maybe your headphones are built to work better in a studio and need more juice than your mp3 player can give to work properly. However, this answer is far-fetched and the real one is probably that your mp3 player is cheap and therefore does not provide high volume. If you're on a PC, buy a Samsung player (between 80-140 depending on the models) they are not user-friendly but provide an awesome definition as well as the capacity to become deaf quite quickly (but they are NOT recognized by Macs, so don't bother plugging a samsung player in a mac).

You can also check in your MP3 settings if the ''volume limiter'' is ON. Usually it's OFF by default though

I'm not sure if it screws with the sound but taking equalizer up (all the bars equally) make it louder.

honestly, I think the problem is either the quality of the MP3, or most likely, the fact that tunes on Beatport are all ''professional'', and the tunes on here and Soundcloud are pretty much amateur productions (no offense to all producers, myself included) ... some programs like Fruity-Loops tend to have low out-put when tracks are exported - so it's not so much the producers fault, there's just a post-mastering step missing in the process, which is fine, except that the tunes' volume might be lower ...

this is only a theory!

I think it's a bitrate issue. 128 kbps mp3s will play a little less louder ( and less defined ) than 256 ones. 96 kbps mp3s sound like facing the speakers against the wall then burying them in a ton of pillows.

0 dbFS is 0dbFS in any DAW. If it doesn't sound loud enough to your liking, it ain't the DAW's fault...

post mastering is... either pressing or distribution... in the case of vinyl there the vinyl engineer will have a final tweek at the master to ensure that the track can be physically etched on to a piece of vinyl... but otherwise mastering is the very last step before production...

A good, dynamic mix might not need any processing on the master at all... traditionally, in electronic music, everything is brought up to 0dbFS (or 0.2dbFS to leave a teeny bit of headroom for dithering) but you don't really need to go to a mastering engineer just to adjust the gain of a tune to get it to peak at 0 (or 0.2dbFS) you can just throw your tune into audacity and do an auto-gain on it...

As far as loudness is concerned... amateur producers should not try to match loudness of professional recordings. Make the mix as nice as you can and have all the instruments (or parts) be where they should. Use a compressor on the master if you feel that the sound is too dynamic but please... don't use it just to make shit louder... use turn the volume knob clockwise till it's loud enough

I guess that's kinda what I meant, that final 'ready for mass production' step is missing, so you get the raw volume instead of the CD quality volume ... if that makes sense ...

I know 0db = 0db on any DAW, but there's something strange about FruityLoops, if you stay under the red, no matter what you do, the tune still sounds slightly lower than most. It' always been a mystery to me .. if you can explain that, please do so! (maybe I'm just crazy) xD

I'd have to test it say with a test tone or a pink noize... but I'd be curious to see when going from one daw to another if you have the same peak and average level going out of the sound card at playback and on the export...

maybe you wanna try that out, throw a pink noize in both daws, 0db on outputs, 0db on the sample, no stretching, no processing, no noffin'... export 24-bit undithered wavs and compare the two... I doubt they'd pass a null test but they should at least have comparable peak and average levels as well same loudness.

If not... then I'm gonna need to check you rig out and do a bit of research...

unmastered songs (I'm assuming the soundcloud ones are) tend to have a lower volume since they have not gone through a limiter to gain the sound ( I like to use the word crush)..

Also big sennheisers probably need more power than the mp3 player can provide.. It's called impedance. You want lower impedance phones for portable players.. Or some kind of battery powered headphone amp that would likely cost more than your mp3 player.

I use Fruity Loops, and ALWAYS have it in the reds, and it sounds fine... I only export it lower, when i have to send to mastering.
