Duane Andrewss music is the product of a great ear, an adventurous spirit and a love of music that is beyond category. Uniting what would seem to be impossible traditional Newfoundland music with the Gypsy Jazz of the legendary Django Reinhardt, Andrews makes it not just work he makes it soar. The award winning guitarist, composer, producer and international performers new album, Raindrops, is the best evidence yet of his truly unique musical vision and is the sound of him, literally, bringing it all back home. A native of the island of Newfoundland, off the east coast of Canada, Duane grew up exposed to the islands mélange of cultural influences a mix of English, French, Irish, Spanish and Portuguese - and his development as a guitarist reflects that. After graduating from the Jazz Studies program at St. FXU with honours, Duane spent several years studying contemporary music composition at the Conservatoire International de Paris and at the Conservatoire National de Region in Marseille, France. It was during his time in France that Reinhardts music had a profound impact on Duane. Upon returning to his home province of Newfoundland and Labrador he began fusing traditional Newfoundland music with Reinhardts style and his own original compositions. This work resulted in the 2004 release of his dynamic debut solo CD, simply titled, Duane Andrews, the 2006 release of the multiple award winning Crocus and his 2008 release Raindrops which features a collaboration with the Atlantic String Quartet. Based out of Montreal, Warhol Dervish is an unorthodox chamber music collective gathering together some of the most interesting and creative musicians in Canada. Pioneers and visionaries, Warhol Dervish uses the term "post-good" to describe it's approach. Made up of early-music HIPsters, new music specialists, ardent 19th century romantics, pop collaborators, rockstar wannabes, meditators and yogis, the members of the ensemble seek to move the chamber music concert experience into the 21st century. Post-good means that good has been done, and that WD reaches its audience through new channels. Warhol Dervish actively seeks to blur the lines that separate classical music from other styles, to rehearse as would a band, to collaborate with improvisers, to actively seek alternative spaces in which to perform, to collaborate with and learn from artists in other media. Currently headquartered in a 5000 square foot loft space in Griffintown called the Interstice, Warhol Dervish has begun hosting regular loft parties, performing works from Bach to Debussy, Philip Glass and Osvaldo Golijov in a festive and interactive environment. Within the umbrella of Warhol Dervish are smaller permanent ensembles, such as the Lotus Trio, who are currently awaiting their first commission, by Toronto composer Rose Bolton, a collaboration with vocalist Lhasa de Sela based on the erotic love songs of the 6th Dalai Lama, due to be completed by summer 2009. The members of Warhol Dervish draw on their professional experience working with artists and playing in ensembles as diverse as Ensemble Kore, Arion, Patrick Watson, Lhasa de Sela, Bradyworks, Claude Lamothe, Ensemble Caprice, SMCQ, the Molinari Quartet, and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra |
