Syrup Girls [ ] NYC) [ www.myspace.com ] Sasha Frere-Jones of The New Yorker called Syrup Girls "New York nightlife's best-kept secret" and Flavorpill said they "played one of the best ever sets as Misshapes." It's true. They are pretty damn fun. The pair of Star Eyes and Siren met in San Francisco in 1997, when they were DJing rough and rugged drum & bass at raves around the country every weekend. At first, they thought each other were stuck-up princesses but they soon realized that they couldn't live without each other. Fast forward to 2000, when they got totally into the UK two-step sound and started Syrup Girls to bring the fun back to overly serious DJ gigs. The project took off like woah and soon they were playing for the likes of Miss Sixty, Flaunt Magazine, Diesel, Adidas and OM Records, and opening up for acts like The Streets, Dizzee Rascal, The Rapture, Social Distortion and The Goo Goo Dolls (of all people). Syrup Girls have released three CDs: their self-titled debut in 2000; 2003's Pop A Boner; and this year's Shotgun Wedding Vol. 4 (on Tigerbeat 6 affiliate Violent Turd), a split mix CD with Drop The Lime. They've also been featured in Trace, Urb, Rinse, Seventeen, and the Village Voice and they are residents at Dirty Down (Lit, NYC) and Mad Suspect (Savalas, NYC), as well as forthcoming Syrup nights at Siren's bar, Home Sweet Home. And yes they still play drum & bass so don't ask them about it every time you see them. Jas Nasty vs Dirty Dan (womenonwax, MTL) [ www.myspace.com ] [ www.traktion.com ] DJ Jasmine finds it troublesome to describe exactly what she plays as a DJ due to her ridiculously varied musical tastes and collection. Her style is definitely on the old school funky tip, and her love affair with heavy bass is hard to miss. But what does she actually play? Jasmine's sets are an ambitious mix of breaks/ various styles of breakbeat, dub/roots reggae, dancehall, jungle, hip-hop, grime, and dubstep. Secretly wishing the world was one big booty party, Jasmine also plays hip-house, dance party rap, ghetto tech, booty house, as well as some acid and funky/ disco-influenced early 90's house. Just to warn you, she has also been known to play Indian bhangra, latino/ cubano son, reggaeton, disco, African funk, random 80's music, rockabilly and rock'n'roll. Although originally inspired by artists such as Aphex Twin or DJ Rap, Danielle Landreville's interests soon broadened from jungle and DnB to include techno, breaks, and especially booty and ghetto-tech. By 2003 Danielle was DJing regularly and, finding herself increasingly immersed in Montreal’s burgeoning underground electronic music community, began organizing raves and club nights with the Charlie Company collective, introducing to the city’s scene such innovative concepts as turntablism, with 2004’s breakbeat event Demz Da Breaks, or ghetto-tech, with 2005’s Konnekt. In addition to her regular involvement in Montreal’s Women On Wax events and Saphir’s Mix Thursday, 2006 sees Dirty Dan devoting more time to production and songwriting while continuing her pursuit of discovering, buying and mixing the dirtiest beats known to womankind. F!ghtF!ghtF!ght (OTT) [ www.myspace.com ] With influences ranging from Superchunk to King Crimson, Fugazi to The Anniversary and Wolf Parade, f!ghtf!ghtf!ght had a real task trying to discover their sound and, in a few short months, had completed enough material for an EP. Their songs, though difficult to compare to any other band, showed a definite basis in indie rock with catchy hooks and infectious beats. They started playing shows in October 2005 and soon had created some buzz around Ottawa with their danceable sound. Lady Ms Myrrh (No Format, OTT) [ www.myspace.com ] No Format Sundays were built by Lady Ms Myrrh in early 2005. DJ Booth has been an on and off special guests for some time now. Over time there have been many other guests....DW, Alexxx, DJ Dirt Stache and Chameleonic. No Format has seen some great live shows as well. We brought DIPLO to capital city as well as Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Ninja High School. There are alot more events in the works for 2006. |
