July 18th, 2008 For Immediate Release Hello to Stereo fans worldwide, Montreal’s world renowned Stereo Nightclub was the victim of a fire on Thursday July 3rd shortly after midnight. Luckily no one was hurt. While smoke and soot damage was considerable, the club is far from being a total loss. Only the club’s infrastructure was affected and our famous sound system was mostly unharmed. The largest repair workload will be related to the reconstruction of the walls, floors and ceilings. At Stereo, the unparalleled support we have received over the years from its patrons, staff, or artists has always been stellar, but in these tough times it has never shined more. Without at doubt, our fans are really the heart and soul of Stereo and will unquestionably ensure its continued success. Without you, the club wouldn’t exist. This is why we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your outpouring of support during this period of mourning and rebirth. We have received heartfelt messages from around the globe from music lovers worldwide vowing to join together to rebuild a home perceived as a Temple dedicated to Diversity, Harmony, Music, Peace & Love. Stereo is working hard to reopen its doors as quickly as possible. We will have to wait for the investigation into the criminal fire to be concluded in order to begin work after the Construction holiday ending August 4th. Meanwhile, the adjacent Stereobar is still open and has served as a satellite venue for all our residents and guest DJs. This past Saturday Victor Calderone accompanied by Danny Torrence amazed the crowd in one of the most intimate rooms in the city boasting an incredible sound! Our terrace on Ste-Catherine has been open for a few weeks every Thursday and Fridays from 5pm to midnight, as well as Saturdays and Sundays from Noon to Midnight. This is an ideal space to spend some time outside with friends and get the latest news on the re-construction. Rest assured we are working to get Stereo open as quickly as possible for you. Despite the terrible act that has occurred, we will be rewarded with a brand new club just before we start our 10 year celebrations in November. We’d like to take this time to thank all of our loyal fans. Have a wonderful summer! Sincerely yours, The Stereo management ~~~~~~~~ About Stereo --------------- Stereo nightclub is an afterhours club in Montreal, Canada which primarily features house music. It opened its doors in 1998 and was voted #5 of the top 10 nightclubs in the world by Muzik magazine (October 1999). It was the only North American club on the list. In 2008, Stereo was voted as one of the top 20 nightclub in the world in DJMag's Top 100 Clubs Poll for the past 2 years. Most of the world's leading DJs have played at Stereo, but the club itself boasts an impressive roster of residents as well. The doors regularly open at 2 AM and usually close around 10 AM but can sometimes be open as late as 3 PM the next day. The afterhours section of the club is always open on Fridays, Saturdays, & Sundays. The club is located on 858 Ste-Catherine East street. It is co-owned by house DJ & Producer David Morales and Scott Lancaster. Major international DJs such as Danny Tenaglia, Satoshi Tomiie, Sander Kleinenberg, John Digweed, Roger Sanchez, Armin van Buuren, Mark Farina, Victor Calderone, Carl Cox, Desyn Masiello, Benni Benassi, DJ Vibe, Frankie Knuckles and Erick Morillo have all played at the nightclub to name but a few. History -------- The nightclub was originally established in 1998 to become the pulse of club music in Canada. The complex, which operates mostly as an afterhour establishment, also includes a separate bar area and hosts live music acts, with a total capacity of up to 1,100 people. The room itself is purposely built and engineered for dancing. Stereo's inner walls were strategically placed three feet away from the outer ones (custom-designed as a "box in a box") for studio-level acoustic perfection. The dancefloor itself actually floats on strategically-placed shock absorbers, helping prevent sore legs from an all-night dancing session, thus maximizing the enjoyment of the clubbing experience. The original sound system was created and installed by club legend Angel Moraes. It has now been significantly upgraded by David Morales with help from our friends at Integral Sound. The current configuration has changed to a digital concept yet still includes a vintage UREI mixer and retains a clean and clear sound. “No great décor, no big VIP area, not even amazing lights,” lends Hernan Cattaneo. “But the biggest and best sound you can humanly imagine.” “Stereo in Montreal is every DJ's wet dream!” laughs Sander Kleinenberg, clearly an admirer. “The soundsystem is unique and the vibe during the infamous after-hours is legendary. There is simply no place like it anywhere in the world and some of my best DJ memories so far lay in that amazing DJ booth. If house was a nation, would it be Germany or America? The deep house output of Deutschland is now so good, that’s a tough call in 2007. Labels such as Innervisions, Mojuba and Leibe*Detail have been breaking down and building up the American house template with the attention to detail of Japanese engineers studying American cars. And like Japanese cars, the model that Germany is producing these days is giving the original a run for its money, none more so than Dial Records out of Hamburg, Lawrence’s longtime label which has been quietly releasing top quality, Theo Parrish obsessed house music since the year 2000. But we’ve come to talk to Efdemin, aka Phillip Sollmann, producer and DJ who has released a string of rated singles (‘Lohn & Brot’, ‘Acid Bells’, ‘Just a Track’) and a debut artist album on Dial over the last twelve months. Efdemin was in London for the Sud Electronic night alongside Lawrence, and we hooked up for the interview in Hoxton Park on Saturday afternoon, a lazy sunny location which matched both Efdemin’s music – which happily straddles the border between techno, New York house and German minimal – and his relaxed character. Beforehand, I was worried that my questions might seem out of sync with where Phillip was at, but the tone soon warmed to match the weather and we enthusiastically chatted about deep house, bleepy minimal and Efdemin’s journey back to dance music. : : [ www.residentadvisor.net ] |

[ www.aureliaentertainment.com ] New York, NY (June 11, 2007) – The world’s #1 DJ Paul van Dyk is back with a dynamic new effort that spotlights his incredible talent as a producer and recording artist. On August 14th, Mute will release the long awaited new original album “In Between,” which van Dyk feels is his most personal and strongest album to date. The album features a wide range of collaborations including David Byrne of the Talking Heads, Jessica Sutta of the Pussycat Dolls, Ashley Tomberlin from Luminary, Alex M.O.R.P.H, Lo Fi Sugar, Rea Garvey of Reamonn, Ryan Merchant and Wayne Jackson. The first single “White Lies” will be released July 31st and features vocals from Jessica Sutta of the Pussycat Dolls which confirms van Dyk’s cult status as one of the most relevant artists and producers in dance music. Van Dyk says,“I had a lot of fun working with Jessica. Her lascivious voice and sexy attitude reflects the theme of the single perfectly.” Paul van Dyk’s innovation in music production is matched only by the selection of Cuba as the location for the album's artwork. “I’ve always been a fan of the movie Buena Vista Social Club,” van Dyk says. “When I finally got to visit Cuba last year for the first time, I felt so very deeply inspired by its atmosphere and the people, that I wanted to capture some of this feeling with me. This album is very different from what I’ve done in the past, and so is Cuba it seems. It’s a country where time has come to a complete standstill, and yet people seem so very happy." To kick off the album’s official release in the US, Paul will be meeting fans at an in-store appearance at New York's Virgin Megastore in Union Square at 7PM on Tuesday, August 14th. He will also perform for a record fifth consecutive year at New York's Central Park on Friday, August 17th and Saturday, August 18th. On special occasions such as the Central Park performances, Paul will be joined by guest performers from the album [drummer, keyboards, vocalists]. Paul van Dyk received a Grammy nomination in 2005 for Best Dance/Electronic Album for his original album “Reflections” – this marked the first time NARAS recognized this category. His original productions from “Reflections” have been synced into major motion pictures such as Into the Blue, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, television’s Entertainment Tonight and MTV's Cribs international ad campaigns for Motorola, HBO, Land Rover, and most recently for Jeep this spring. With over 3 million albums sold worldwide, van Dyk travels the equivalent of circling the globe over 16 times each year to sold out performances internationally. With an average of over 130 gigs per year, Paul performs to audiences of over 3 million people yearly. Aside from his musical activity, Paul van Dyk has always dedicated a significant part of his life to politics and social justice: from his youth, when he fled over the Berlin Wall to the West, to his children’s charity in India’s Mumbai, and his partnership scheme with the German Red Cross to help poor children in Berlin. In 2004, van Dyk was the only electronic artist involved in a nationwide tour with the Rock The Vote campaign, where he joined the likes of Bono, P Diddy, the Black Eyed Peas and George Clinton in campaigning for America’s youth to sign up to vote in the presidential election. He most recently received Berlin’s Medal of Honor (Landesverdienstorden) in recognition of his work with Ruckenwind, a charity organization he founded dedicated to helping poor children of Berlin. The complete track listing for “In Between” is as follows: Haunted White Lies (featuring Jessica Sutta) Sabotage Complicated (featuring Ashley Tomberlin) Get Back (featuring Ashley Tomberlin) Far Away Another Sunday Talk in Grey In Circles In Between Stormy Skies (featuring Wayne Jackson) Detournement New York City (featuring Ashley Tomberlin) Castaway Dolce Vita Let Go (featuring Rea) Fall with Me (featuring David Byrne) Upcoming In Between North American Tour dates: Date Venue City, State June 14 930 Club Washington, DC June 15 Avalon Boston, MA June 16 Club Space Miami, FL July 20 Vanguard LA Los Angeles, CA July 21 Qwest Fields Events Center East Hall Seattle, WA August 17 Central Park NYC, NY August 18 Central Park NYC, NY September 27 Crystal Ballroom Portland, OR September 28 1015 San Francisco, CA September 29 Nocturnal Wonderland (Headlining) Los Angeles, CA October 27 The Park Denver, CO November 22 Karma (Ohio) Columbus, OH November 23 Metropolis (Montreal) Montreal, QC November 24 KOOLHAUS Toronto ON |

(Redmond, USA) - Earlier we noted that game producer EA (electronic arts) launched a record label, as many people purchasing their games have an interest in one of many exclusively licensed tracks. Apparently the market for game music is hot potato, as software behemoth Microsoft has launched a competition for producers, both bedroom and pro, offering a selection of twelve game trailers that should be enriched with new, original music. The competition ends on May 31st, and afterwards its up to the audience to vote for their favourites. Winners get a chance to record their composition in a Universal Music studio, and get an in-game spot, alongside other benefits. Fact is that the market for games is surpassing the market for movies. More and more are (dance) artists invited for a game soundtrack, a phenomenon that started when iD software invited Nine Inch Nails for their first Quake Game roughly a decade back. The movement is further strengthened by the fact that game consoles are turning into entertainment centers, with Microsoft making forays in the market for movie downloads, after venturing into music. The hunt for unknown talent aside, Redmond's Microsoft certainly knows how to score the works of some of the big guns. Roger Sanchez is revealing his exclusive XBOX 360 track this month, joining the likes of Scissor Sisters, Junkie XL among a host of others that have produced for the platform. In order to partake in the competition, go to the XBOX 360 webpage. There are twelve trailers available, namely: Halo Wars, Viva Pinata, Blue Dragon, Dead or Alive Xtreme 2, Fable 2,Tony Hawks Project 8, Pro Evolution Soccer 6, Forza 2, Tomb Raider, Too Human, Assassins Creed, Halo 3, pick the one you like and rock and roll! HIGH TECH SOUL is the first documentary to tackle the deep roots of techno music alongside the cultural history of Detroit, its birthplace. From the race riots of 1967 to the underground party scene of the late 1980s, Detroit's economic downturn didn't stop the invention of a new kind of music that brought international attention to its producers and their hometown. Featuring in-depth interviews with many of the world's best exponents of the artform, High Tech Soul focuses on the creators of the genre -- Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson -- and looks at the relationships and personal struggles behind the music. Artists like Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Eddie Fowlkes and a host of others explain why techno, with its abrasive tones and resonating basslines, could not have come from anywhere but Detroit. Daft Punk's Electroma is a film project by French duo Daft Punk. The plot revolves around the quest of two robots (the band members, played by Peter Hurteau and Michael Reich) in becoming human. The music featured in this film is not by Daft Punk. This is a first for the duo considering their previous film/DVD releases, Interstella 5555 and D.A.F.T. (the latter being a collection of music videos). The music in this film includes works by Todd Rundgren, Brian Eno, Sébastien Tellier, Curtis Mayfield, Linda Perhacs, Jackson C. Frank, and Mathieu Tonetti. Thomas Bangalter states, "With this film, we had the same approach as when we started making music. Create without any rules or standards. Take a free approach to something new that you don't really know, and that you learn from scratch." directed by Thomas Bangalter & Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo Saturday Midnight Screenings will start in PARIS on March 24th 2007 [ www.myspace.com ] |

Club Systems International and Plexi PR proudly present the Fifth Annual Club World Awards 2007 Nominees Announced Nightclub Industry Award Show Set For Wednesday, March 21 New York, NY – The Club World Awards will descend upon Miami this March, to again celebrate North American nightlife excellence. The fifth installment of the annual “Disco Globe” ceremony will take place on Wednesday, March 21st, 2007 at Privé, the Opium Group’s classically lavish lounge. The Scumfrog will return as host, and dance music’s shining stars will again be invited to present awards, and to mingle with the best nightclub operators in the country. Unlike other programs, The Club World Awards, sponsored by Club Systems International, is entirely dedicated to the business of nightlife. Nineteen categories in six fields honor every element of a nightclub or lounge, from its design, to its technicians, to its promotion. This year’s nominees reflect quality nightlife’s large geographical spread, with cities like D.C., Dallas, Denver, Jacksonville, Pittsburgh and Santa Barbara sharing the spotlight with always-dominant New York, Las Vegas, Miami and San Francisco. Cielo New York is set to defend its two-year “Best Club” title, while Tabu Las Vegas is going for four in “Best Lounge.” Pacha New York and Crobar New York take their club war to the globes, duking it out for the “Best Superclub” title, with Avalon Hollywood, Mansion Miami, Pure Las Vegas, and The Church Denver. This year’s “Best Sound System” could be in Paris Hilton’s namesake Jacksonville club, Rande Gerber’s opulent Cherry in Vegas, San Fran Prohibition-style lounge Slide, Pacha’s first North American location, big-city-style D.C. lounge Ultrabar, or the bed-filled Duvet New York. And where else could celebrity DJ AM go up against dance legend Francois K, Miami favorite son Oscar G, pretty boy Cedric Gervais and downtown hero Larry Tee for the title of “Best Resident DJ?” “No one does what we do,” says Club World Award producer and Club Systems International editor Kerri Mason. “Categories like ‘Best Sound System’ and ‘Best Resident DJ’ get to the heart of what nightclubs are really about: weekly, consistent, dogged dedication to creating the best possible experience for patrons.” Previous ceremonies drew presenters like Kelly Osbourne, Danny Tenaglia, Murk, Sandra Collins, Superchumbo, DJ Rap, and Misstress Barbara; and press kudos in Entertainment Weekly, Time Out New York, Las Vegas Weekly, and [ Forbes.com ] Club World Award nominees are selected from submissions by the staff of Club Systems International. The winners are determined by a panel of ten industry-veteran, expert judges, in all categories except one: the NightStalker Award, CWA’s own “people’s choice,” which is determined by public online voting. The Club World Awards is presented by Club Systems International, the only magazine devoted to the look, sound and feel of nightclubs. Launched in July 2000, the monthly publication covers the world’s best venues from technical and aesthetic perspectives. Club Systems International and DJ Times are published by Testa Communications. The Guardian Trina Murphy is calling on the kindness of Islanders to help bring some cheer to a sick seven-year-old boy. Murphy, a native Islander who now lives in Ottawa, has been touched by the plight of Shane Bernier — a young boy battling leukemia. Murphy learned of the boy’s troubling physical health and his wish to be inundated with birthday greetings on KISS FM, a radio station in the capital city. Shane, who lives in Lancaster, Ont., with his mother and his younger brother, Jacob, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at age five. After one month into treatment, the boy was in early remission, meaning there were no cancer cells in his blood. Shane’s family was buoyed by the promising news. On July 6, 2006, the news turned bad. Shane relapsed after completing 108 of the 130 weeks of planned treatment. The boy’s family and his doctors were shocked by the sudden setback. Shane may need to undergo a bone marrow transplant down the road, but thankfully his brother Jacob is a match. Presently, there is no sign of cancer in Shane’s system since relapsing. The blue-eyed youngster who has parted company with his blond locks has been in and out of the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa over the past couple of years. He has been kept in isolation at the hospital for two weeks and will be effectively cut off from the outside world for an undetermined period. He is hopeful, though, to have plenty of contact with friends, family and total strangers in the form of birthday cards. He wants the cards to cascade into his room, mounting into a massive pile. KISS FM has been urging listeners to help bring a smile to Shane, who turns eight on May 30, by sending birthday cards. Murphy decided to pick up the boy’s card cause as well. She has been firing off e-mails to friends and family members coaxing them to join in the card campaign. She then decided to get in touch with The Guardian in hopes of getting Shane’s story published to rally perhaps thousands of Islanders to head out to a card store. Shane has received close to 300 birthday cards with the big day still four months away. He has set his sight on a mere million, said his mom, Natalie Bernier. Birthday cards can be sent to: Shane c/o KISS FM, 2001 Thurston Dr., Ottawa, ON, K1G6C9. [ www.theguardian.pe.ca ] |
