The Manual (How to Have a Number One the Easy Way) is a 1988 book by The Timelords (Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty), better known as The KLF. It is a tongue-in-cheek step by step guide to achieving a No.1 single with no money or musical skills, and a case study of the duo's UK novelty pop No. 1 "Doctorin' the Tardis".

A cultural event organized by Tadamon! Montreal and the Kalmunity Vibe Collective, the third in a series under the banner Artists Against Apartheid, uniting Montreal artists in support of the growing international movement to boycott Israeli apartheid. This evening will draw parallels between the struggle for freedom and against apartheid in South Africa and the contemporary struggle against Israeli apartheid today in Palestine. Artists Against Apartheid III: Brides from South Africa to Palestine takes place within a context of commemorative events to mark the 60th year of the Palestinian Nakba ('catastrophe'). 60 years of dispossession, ethnic cleansing and exile for Palestinians resulting from the creation of the state of Israel...

performances from:

* Kalmunity Word Sound System with DJ Andy Williams featuring:

Jason "Blackbird" Selman (poet, trumpet)
Fabrice Koffy (lyricist)
Joel "Jahnice" Janis (vocalist)
Katalyst (lyricist)
Zibz Black Current (lyricist)
Karl Pricot (percussion)
Mohamed Mehdi (guitar, voice)
Empress Deeqa (voice)

* members of Nomadic Massive featuring:

Lou Piensa (lyricist)
Waahli aka Wyzah (lyricist)
Butta Beats (lyricist / beat-box)

information on performers:

* Nomadic Massive is a Montreal based collective of independent Hip-Hop artists who have come together in an effort to combine their energies and spread their music across borders. The crew is made up of independent artists who share a similar vision of music and life as well as a desire to travel and experience the cultures of the world through their art. Although this collective is new, its members have been working in the music community for many years as artists but also as radio show host, organizers, educators, street-workers, producers and other community oriented roles. WHY Nomadic Massive? Because they are cultural nomads, all uprooted since birth and latching on to Hip-Hop to express this disruption. The crew reps a cultural diversity reflective of the city they evolve in. Musical nomads also, representing an open-minded Hip-Hop which finds its inspiration in the tradition of the past, combining samplers, turntables and traditional instruments. Well aware of the contradictions of Hip-Hop.s globalization process, the massive feels it is vital to be in touch with other scenes across the world, especially those in less developed economies, to share, learn, be inspired and spread a message of love, peace and universal understanding. [ www.nomadicmassive.ca ]

* Kalmunity Vibe Collective has caught the minds and consciousness of people throughout this city, as the cultural network Kalmunity Vibe Collective presents a groundbreaking cultural space celebrating social justice and innovative musicality. As A collective of local artists dedicated to promoting and perpetuating the potential of art as a tool for communication and activism for social, political and environmental consciousness. Their uplifting 'live organic improv' every week is at Montreal's Sablo Café. [ www.kalmunity.com ]

This event is hosted by Tadamon! Montreal, whose work is directed at building solidarity between movements for social and economic justice in Montreal and the Middle East. In Canada, Tadamon works to support the boycott, sanctions & divestment of Israeli apartheid & to challenge the listing of Hezbollah as a terrorist organization by the Canadian government.

Black club owners claim police harassment
by Stefan Christoff

[ hour.ca ]

As much as peacefully coexistent multiculturalism is the declared objective in Canada's major city centres, the reality of fractured race relations hasn't evaporated, especially, as some allege, with regards to certain practices of the Montreal police.

A court battle surrounding Vision, a black-owned café/night club in LaSalle, is currently taking place with a court decision expected in coming weeks on the future of the club's operating license. Vision is a popular nightspot for a wide spectrum of musical and community events, a performance space for multiple local and international artists, from Caribbean reggae artists to local hip-hop talent.

Police relations is a major issue surrounding Vision - in recent months several Caribbean community radio programs, broadcasting at CKUT Radio, have held on-air discussions concerning the issue of racial profiling by the Montreal police at Vision.

"Vision is treated differently than other clubs by the police, who approach Vision as if we are all guilty due to our race," says Mark Anthony Bentley, co-director of the venue. "The police have stopped people randomly outside of the club in the parking lot, when walking across the street, issuing countless jaywalking tickets in cases of clear racial harassment."

Community workers argue increased government funding for gang prevention programs has resulted in an increasingly radicalized police strategy.

"Until now there has never been a violence problem inside Vision; even the police have stated this
in court," continues Bentley. "The police openly state that gang members frequent the bar, however in presenting their claims in court the police presented a list, citing less than 1 per cent of our clientèle as having any connection to gang activities. Essentially the police claim that gangs are connected to our club only due to the fact that we are a black-owner business, which makes them uncomfortable."

The management at Vision plan to take their complaints to the Quebec Human Rights Commission in upcoming months in an effort to halt what they believe to be racial profiling.

:: WHAT TO BRING ::

Water
10 L per person, per day. This number accounts for drinking and other uses. Take extra water in your ride just in
case. It's also a good idea to bring re-fillable water containers (larger, smaller, etc), buckets (for dishes, etc) and
your own dish and cutlery. Buy big jugs, not lots of stupid plastic bottles!

Food
Proper nutrition is key to getting the most out of your party, and the rest of your life for that matter.
It can be cheap and easy to eat right, and enjoy your food at a festival, especially when you combine your forces with your friends.

A good approach is to assume you'll be taking care of yourself regardless of other people's camps or kitchens.
If you plan on eating food at other people's camps, it would be mighty nice if you would think of bringing a bunch of food to contribute - if everybody did this a little, we'd be pretty set.

Divell has been talking about his plans for a big veggie soup kitchen that will operate on a food donation basis,
so grab some fresh goods from a farmer's stand or market on the way up to contribute.

And bring a huge bag of trail mix!

Other Shit

Every vehicle coming to the festival should try to have a fire extinguisher, a 5 gallon bucket of water,
and a shovel. This is for fire safety and it's a very good idea. some other good items would be fix-a-flat,
a spare tire, a jack, and jumper cables.

Essentials

Personal Items
+ Clothing clothing for hot, cold, wet, dry weather
+ sun visor/hat
+ towel (you may not care about swimming or bathing, but just wait 'til you get stuck in a downpour!)
+ Healthcare sunscreen - at least SPF 15
+ bug repellent (citronella/lemon/eucalyptus is nicer than deet... or just eat garlic and avoid bananas)
+ toothpaste, travel brush and floss
+ toilet paper (one-ply and as green as possible preferrably) and lyme for the latrines
+ condoms, properly stored! (somewhere as cool and dry as possible... those "do not eat" dessicant packs can help dehumidify whatever container they are in, such as tupperware)
+ natural disinfectant
+ personal medications (allergies, illnesses, hallucinations (either to prevent or to induce, I can't remember which)
o flashlight
o something to eat out of (mug, tupperware, extra shoe) and a spoon/fork/spork
+ Camp Items garbage bags
+ shovel or pickaxe
+ duct tape
+ first aid
+ Shelter - a tent, if you don't feel like being creative and building a teepee
+ knife or multi-tools
o cans for ash trays if you smoke (you should bring a small, portable container such as a film cannister to keep on your person to keep butts off the ground. not only are cigarette butts very definitely REAL litter, they are among one of the worst kinds! it's damn hard to pick 'em all back up, so keep them off the floor in the first place!!)
o batteries

Accessories
+ Arts/Science/educational accoutrements
+ musical instruments
+ adapters & cords for musical/electronic equipment
+ art supplies pencils, pens and paper
+ clothing/material to be stenciled
+ Other items tables, or table top surfaces(plywood) the more tables or stable surfaces the better. bring em down!
+ stuff for bartering
+ fm radios
+ walkie-talkies
+ bike pumps
+ picks, shovels, hoes rakes - for digging shitters, compost pits and if needed, firefighting.
+ lights, (x-mas, rope, solar-powered lawn lights, lamps) if we got enough xmas lights & extension chords, we could light all the pathways of the festival. this would be especially great for the paths to the shitters!

It Was Just A Massage, & Some Meth Pastor Now Says

(Colorado Springs, Colorado) A day after making emphatic denials of allegations by a former hustler, Rev. Ted Haggard now admits to getting a massage from the man, to buying methamphetamine.

But, Haggard continues to proclaim he never engaged in sex with Mike Jones.

Jones claims he had a three-year "pay for sex" relationship with the prominent pastor

After a radio station played voice messages Friday morning left on Jones' telephone by a man purported to be Haggard, the pastor called a news conference.

As well as saying he never had sex with Jones he also claimed that he but the meth but never used it.

"I was tempted, but I never used it." Haggard told reporters he bought the meth because he was curious -- but that he then threw it away.

The evangelical community nationwide was rocked by Jones' charges. In addition to leading the 14,000-member New Life Church Haggard was president of the multimillion- member National Association of Evangelicals.

He "temporarily" stepped down from his ministry Thursday as a church investigation got underway, and announced his resignation from the national association. (story)

Haggard was considered a major player in the evangelical movement and participated in weekly conference calls with the White House where policy, including two failed attempts to pass a federal marriage amendment, was discussed.

In Colorado he threw his weight, and that of his church, behind the effort to amend the state constitution to ban gay marriage. He also was an opponent of a measure that would allow civil unions in the state.

The allegations against Haggard come only days before voters go to the polls to consider both measures.

Jones first made the revelation to television station KUSA and then repeated them on a Denver radio talk show Thursday. (story) He also provided the station with two of the voicemails relating to drug use.

"Hi Mike, this is Art. Hey, I was just calling to see if we could get any more. Either $100 or $200 supply," said one voicemail, according to the station.

In a second message, left a few hours later, the station quoted the caller saying: "Hi Mike, this is Art, I am here in Denver and sorry that I missed you. But as I said, if you want to go ahead and get the stuff, then that would be great. And I'll get it sometime next week or the week after or whenever."

A lie detector test taken Friday morning by Jones was "inconclusive".

The test was administered live on a KHOW morning show after Jones agreed Thursday to take it.

The man who administrated the test, John Kresnik, said it indicated "deceptions" in Jones' answers, but added that was likely due to the recent stress on Jones and his "inability to eat or sleep".

Thursday night the pastor who has stepped in to replace Haggard while he is being investigated by the church sent an email to parishioners saying that Haggard had admitted to some of Jones' accusations. (story)

Haggart's work in promoting Colorado's proposed amendment to ban same-sex marriage was in conjunction with Focus on the Family, also based in Colorado Springs, and which operates a so-called ex-gay ministry.

Friday afternoon FOF chair James Dobson issued a statement saying he was "heartsick" over the Haggart affair.

"All of us at Focus on the Family are heartsick over the allegation, not yet confirmed, that Ted has had a private life with a homosexual for several years. We will await the outcome of this story, but the possibility that an illicit relationship has occurred is alarming to us and to millions of others," said Dobson's statement.

"Ted has been my close friend and colleague for many years. He has been used mightily to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Colorado Springs and around the world. He will continue to be my friend, even if the worst allegations prove accurate. Nevertheless, sexual sin, whether homosexual or heterosexual, has serious consequences and we are extremely concerned for Ted, his family and his church."

through collaboration and cross-pollination. WOW was founded in early
2005 by DJs Jasmine, Cyan and Rue and since then has expanded to
include a regular roster of local talent behind the decks.
Current residents include DJs Tashish, Dirty Dan and Ruby Jane. Since
May 2005 they have hosted regular monthly events featuring local djs
spanning genres from DnB & jungle to electro and techno to hip hop,
grime, dancehall, funk and house. WOW has also featured djs from
Toronto and Vancouver, live PAs, as well as circus and breakdance
