extremely supportive, but I don't believe in coddling people who won't help themselves in the first place.

I understand that it isn't easy to overcome an addiction. There are choices that need to be made to succeed that are harder than just quitting the substance(s) itself. In many cases, this means putting a cross on a good many friends. At the very least, some major lifestyle changes will be needed (if you want to stop taking drugs, you most likely can't be around people doing them. Obviously, you can't go to raves).

In Amy's choice, it might have meant changing careers, too.

One friend who did succeed (as far as I know - I don't see him anymore (we'd been out of touch for a few years already when this happened), but I keep in touch here and there through social networks) sent a note to a bunch of people a while back, explaining that he would not be able to see us anymore, that he loves us, but had to make a choice - that he realized his life was in danger, and he chose life. I was extremely proud of him.

I don't know enough about Amy to know whether she made genuine attempts at getting better. I don't know her at all. The single fact that makes me cringe about her is her famous rehab song, which to me sounds like glorification of poor life choices. That, I can not respect.
Unfortunately, we'll never know if, had she survived long enough, she would have gotten over it. So yeah, I can't say I have much compassion for her as she was (seemed to be) when she died. But, as cold as it may seem, it looks to me like a good opportunity for people who are not in control of their drug use to wake up.

You can be happy. Everyone has the potential for happiness in them. Burrying yourself in a cloud of god-knows-what might numb you, but it's the worst possible way of achieving this.

Update » Niji wrote on Mon Jul 25, 2011 @ 12:39pm
Hm, yeah, "glorification" is an exageration, but still... it's refusal to help oneself and making a song about it still irks me.

"They tried to make me go to rehab but I said 'no, no, no'"

Take the hint if you need to. Take a good look at your own habits, and really THINK of the consequences. Are you in control? Death is pretty much final.

(I am NOT targetting anyone in particular, or everyone in general. But there is bound to be people who don't manage their drug use as well as they should.)
