Clara Engel is quickly gaining a following and carving a niche for herself as a brave, bold, and singular new voice. Both fierce and delicate, her music is reminiscent of an era in history when theatre, art, and music were an integral part of a bigger, more vital whole; an era that the 21st century is craving more than ever. Clara Engel has recorded and released six albums independently, and forged musical alliances with artists in London, Denmark, Brazil, New York, and Germany. He recently took up the piano and it has now become a key element in his compositions. Matching the instrument in his stylistic approach to the lyrics, Mekele offers up an experimental blend of free-form song structures and operatic vocal somersaults. His melodies draw from prog rock, psychedelia, jazz and musical theatre; his lyrics tell stories of love, loss, lust and longing. Former lead-singer, keyboard player and co-founder the Montreal post-rock band Marlowe (1995-2005), she has shared the stage with: Tindersticks, Snowpony (ex-My Bloody Valentine & Stereolab), April March, The Dears, Stars, The Besnard Lakes, The High Dials, and The Organ.
