Hello,

Having been recently introduced to what I think is the rave scene, I have a few questions about this type of social event. As an open-minded individual, I have been thinking of attending one of these all night raves to experience this particular subculture. Any and all replies will be appreciated.

Firstly, a little about myself.
I'm a 21 year old white male living in downtown Montreal (fucking love this city) currently working full time but plan to return for my third year at Concordia University (JMSB) in May.
I grew up in Ottawa and have been smoking weed since the seventh grade, drinking since the eighth (we got pretty bored in the 'burbs) and I was pumped to move out for university when I was 18.
Living in Montreal and attending university has had their effects on me, in terms of experiencing things. I grew up in a great community but it was a rather narrow-minded environment, and to make a long story short, I have opened my mind to an extremely wide range of ideas and concepts and it is to that effect why I am posting on this site. I also started trying new drugs since university and it is to those decisions that I give credit to some of my beliefs, views and critical thought. I first did cocaine in my first year and have been doing MDMA on about a monthly basis since summer 2010 (needless to say I love that shit). The point is I love to party.
A few other things - when not at work, I work out about 4 days a week, I like to game, play hockey, watch movies, pump out music, read (fiction and non-fiction) and most of all socialize (hanging out with friends, getting baked with friends/people, getting fucked up every weekend, etc.

I went to Kaskade in October, Steve Angello in November, and Bloody Beetroots just last night. I was high on m for all those events and absolutely LOVED every minute of them (especially Angello). I have also been to Circus Afterhours which is either a full on rave or the closest thing to it, I'm really not sure.
I am curious as to what degree that these DJ events are similar to a rave or not, so I'm asking those in the know. I would also like to know the kinds of things that take place at a rave.

Is everybody on drugs? What kind of drugs? Is it mostly young people that attend (like the DJ shows)? Where and when do they occur, and for how long? What's the music like, is it anything like the Electro-House music that I have recently begun to enjoy (examples of artists would be Bloody Beetroots, Swedish House Mafia, deadmau5, David Guetta, among others)?
Is it just purely dancing for hours on end? Do people hook up afterwards? What kind of people generally attend raves (for example their class, are they students/ full time workers?)
What qualifies a rave? I'm sure most of you know Circus and that's where I experienced what I think is a rave. What a sweet venue, well kept, crazy ass lights, awesome DJ when I was there at least.

What comes to mind for most people when they think of a rave is some dirty underground warehouse where everyone is absolutely fucked on drugs with zombie looks on their face. Now I'm sure those kinds of things exist but I have learned to reserve judgment until actually experiencing it, which is why I'm thinking of going to one of those things. I love experiencing new shit because I believe that's really what makes life enjoyable and I'm extremely interested in these subcultures that you wouldn't really know exist if you weren't involved.

Anyways I hope you all can enlighten me as much as possible, I hope I got my point/inquiry across clearly enough and again, your time and thought are appreciated.

Welcome aboard!

Circus is to raves what a Big Mac is to a home-cooked Fillet Mignon dinner - it's just the mass-marketed, easily-accessible, socially-acceptable place to go do drugs and hang around with "beautiful people". The music they play in there, while good (if you're into that) is pretty much the watered-down pop-music equivalent of electronic music. To keep with the comparison-style from before, what you hear at Circus as opposed to a rave is the equivalent of going to see a Backstreet Boys cover band when you've got an opportunity to see Led Zeppelin.

Raves can be dirty (they're generally not always that clean), but it's about a lot more than just looking good and trying to hook up with every hot girl you see while showing off your muscles - it's about making friends and meeting people who are passionate about music.. Passionate enough to seek out the events that aren't mass-advertised and corporate-sponsored like a night out at Circus..

And yeah, a lot of people go to get totally fucked on drugs, a lot go to dance all night, some go to socialize, some go to listen to music.. The key thing though is the passion for the non-standard and for looking for an experience that's beyond the pre-canned, pre-packaged garbage you can pick up at the local supermarket.

For the music, there's a ton of different stuff, from Dubstep to DnB to Hardcore to Psytrance to Hardstyle.. There's a ton of amazing DJs in each style in the city.
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

circus afterhours is NOT a rave, it's an afterhours.
the men there are like hyenas ready to bounce on whatever meat (women) left unattended.
it's... disturbing. lol.

people at raves are usually a lot more chill...
do they do more drugs? i don't know...
there are and will always be a good portion of sober ravers.
and in psy-trance parties you will also see many people on acid, which you most probably won't encounter at the circus.

i don't know the music you mentionned, but i am guessing it is pretty mainstream. most raves have more underground, specific music styles. if you enter this world you will hear many different types of lesser known and really good electronic music. most people in raves are more passionate about the music they listen to than people who go to the circus.

Screwhead,

That's wicked, I'm glad I haven't experienced the real thing. I have now decided that I want to attend a legit rave. If you could let me know how to find these things that would be sweet. Also, any tips on how to dress? I normally just wear a solid green UnderArmour tee but apparently that will give off the wrong vibe lol. In Circus' defense, I had a great time there and to be quite honest picking up girls and drunkenly banging the shit out of them after the bar/club can be a lot of fun. Now I understand that's not part of the norm at a rave and this information is exactly what I was looking for in posting here, so I know what to expect and to blend in more.
I understand what you're saying about the music. My main genre is rap & hip-hop and apparently what I like is the Drake of electro music. Whatever I'm new to the genre and I love those heavy drops and bumping shit. You mentioned dubstep, also a new interest of mine, sparked by Mt Eden.
If you guys could toss me some links to rave music for a rookie as well as suggest any events to go to for a first time that would be much appreciated.

P.S. Anyone who thinks I'm a cop can fist themselves.

you don't want to blend in at a rave.
raves encourage people to express who they are, so no matter how you dress it's not what's important. what's important is that you feel good in what you wear... because you'll be dancing in it! :P
though i'd advise not to wear too expensive clothes, because raves can be dirty... other than that you could borrow your grandmother's nightgown if you want, and you'll be accepted just as much as if you wear jeans and a t-shirt.
that's a part i really love about raves, there is no limits to the crazyness... and sometimes, the weirder = the better... but maybe if you don't like drawing attention to yourself for your first time you'll want to be more of an observator... just come as you are :)
I'm feeling inspired right now..

For events, just check the Event Calendar on the site here! There are a bunch of weekly nights that have a fair bit of stuff you'd hear at a rave.

and if you look for the actual raves on the events calendar, there is a color code... just in case you haven't noticed. ;)
raves are coded in red. :)

ROFL I can't believe I completely agree with Screwhead for once.

There are lots of sober ravers. I'm always sober and I've been going to all sorts of raves for almost 10 years now! Nobody will judge you badly for being sober or on drugs (as long as it's not causing you to start shit with anyone). You can wear whatever you like.

The only real code of conduct at a rave is not to be mean to anyone, not to fight over anything, and to be respectful of the females. At clubs while it's more of a grinding hook-up market, raves are there for the party itself! You'll meet a lot of interesting people and there is often great artwork to enjoy and a variety of music. The most intense and amazing times are usually in the summer at outdoor parties in the forest. Imagine camping for a few days in a beautiful spot, dancing on a beach with fire and black light decorations the jumping into the river in the sunshine with awesome electronic music and smoothies!

A lot of the time when people always party with drugs, when they stop doing drugs they stop partying since they associate the two together. It's not a rule but it happens often. You can have great experiences with and without drugs but be careful which ones you do and how much you do it. If you appreciate the party and the music with and without drugs, then if (just if, one day) you get tired of drugs then you can keep enjoying going to parties anyways :D

Raves are more openminded than afterhours. Age of ravers in general vary from 16 to 35 but you can find older people sometimes. Back in 2007 you were able to find some electro-house-techno parties but now is mostly Psytrance and Dubstep that dominate the scene. Nobody will judge you by what you wear, the drug you take or how you dance, it's your freedom! The cool thing about raves is you dont need to take drugs, alchol is welcome also in almost every parties, read the event page or ask the promoter just to be sure. For my part, I go to raves every mounth or so, sometimes drinking beer only and dancing until 4 am then returning home in taxi. I can also party like a freak, around the clock on drugs but with my career, it become more difficult(Ruff monday-tuesday mornings, ouch!).

Most of the raves are legal but bust happen sometimes when "The music was too loud, we got complaints". Yes, people "chill" after a rave, at somebody house's(it may get over crowded very fast), in a park or at Musik at the mountain during summer. You never know what you gonna get before an event, you can get a sweet venue, well kept, crazy ass lights like you said or something more sober, it depend of the promoters but be ready for anything!

LoL, raves operating hours are between 22h and 8-9h.

I want to answer more of your questions but im out of time, dont be shy to ask more specific things in your next post.

Plur expression was invented by Frankie Bones:

Frankie's history : PLUR Creator

Frankie Bones (real name Frank Mitchell) is an American techno and house music disc jockey from New York City. He is best known for bringing the rave culture to the United States after playing at a hangar party in the UK during 1989.

He got his first inspiration from his father's vast record collection after his father was murdered. Later on, after he had started producing records, he was offered a gig to play for 5,000 people in England on the strength of his compositions. As the event started on 26 August 1989, the projected attendance had gone through the roof and Frankie played for 25,000 people as the sun came up. Being profoundly moved by the experience, he brought it back to Brooklyn with his series of "Storm Raves".

At one of these parties, a fight broke out and Frankie got on a speaker, screaming at the fighters "If you don't start showing some peace, love, and unity, I'll break your fucking faces". With the subsequent discussion of this event on the Usenet newsgroup alt.rave, Respect was added to the three virtues Frankie was speaking of, creating the hippie-esque raver credo of PLUR: Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect.

His brother, Adam X, is a well-known techno DJ and producer. Frankie Bones, Adam X, Heather Heart and others are associated with the record label Sonic Groove.

DON'T Miss Frankie Bones himself in town February 4th for LImouzine Magazine! BLOP

I have to say the Bloody Beetroots show was really nice!! And Deadmau5 in show...amazing!! Imagine a show with those 2 and Boya noize! WOW!
But rave are not that kind of music, but believe me it's even better! the crowd and ambiance is the best you can find for partying. You say your listen to hip hop, electro house and dubstep, so try the psy, it's the most powerful of all ( that's my opinion, not the same for everybody for sure ) And don't think about what you look in event, just think about having pur fun.
If you want weekly events to try before going in rave try those:
Prismcode thuesday ( minimal teck, prog, psy ) really a nice night
Bassdrive Wednesday ( dubstep, Drum&bass )
Freakuency wednesday ( prog to psy )
Multiverse ( not every week, Prog to psytrance )

There's also the Igloofest coming up, you should try this.
I'm feeling real good! right now..
