» Endo replied on Sun Feb 17, 2008 @ 2:04pm. Posted in Harmonic Mixing.
endo
Coolness: 48015

Harmonic Mixing is the future of DJing. A lot more DJ’s are mixing harmonically these days including Dubfire, Pete Tong, Paul Van Dyke, Tiesto, Sasha, John Digweed, and many more of the worlds top DJ’s. A skilled DJ has the ability to accurately guess which songs will be in key with one another since they know their records so well, but now there is a system that will take the guessing out of your mixing. There is the traditionally method of Harmonic Mixing which a lot of people are familiar with, but my system goes beyond the traditional system of harmonic mixing and will guarantee your tracks will be in key, no matter what PITCH each turntable is on!

What Is Harmonic Mixing?

A Harmonic mix is when two songs in the same key, or complimenting keys are mixed together to give the mix a musical effect that the songs are “singing together”

The best way to find the key of your record is to play each song on the piano and figure out which scale fits the song best (e.x. Am). The easiest way to do this is find what you think is the root note of the song is, then play a major and minor scale and see which one fits best. The piano method is the most accurate way of figuring out the key. However, there is also a program that will analyze the key of the song for you called MIXED IN KEY [ www.mixedinkey.com ] Not only does mixed in key tell you what key the track is in, but it will also write the key into the tracks ID3 information so it will show up in Programs such as Traktor DJ Studio in the key column, or it will even write the key before the track or artist name. This allows you to sort your playlists by key.

If you know the key of your record, you can assign them a keycode in the Camelot Easy mix chart (Shown Above). The Camelot’s Easy Mix Chart is a replica of the “circle of fifths” (F, C, G, D, A, E, F etc). Using the Camelots Easy mix chart is like going around a clock. You can mix a record with another record in the same key (keycode), or a record that is either to the left, right, above or below that keycode in the Camelot chart, like going around a clock.

Different mixes have different effects on the energy of the room. For example, mixing a fifth up (1A to 2A) will raise the energy of the room. Mixing a 5th down (2A to 1A) will make the mix sing together but it will take the energy “deeper”. In musical terms, a record will mix with another record that is in the same key, its subdominant key, relative minor or major key, or a fifth up. You may also wait for a percussive section of the song and mix in a record that is in a key a half step up, or the next note up in the chromatic scale. This will create the feeling of a Modulation, and the new key will provide a sense of renewed energy because it is using a new set of notes.

Using Camelot Sound’s “Easy Mix” chart will help take the guessing out of your record selection and allow you to make harmonic mixes quickly, and on the fly.

Why Is Harmonic Mixing Inaccurate?

The major problem with using the traditional harmonic mixing method is that to mix records and beatmatch, you must alter the tempo of one record to match the tempo of the other. Changing the tempo of a record will change the pitch, and will also change the KEY of each record. If the tempo is increased or decreased by 6%, the record will be in a new key that is a semitone, or half step higher.

Lets say for example you are playing two records that are both in the same key (A minor). They should mix together harmonically no matter what right? Wrong! If there is a 6% difference in pitch (one turntable on -1% and the other on +5%), they will both be in a different key a half step apart and your mix will most likely sound terrible!

There is a workaround for this and it is called KEY LOCK. Key lock will lock the key of your record no matter what the tempo of your track is, and will make the traditional system of harmonic mixing accurate, EXCEPT, when you slow a record down on key lock, most of the time the sound quality is degraded and sounds “digital” and you can hear what are called “artifacts” in the sound. If you are using Key Lock in a digital DJ program this can also be very CPU heavy.

I have created a new system of Harmonic Mixing!

My solution to this problem is called ENDO KEY.

The ENDO KEY is the NEW KEY of a record at a SET TEMPO (BPM). It does NOT matter what tempo you use as your RELATIVE TEMPO as long as every track is calculated at this BPM value. I use 140 BPM. Keep in mind, I put my drum and bass at 140 BPM, my breaks at 140 BPM, and my downtempo at 140 BPM. This is just a reference tempo. No matter what BPM I Choose, the effect will always be the same!

To EFFECTIVELY mix harmonically without key lock, you need to mix a record with another record in a complimenting ENDO KEY.

Once I figure out the Key of all my records at 140 BPM (or whatever relative tempo you choose), I then assign the new key at 140 BPM a keycode in the Camelot Easy Mix Chart (shown above).

There is an easy way to figure out the key of your records at the relative BPM inside Traktor 3 (Traktor DJ Studio). In the Traktor preferences there is an option to display the key inside the decks. Traktor will actually tell you if your playing the song in the original key, or a new key. To activate this, you go into your preferences, appearance, file info options, and choose to show the key. Now if your turntable is at +6% the “key” field in the decks will say +1, which means you are a half step up.

This may sound like a lot of work, but hard work pays off and you can HEAR the difference. I have done this for almost 4000 of my tracks, and now I never have to think about pitch difference when I’m harmonic mixing. All I have to do is count from 1 to 12 and I can strategically plan my DJ sets this way. It is the science behind party rocking!

Sunday September 16th, Sanctuary Brings you one of the top Techno DJ's in the world, and Regional DMC Champion Michael Wenz![

Sanctuary is Burlington, Vermont's premiere bi-weekly party dedicated to underground dance music. Based in the heart of the Green Mountains at Club Metronome, our goal is to showcase cutting edge house, techno, breaks, electro and drum & bass acts to the small but receptive community of dance music enthusiasts in our area.

The crew that hosts Sanctuary is a collective of New England based DJs from different musical backgrounds. Currently the collective consists of DJs: Adrenalin (Techno), Endo (Breaks), Haitian (Psytrance), Sekhmet (Drum & Bass), Tricky Pat (Drum & Bass) and Will Taylor (House).

Sanctuary // Where Electronica Lives

Here's some info about your DJ's for the night:

MICHAEL WENZ
( Drop Bass Network / Drumasheenz // WI )

Michaels ears, eyes and mind are always open. His musical diversity and willingness to experiment elevates his listeners to an unparallel frenzy. Regardless of circumstances, Michael can always be expected to play an awesome set that ignites the vibe of the party. In each set you can always feel the energy hit high peaks as he builds up the music The dance music that he plays has been assigned many labels, many have attempted to pigeonhole his work. However Michaels music cannot be so easily classified. It is best described as hard trace without being predictable, breakbeat without being cheezy, and acid techno without being minimal or boring. Simply put slammin electronic dance music. He is one of the most inspiring and insanely talented DJs. His success can be surely attributed to his unique talent, dedication and passion for music as well as his outgoing personality. Be on the look out for his peak time madness!!!!

DJ MAYHEM
( Banged Out Entertainment // CT )
(Techno, Turntablism)

Geoff Rybak aka DJ Mayhem started his trek into the acid techno sound circa 1995 after being exposed to the electronic dance music culture by his best friend and labelmate Dementia 909. After hearing the infectious beats created by producers such as D.A.V.E. The Drummer, Chris Liberator, Rowland The Bastard and others on the Stay Up Forever collective, he decided to finally show his love for the music and made the jump into showcasing this sound. Dark, heavy, Rowland TB-303 acid laden psychedelic melodies are to be heard and felt throughout his intense sets. Mayhem has several mixed CD projects on the horizon under the Teknologikal Warfare name and has 2 volumes of intense acid techno flava that make you seem like you're in the Acid City itself London, England.

There are still an extra couple of goodies that we want to bring out for this event, so keep your eye on the listing for a couple of nice additions as time goes on. We'll have flyers and tickets out in time for Hard As Fuck: Ground Zero. (Printed flyers by Aug 4th).

The primary feature of this night is the 18-hole pure UV reactive artistic miniputt course that takes up half the space in the building. Every light beam in this building is a UV beam. The tables, the air hockey, the golf balls... Everything is UV reactive. With entry, you will get to play as much miniputt as you want, in teams/groups, individually, in competition, or in fun.

In the last 12 months alone, now going under the alias of Orbit1, Sam has worked with with such producers as Alistair Storm, In Effect, Dj Fracus, Nu Foundation, Inverse and Impact with releases and remixes various labels and compilation albums such as Dusk Til Dawn, Warped Science, Thin N Crispy, Hardcore Underground, and Hardcore Heaven 4.

In 2007, Sam is now launching his DJ career by jumping right into the deep end, headlining events over the UK and across North America, determined to infect his unique sounds and approach to hardcore ravers far and wide.

VH3 is hands down the absolute #1 best trance DJ this city has ever had the pleasure of having come play for us. For a full biography on this man, check his website: [ www.vh3.info ] and be sure to download his mixes while you're there.

:: DJ Legacy :: (Underdog Entertainment)
Morning Set (bigbeat/breaks/house)
This man used to be a resident DJ alongside with Jamie C at L'after for years. He is most recently known for his stellar extended performance at Techno Church 2, doing what many have considered to be the best closing set ever heard at a rave.

:: SeismoLogick :: Imported from Montreal (Undergrinding) tag set with :: Rob Black :: (Underdog Entertainment)
(Electrobass - Breakbeats)

After 10 years of electronic rythms as a listener and as a freak/addict dancer, SeismoLogick was touched by the sound of the Breaksbeat. In 2005 she took her passion up to the next level by starting to mix vinyl. Since then, she's been living and breathing music. She’s down with atmospheric melodies who takes you to the next levels. SeismoLogick like her breaks served WELL DONE, with kicking electric and STRONG BASELINE by moment and with some funky, d&b, electro or acid flavors. Beats with soul and structure!!!

SeismoLogick is derived from these two worlds : Seismic and Logic. Seismic, illustrate the vibrant feeling that a good bass make you feel, the energy coming from it and sake you from the inside. Logick to refer to all the technical aspect of the music (structure and composition) as well as the complexity of the art of djing. Seismologik is surrounded and supported by lots of Montreal DJs/producers, and is an active member of the electronic music scene.

These two met this year down in Miami, Florida during the Winter Music Conference, regarded as one of the largest annual breaks parties, pulling in over 50 000 people a night with the largest rosters imaginable.

Rob Black is the man who is putting this night together. He's been DJing out at local high profile events since "Village of the Damned" in 2004. He has just recently begun releasing productions independently under his moniker "RBK", and as a special treat the first track played at Brainfreeze will be an original anthem. Trends of his music while djing include: acid effects, high-pass filters, cut-up vocals, dirty basslines, occasionally mixing on three turntables and small amounts of turntablism.

:: MC Nickoblee! ::
Get ready for some of the quickest rhymes and best routines in the business, MC Nickoblee promises his most dramatic performance yet for Brainfreeze.

Additionally, we will be having some artists displaying their talents.

Shure | Matix | Breakdown | Los Angeles, CA

When Reid Speed began spinning records in 1996, she first generated curiosity as one of few female DJs at the time. However, she quickly earned respect for her talent in the highly competitive NYC scene. By the summer of 1997 she was working with rave promoters, Stuck on Earth Promotions and the following year as a member of the Direct Drive crew. At these events she cut her teeth playing alongside the top names in the genre.

1998 found Reid working at DJ Dara's Breakbeat Science, the first record store in the United States to specialize in drum & bass records. Capitalizing on their large and widespread customer base, her demos soon spread, which led to touring in the United States, Puerto Rico, Ireland, Canada, and Mexico. A 1998 visit to England sparked an interest in UK garage which inspired her to promote her own events.

The 2001 release of her debut mix CD, Resonance, yielded the singles "Mr Fix It" with Ming & FS, and "Picture This" with DJ Seen. In support of the release, a 40-date tour sponsored by Mixer magazine introduced her sound to an even wider audience. 2005 saw collaborations with MC Dino and DJ Swamp on a full length album. In March 2006, her remix of Disorder's "Deadline" was released on Acumen Records.

In 2003 Reid was chosen to play her blend of drum & bass on Jamie Kennedy's show, The Jamie Kennedy Experiment on the WB Television Network. She also appeared in an episode of Spike TV's MDN. In 2005, she was chosen to judge BPM Magazine & Rockstar energy drink's "Beauty & the Beats" contest with DJ Rap and Colette. A subsequent tour garnered much attention, including an appearance on Bravo's "Blowout".

She is now based in Los Angeles, California, where she manages Break Down, an event showcasing UK garage and Nu skool breaks.

Klute is really great. He's been making music one way or another for quite a long time now and some people think he's got quite good at it. At one point in time enough people thought him good enough that he decided to quit his job and become a fulltime Klute. He is now d&b's leading fulltime Klute. That was after he was in a Hardcore Punk band when he was a kid - in the 80's, called THE STUPIDS. They were really good at first too, but then got boring and fell apart, not after some juicy ego clashes. Anyway, Klute - Tom Withers, started back in 1994, i think when he was asked for a name to keep exclusive to Certificate 18 records when they agreed on 2 tracks to be his first single. It was there he stayed until 2000 when he delivered his 2nd final album for Cert 18 called FEAR OF PEOPLE. At this point in time Tom decided to make a change and realising no one else was interested in releasing his music decided to set up his own label COMMERCIAL SUICIDE. With his own platform set up he realized anything was possible, he could even release music by other idiots. Which he did. Perhaps too much. An interesting fact no one knows about Tom Klute is that he is the world's leading composer of Airport music. Most of you who've travelled the friendly skys will have unknowingly heard his works at one time or another. Now we come to 2007 and Klute is ready for fucking more, and more it is with his 5th album "The Emperor's New Clothes". Check it out

( Freak / Tech Freak / Metalheadz / Outbreak // USA )

Robyn Chaos was invited to the legendary Metalheadz Blue Note Sessions back in 1995 in Shoreditch London while on a year off after high school. All it took was one night listening to Doc Scott, Photek, Goldie and Peshay; and having never even heard of drum and bass back in her home of suburbia New Jersey; she was instantly a smitten kitten and the love affair is still coursing strong through her veins over 10 years later!! She immediately enrolled herself in production courses, ultimately did a degree in Music in London, and coming from a live band/rock/blues background, transferred the knowledge and talent she had into the medium of dance music. Influenced heavily from anyone from Billie Holiday, to Stevie Nicks, to NIN to Portishead, also gave her the advantage a limitless black hole of inspiration to draw from, which is apparent on her releases, such as the infamous Faith in Chaos "Possession", "Requiem", "Lust", "Salvation" (released on Metalheadz) and more recently, the Freak 12", "The Suffering/Rapture" alongside Bkey, Audio and Dylan. Founder and Managing Director of the dark enthuasiasts DJ agency, Anger Management, (tending to the diaries of artists such as Dylan, Technical Itch, Raiden, The Panacea, Limewax, and more!), which has recently branched Worldwide to include tours in the USA and Oz/Nz; She also co-organises the freshest, grimiest drum and bass events on the Planet, "Therapy Session's", which started three years ago as monthly in London, and has now infested such cities around the globe as Vienna, Bristol, Manchester, Bournemouth, Rotterdam, Riga, St Petersburg, Tallinn, Milwaukee, Valencia, St Louis, Oporto, Miami, Philadelphia, and Budapest with more on the way! Robyn Chaos DJ's regularly all over the World, and still manages to find time to write music and work on her upcoming EP on Freak Recordings! This year has been seen Mrs. Chaos tear Worldwide, like a tornado in ruby heels, playing all over Eastern Europe, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Holland, UK, Belgium, The US, Hawaii, Australian/New Zealand, Exit Festival, WMC and everywhere in between!! You know what they say, "ain't no fury like a woman with dark dubs"!!

“HALLUCINATION ON FILM” - WORLD TOUR 2007

“MONK” of “Rabbit In The Moon”
Rabbit in the Moon | [ www.hallucination.com ] | Miami, FL

From small dark clubs to massive outdoor festivals, always turning it out - it is here where you, the subterranean public may encounter The Monk.... the Mack-Of-All-Trades, dj/producer/artist and overall hustler of culture. Banging out a soundtrack of underground party music that jumps from hard house and breaks to slamming disco-tech, and twisted techno, to drum and bass rinse-outs, the dreadlocked Monk punishes the cross-fader as he works one record against another in a style that owes more to hip hop than to conventional club DJ'ing.

As one of the Founders of Rabbit in the Moon, Pimp Juice and Hallucination Records, Monk is a corner stone of the Southeastern U.S. Scene and has established himself as a devoted player in the Electronic Music Industry worldwide. Monk is best known for his early work and collaboration with Confucius in the collective "Rabbit in the Moon" and as the opening dj to the RITM live show for over a decade ('92-2002). Together, Confucius and the Monk have remixed several multi-platinum artists including Sarah McLachlan, The Smashing Pumpkins, Garbage, and White Zombie, while their original tracks have graced the dj mix cds of international superstars like Sasha & John Digweed.

Monk is now breaking new ground with several innovative audio-visual projects, establishing a new solo career apart from R.I.T.M., and running Hallucination Recordings full time. Monk, with partner "The Track Mack", still keeps busy remixing world renowned artists like Sting, Limp Bizkit, and Britney Spears. Constantly in demand, his remixes are taking the Billboard Dance / Club Play charts by storm, and charting in BILLBOARDS' TOP TEN with Cooler Kids "Punk Debutante", Boomkat's "The Wreckoning", T.A.T.U.'s "All The Things She Said" and Petey Pablo's "Freek-A-Leek". Most recently, Monk's mix for Seal's "Crazy 2005" has peaked at #1 on the BILLBOARD dance/club play charts, while his remix of Britney Spears' "Do Something" has been included on her international single release. Monk's remix expertise is constantly in demand with industry professionals and artists.

One of the most versatile djs around, Monk is known for his unique dj sets ranging from his traditional hardbangin' house -vs- funky breaks style with a touch of drum & bass & hip hop, to a deeper "Dark Side Of The Monk" set that leans toward a darker tech-house meets tribal & disco house style. If Monk can't make yo' booty move, yo' booty must be dead. Headlining shows across the nation from nightclubs to giant festival massives, monk has earned his outstanding reputation has been voted in BPM magazine as receiving the "most fan email nominations" in the country and one of Americas Favorite DJs - March 2003. Monk has most certainly forged his place in the underground dance community. A forefather of the Hallucination-Generation, originator, innovator, guaranteed to rock tha party, Monk continues to freak the funk week in & week out. One Nation, Underground, Invisible. Halluci-nation…

*Look out for a brand new DJ MONK mix cd and original 12" tracks in the not to distant future. Check out the custom live visual mayhem by Hallucination On Film at all Monk shows, and on special occasions see his dancer "Skandalous" and M.C. "Cles One" rock the party with him side by side.

With his recent releases on high profile record labels such as Broke, BreaksFM and Electrofly, his Audio Tactics Recordings imprint and a hectic touring schedule, Wavewhore is quickly building a reputation as one to watch in the global break beat community.  His skills behind the decks have also led him to host ‘The Audio Tactics Sessions’ on the award-winning [ www.breaksfm.com ] where he can be heard every other Monday evening from 8-10pm EST.  In addition, he has appeared as a guest on Liquid Todd’s ‘Altered State’ radio show on WKTU 103.5 FM New York City and Annie Nightingale’s infamous radio show on BBC Radio 1 London.  As a DJ, Wavewhore has consistently held the top breaks residency in his home base of New York City and has shared the stage with almost every major international breakbeat artist. His high-intensity DJ sets blend many styles of breaks from funk to tear-out to tech into powerful and effective mixes that whip dancefloor crowds into a frenzy.
Wavewhore’s cutting edge music has also received high level support from many of the top names in the business including Aquasky, Freestylers, General Midi, DJ Icey, The Autobots, Annie Nightingale, Jay Cunning, Chris Carter, Soul of Man, Elite Force, Ctrl Z, Klaus Hill, Sunz of Mecha and many more.

Wavewhore began his musical career playing heavy metal guitar and toured the New York City area in the early 90's. During that time, he was also experimenting with electronic music and in 1992, Well Primed Records released his first electronic dance music composition titled "Voodoo".

In 2004, Wavewhore signed with Electrofly Records and "Breakin' The Law" was released on vinyl in May 2005. His mammoth "Funk Pill" single, which features vocals from Bex Riley, was released on Broke Recordings in 2005 and has been repressed on vinyl four times.  “Funk Pill” was also licensed to Finger Lickin’ Records for the “Export 01” compilation mixed by the Drumattic Twins.  In October 2006, Broke released Wavewhore’s most recent funk-fuelled single titled “This Is How It Should Be Done” and in the same month his heavy remix of Rektchordz’s “Bass Pressure” was also released on the BreaksFM imprint.  The “Bass Pressure” remix has become an anthem in the massive breakbeat raves in Spain.

Forthcoming releases include a remix of D-Ranged’s “Assembled” which is scheduled to appear on BombTraxx in March 2007, as well as a single for the Mechanoise imprint’s “Wreckin’ Crew” series.  Wavewhore’s name is derived from his addiction to manipulating audio waveforms and from all appearances he promises to be an inspiring force in electronic dance music.

January 28th, 2006 Blessed Breaks is proud to present DEVINE & EMILY PLAY LIVE with Special Guest DJ Linz!!

Emily Play & Devine
( The Second Movement, [ Dropshop.com ] Breaks Collective | Miami, FL )

Biography ::

This innovative live act is unexpectedly beating the odds of today's
overcrowded electronic music scene. By using the digital music
revolution to their advantage, in two short years they have amassed a
hugely diverse, intensely devoted global fanbase. However, their
overnight rise from obscurity is not what's making the biggest
headlines, it's their high energy, live shows. You'll never hear the
same set twice from this constantly evolving act, yet every live show
consistently delivers the same signature hooks, big builds, fat bass
lines and emilyPLAY>'s huge, vocal performance.

MELEE: (satellite records, [ bostonbreaks.com ] avalon boston)
Jay Giacoppo, or Coppo to his numerous friends, is an incredibly humble, yet extremely beloved figure in Boston's burgeoning dance scene. He's known to most for his ever present smile, yet underneath the always positive exterior is one of the hardest working, and extremely talented people in town.

Despite being a tad shy of 28, Coppo, or Melee (when he DJs,) is already an established night club promoter, record store manager and street team coordinator. By day, he works as the General Manager at Boston's most prestigious specialty dance shop, Satellite Records. By night, he serves as the breakbreat resident at Avalon, a universally lauded super club that repeatedly has earned "Best in America" honors from respected publications such as URB Magazine and BPM Culture.

As a promoter, he's worked with Shadows of Society crew to bring top-flight talent to town, including Elite Force, Rennie Pilgrem and Paranoid Jack. His promotional efforts also led him to take over the legendary Wednesday night at the Phoenix Landing, a night that has served as the centerpiece for the city's dance scene for the last seven years. His party, run through the Boston Breaks collective, a group he founded and runs, is called Tension. Already a few months old, the night has generated an exceptional buzz, helping breath life into a sound that hasn't been embraced by the mainstream dance culture.

His hard work and perseverance is paying dividends. In the last year alone, he's had a number of high profile gigs, most notably WMC05, Burning Man, and The World Quarter-Pipe Snowboarding Championships. He's also had the incredible opportunity to play alongside a number of the genre's most celebrated talents, i.e. DJ Hyper, Infusion, James Zabiela, Smithmonger, Chris Carter, Icey, Simply Jeff, and more.

Always on the move, Giacoppo shows promise to be Boston's next breakout star. His night continues to build momentum and the booking offers have increased with each passing month. But in spite of all the good things happening, he remains completely grounded and dedicated to his local scene.

SCOOBY [ www.MassiveAudio.net ] / Albany, NY)
The sound of breakbeat found Scooby Carolan in 1997 in upstate New York. Instantly captivated by the syncopated beats, quick changes, and complex musical structure of Acid & Funky Breaks, he began DJing immediately. After a quick series of mixed tapes called the “Resurrection Series” he bought his first drum machine and was throwing his own parties by 1997.

Now in 2005, 8 years later, Scooby Carolan is a co-owner of Massive Audio. A close knit collective of DJs, producers, and promoters centered around a record store of the same name in Albany, NY. He has played all over the USA and released several mixes over the Internet that have received great reviews. Check out [ massiveaudio.net ] to find out more.
