Hi, im working on a sociology project at school. We need to make a project about a subculture. I love electronic music and raves, so i chose to make it about raves. I got some questions that i would like to ask you about some aspects of the raves.

First, drugs is a part of raves. A lot of people at raves are taking some drugs, my question is, why do you guys take drugs? What does it change?

Secondly, why are you going to raves? What is the difference between raves and clubs, what are the mains reasons that make you go to raves?

Thank you for your time, sorry if the quality of my english is bad, im doing my best.

I'm feeling <3 sexi_babe_69 right now..

First, drugs is a part of raves. A lot of people at raves are taking some drugs, my question is, why do you guys take drugs? What does it change?

------ Straight off the bat a lot of people are going to tell you that drugs are not that big of a deal within the nightlife culture.. well those people are either full of shit, plain ignorant or advocate to give the rave scene that beautiful image of love & sobriety to reassure society that there is nothing to be feared about by letting your 16 y/o daughter attempt an event. Well .. no ..Drugs are & were a "huge" part of the nightlife culture since even before the disco years ..and why not ? They keep you up, full of energy, puts you in a state of euphoria that make you feel like you're on top of the world, and can turn the most reserved / shy person into a party animal (I'm talking about drugs in general here.. not stating one in particular..) Let's not kid ourselves, people do drugs because they are fun .. dangerous yes!.. But fun nonetheless regardless what people say. It is up to the individuals to set themselves limits.

Secondly, why are you going to raves?

------- Well, there are many reasons why a person would attempt an event, I would say that the most popular would be because it just feels like night long party filled with music they really enjoy, surrounded with people that share common interests (Maybe an specific artist playing for example). I suppose that some people are taking it to an other level, celebrating a spiritual state of mind .. but I am not going to elaborate to much on that one ..

What is the difference between raves and clubs, what are the mains reasons that make you go to raves?

-------- In a nutshell, raves a more liberal (free minded).. Clubs on the other hand are perceived as more conservatives (within the scene) and often considered as more glamorous.. (Rest assure that look's can be rather deceiving on this matter.. Speaking from experience I've seen more sad sight in clubs then in raves. )

Hope this helps !

Yeah because you guys knows a lot of informations about rave, i prefer to ask questions to you than ask questions to douches who go to Bal en blanc for example. Fell free to awnsers if you fell to.

@thatguyoverthere, for the drug thing, i think to that drugs are not a essential part of raves, but there still a majority of people that take some right? I don't think than 16 years old who goes to raves to pop some molly are the poeple i want to analyse for my work, do you think there other reasons why people take drugs? Example, back in the 60's, hippies weren't only taking LSD for the fun, it was a way to discover new things and to fight agains't the technocracy. Do you think there might be other reasons for taking drugs like that last example?

Thank you for your time and please forgive me for my spelling mistakes.

I'm totally with you on this!

Tangerine, it seems you have a bit of an understanding of the mentality as well. You said in your earlier message "...than ask questions to douches who go to Bal en blanc for example...". Although I appreciate events like the Bal en Blanc, the mentality there is much different. In the scene people tend to have more of an open mind and are just there to have fun.

And at the end of the day, I have rarely witnessed a bad experience at a rave... On the other hand, I have seen some really bad shit go down in bars/clubs/afterhours.

Feel free to ask some more if you need to :)
I'm feeling what what in da butt right now..

@Nemorave, ive never been to Bal en Blanc for example, what i wanted to say is i don't think people who go to bal en blanc would go on a rave who is more ''underground'', even if there some.

Also, if you had to give the mains difference between raves and clubs, what would they be?

Secondly, do you still see a lot of free party going on? If yes, is there more in Europe than America?

Thank you guys.

The music for one is almost entirely different. You will find much less mainstream music in underground events. Which brings me to my next point..

People drawn to raves (and keep coming back) usually have a different view on music and are much more open minded to meet new people and share thoughts. You will also find a lot of people who do not identify with "society" for a bunch of different reasons. If you go to a party, you are guaranteed to find new potential friends throughout the night. Drugs do play a part in this for some people but in my experience, the ones who stay usually do because of the music and the experiences they get from socializing with others. At the risk of sounding super cheesy, the underground scene is like a huge clan or family (depending on how you view things).

As far as free parties are concerned, there has been surge of these events in the past few years. They happen practically every weekends during the summer. I honestly don't know whether they are more popular in Europe or America but they sure are very present in Montreal.

Finally, I strongly recommend you come over to at least one event for your research so that you can see for yourself. Who knows, you might like it a lot :). PM me if you're interested

For me I see rave as a culture and the happy hardcore, hardtech, psytrance scene (ect) as a subculture.

I agree with Nemorave, you must see it by yourself. What "normal people" think...

and what actually happen is different. Lots of prejudgements.

Previous members comments are bang on as for raves and clubs.

On the drugs subject, I do take drugs but only to enhance my senses and give me tons of energy but I give myself limits (Well, most of the times, lol), I see no points to get totally spaced out as it get counterproductive to the experience. However, many times I enjoyed raves and underground events without drugs.

For me the rave scene is a place where all people from different horizons, with diffrent point of views, from different races, culture, sexual orientation...ect, can get together in peace and have a united synergy on the dance floor. From my entire life, I experienced this feeling nowhere else, this is what keep me coming back. Also, raves was a mind-opening experience for me, it changed my life, my views and in a really good way.

Raves have also a history: [ www.djtechtools.com ]

Very good resume. But I don't agree with the end title "The end of the rave era", it still going strong totay and all around the world. The vibe evolved but not disappeared.

Hope this help and I hope to see you in one rave someday ;-)
I'm feeling like frikkin lazers! right now..
