Brother Ali, Last Emperor & Bastid [ Static Link : iCal ]
City:Canada, Ontario, Ottawa
Time:Tue Sep 13, 2005 @ 9:00pm
Info:On Tuesday September 13, 2005, Kapacity Entertainments presents two highly respected underground hip-hop MCs, Brother Ali & The Last Emperor with guest DJ Skratch Bastid at Barrymore’s Music Hall.

After headlining the Live Brothers Tour (Brother Ali & JLive) and murdering the opening slot on Atmosphere’s God Loves Ugly Tour ( 2 of Ottawa’s best live hip-hop shows in recent memory), Brother Ali has quickly become an Ottawa favourite. On stage with only a DJ, Ali's magical gift for capturing the imagination of his audience has been compared to that of a gospel preacher. His voice, large stature and albino features make him a unique and commanding presence. Brother Ali has perfected the live performance, having played countless shows with his Rhymesayers Camp and others such as Guru, Mos Def, De La Soul, El-P, Aceyalone, Souls of Mischief and Living Legends just to name a few.

Ali has also made a name for himself in the battle ring, including making it to the finals of the 2000 and 2001 annual Scribble Jam MC battles. In 2003, Ali joined producer Ant (of Atmosphere fame) to create his critically acclaimed LP, Shadows of the Sun. With extremely high expectations for Ali’s next work, the Champion EP proved that he’s still standing victorious. Ali's music ranges from purpose to passionate, yet always soulful and true to the boastful heritage of hip-hop culture. An emcee, producer, host and overall party-starter, Brother Ali's talents are a well-defined portion of the Rhymesayers family.

So who is Jamal Gray? Socio-political thinker? Alumnus of the first historically black university, Lincoln University? Possessor of a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science/International Relation? An emcee, renown for his quick wit, lyrical skill and warrior like delivery that hails from the west side of Philadelphia? Who is he they ask? He is all of those things, however, each affirmative response is not the totality of his being. After graduating from Lincoln, he boarded an Amtrak train for New York to begin his journey as a recording artist. He entered various open mics to showcase his skills; one of his appearances was the popular Lyrist Lounge. Under the stage name, The Last Emperor, he became known mainly for his eminent stage presence and hypnotizing live shows.

Surprisingly, two short years after graduating from Lincoln, Last Emp obtained a major recording contract from Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment and continued to make a name for himself in the hip-hop underground. While navigating the uncertain terrain of various record labels (Aftermath, Rawkus, Hi-Rise), Last Emp notched impressive collaborations with artists such as the RZA, Jazzy Jeff, Dilated Peoples, Masta Ace, and Prince Paul and created underground cult classics such as the “Secret Wars” saga, Echo Leader, and the Umph. In 2003, he released his debut full-length on NYC-based Raptivism Records, Music, Magic, Myth. The Last Emperor is a much needed element in hip-hop. His consciousness and love for the culture can only better those experience his music.

One of the busiest dj's in Canada, Skratch Bastid will be holding down the decks for the evening. It's been a minute since the Bastid blessed us.

Also on the bill for this event are Ottawa’s own Flight Distance and Periodic Trends. Flight Distance has been making a lot of noise recently with their LP, "Run for your Lives". Make sure if you haven't copped that yet, you do. Some classic Ottawa biz. This will be the last opportunity to witness Periodic Trends perform as a group because they are starting to work on other projects. Come show love to Atherton, LS & DJ Sire
