Isn't it a bit weird to accept a booking to play some kinda music you don't really know ... ?

I was wondering the same thing.. shouldn't you be getting booked because the promoter likes what you play and knows you can play it well.. It's kind of like booking Tiesto and saying "Oh, by the way, can you please do a set of mongolian throat singing?"..
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

lol. reminds me of this guy I saw posting on [ ragga-jungle.com ] a few weeks back. he posts on the forum, saying how much he loves oldskool jungle, and wants recommendations on the names of some really good 93/94 jungle tracks. sure, no problem. we all posted up the names of some of our favourite records.

then he asked if we wouldn't mind ripping those 12"s to 320 for him. apparently he was booked to play an oldskool set. but he didn't really have any good tunes, and wasn't interested in spending a lot of money on oldskool wax.

so not only did he want to know what he should play, but also wanted us to rip him a whole set worth of 320s, so he could do this gig.

=)

sure, just shows you're willing to sell out

honestly, and maybe I'm too old for this, but if I was in your position, I'd have turned down the gig. how are you going to mix psybreaks anyway? that shit takes practice no?

i think a good dj plays what the crowd wants to hear, and can adapt to different kind of vibes, while still keeping an edge that is un-familiar, new territories... which is exactly what he'll be doing.

next weekend though, that's pretty short notice because you won't have much time to know the genre at all, but whatever, maybe this is the start of an interesting direction. never too old to accept a challenge. never too old to get out of the box ;)

that said, i don't trip on psy-breaks, or at least what i have heard of it so far. so i can't help you on your quest ;P

Going to a gig without actually knowing the style you're gonna play is always a risky gamble

You could end up being the dj who fucks up the whole party, and no one wants to be that guy ;)

That being said, playing different crowds will enlarge your horizons and if you can pull it off more props to you, just make sure you do some homework before so you don't get stuck.

My advice, forget the whole "psy" angle and just focus on playing a good "breaks" set. Ragga breaks are always a sure winner, funky breaks are always welcome, anything bouncey and happy is a good bet too.

Remember if you have a wider selection of stuff, it will help you navigate through any rough patches you might encounter.

what is psy-breaks anyway? when I hear that name, I picture it sounding like the trippy old breakbeat from raves way way back in the early days. like Future Sound Of London or something.. which would be good thing. but it's probably not like that

or, well, don't just limit yourself to psy-breaks, but do play everything that is breaks and trippy...

I am not sure I understand what you mean. How is accepting a challenge making him a sell-out? Sure it's risky to accept a job where you may be under qualified, but a sell-out!? I don't get it. Please explain.

Badder can spin many types of psy-trance, I've even heard him spin ambient-type and electro-type music. I've always heard him do more than just beat match the end of a track with the beginning of the next, not always but often. I've also seen him gauge the crowd, change up a bit what he was playing right in the middle of his set, he has an awesome sense of groove. And I am saying this about a DJ that doesn't even play my favourite type of psy !

If anyone can pull it off, I think it's him. Do some music shopping and practice every day.

I'd also like to point out that no one has actually helped him... you've all bitched.

Do any of you know any psybreak!? Can any of you send him some artist names or something...!?

Good Luck dude! :)

selling out is when you accept to do something you don't usually do in return for the fame/reputation/money it will get you

it doesn't make him a bad person tho

Well personally I wasn't bitching, I was actually just offering some advice as a dj who's been playing breaks for over a decade ;) The point I was trying to make is that he dosen't neccessarily have to stick to "psy breaks" at a breaks party.

The first FSOL album has some amazing breakbeat tunes on it, might sound a little dated today, but this one was great :)

There was a comp Sasha and Digweed did back in the day called "Northern Lights" or something, that one had a lot of old trancey breakbeat tunes like this on it.

Acid breaks are also quite trippy...I think a psy crowd would enjoy these type of breaks

so, according to you, every time you try something that you don't usually do you sell out?
that's bullshit. how can you pretend you know his motivations?
