well I'm on dial-up for a week or so thus can't benefit from my usual pastime of browsing (well I can go on reasonable sites but a good portion weigh a lot having many JS, styles, enticing sections (unrelated info)) and streaming but luckily IRC works great on 56k however my usual channels are technical-related.

I'm not interested in cybersex nor knitting.

Well there's still [ us.undernet.org ] #montreal, #montrèal, #quebec . There should be some people who will lead you to great servers/channels, even tho undernet is mostly for trolling purposes =P
I'm feeling half empty right now..

Mirc still exists, though not everyone who chats on IRC use software separate from their browser anymore.
I'm feeling gleeful right now..

Yep, still does. And both montreal's channels are in the 100-200 users pretty much at anytime ;)

It's IRC, mirc being the chat client. And most people still use a client, such as mirc, xchat, etc.

My advice tho: don't click any link you're not sure of, because there's some good hackers on irc. I was lucky enough to be warned about that by a white hat =). But still, when the guy show up in your pm with your unguessable password... You might freak out =P

anybody can host an irc host with channel , plugins for irc clients in firefox such as chatzilla puts the interface straight into your browser , no need to plow more ports or add firewall exception , free packages to host an irc in all *nix , most developpers use irc to chat inbetween people managing the project ; the AROS team does that , backtrack team does that , most ppl either use irc for real time consulting , or have to go with an asynchonous system like majordomo that use emails , is prone to spammers and requires you have an email address .... like openbasd devel team

if something works , why abandon it just for the new hype ? i dont see people using microsoft messenger anymore.... tell a lot on net program survival ; be free and live or spy/force users to upgrade and loose the race.

yeah, I has a sugestion: let's nuke it from orbitz!!!
It's old, derelict, useless, and nobody worthwhile uses it anymore.

IRC was usefull for networking. Like peeps from different bbs's I used to hang out on. IRC allowed for a global chat and all.

I think the need for it just went way down. Now, from what I can gather, IRC is a hipster thing. Not very efficient, but vintage, so you look all l33t and stuff. (I was chattin' on a BASH account before the interwebs had images!)

Now it's utterly useless.
it can die for all I care.
I'm feeling toxik right now..

Damn douchebag =P Not because you don't use it anymore, that there's nobody worth chatting with. There's some heavyweight hackers (not crackers, hackers) and geeks, as well as some interesting people like everywhere. To me, it's pretty much the same as a forum, but in real time. Used it few times when it was hot, but i've been logging every once in a while for a year now, had some goos times =)
