Part of being a DJ is being a business, So how much you get booked and how much $ you make means a lot.

Just saying.

You can trick people with 'scratch' samples

Most people just want to hear their catchy lady gaga remix, not scratches

on sunday my brother played at Passport, and when the next DJ was on and playing a set of electro, some 450 looking girls came up and said "tu peu tu y d'mander d'arrete de joue du boum-boum et d'metre du rock ou du metal? Y a persone qui aime ca du boum-boum"
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

I make on average between $1,500 and $2,000 a month djing alone, sometimes more

I get booked a lot because I know A LOT about music, not just one style, but many styles, and I say that in the nerdiest way possible, been researching music about 5 or 6 hours everyday day since I was 11.

To me a good dj is a dj who can read a crowd and adapt, without compromising his/her style

A common rule in djing is 70% is track selection, 30% mixing

A common mistake a lot of djs make, especially techno and dnb djs, is they focus all their energy on the mixing without paying attention to the room.

People won't care if you mix great if they are not feeling what you're playing.

Next step

You want to get booked a lot, study my career

If you want to NOT get booked alot, follow in the footsteps of guys like Host One

First step, disrespect any big promoter, the bigger the better. Make sure they really dislike you and basically make sure you will never play a big event in Montreal

Second step, pick some old schools djs and basically lob a bunch of insults and challenges their way. This is a great to make sure you get a bad name with the old schoolers who people often forget have all known each other for a long time and are often consulted when it comes to booking new comers.

Third step, once you managed to piss off all the main promoters and disrecpected the oldschoolers who built the very scene you're shitting in, make sure you get some gigs playing for free at some house parties.

Fourth step...well the fourth step is you're 30 and you played a bunch of gigs for free

My 2 cents
I'm feeling sunshine right now..

agreed!
i've noticed that most people don't even know when a mix is in the process
a track selection that depends on the crowd's vibe is key and the only way to go

thorough musical knowledge is a must (even better if it's for many different genres) don't take the audience for idiots, some of us actually do listen and are not around just for socializing

although, personally, i'll pay a lot more attention to the mixing and technical skills
why so? i find quality mixing is the backbone of a set and so much more pleasant, it shows when effort was put into a set
cheap mixing (for example: switching tracks exactly after the 4-4 count without having introduced the other track at all) is a disrespect to the tracks being used and it annoys the f**k out of me

when it comes to track selection, especially for dnb, i'll respect a dj even more for playing something less known than the usual anthems...don't get me wrong i ♥ heavy anthems BUT there's over 15 years of dnb to choose from. Let's not get redundant

i believe djing is an artform and there's only a little percentage of people can live up to the challenge
it's not because someone has rhythm and can count to 4 that they can necessarily dj

i've heard so many shitty djs over the years(will not name names)
but the worst of it all is witnessing some guy/chick pull out a cd or a usb key, press play, and "fake play" around with the mixer = disgusting!!

that simply proves that some djs are around only for the fame and the groupies

but that's just my opinion
...

my advice:

A)practice

B)research

C)professionalism, whatever the situation it'll be remembered, "it can take 20 years to build a good reputation but only 5 seconds to destroy it"

D)be nice: don't take the audience and followers for granted...PLEASE leave the overinflated superstar dj ego at home!
djs are not gods or a divine intervention

in the end, the crowd always has the last word
I'm feeling don't hate the player, hate the right now..

I'm sure if they made a movie about me, you'd be the first to watch it lol...One word "Obsession"

Dude, just cause you're dj career amounted to playing Crookers mp3s in your bedroom and now you're boring and married with your 9 to 5 job and memories of your last rave 12 years ago

Don't mean you need to act like some jealous twat 24/7.

People ask me if we used to date, can you believe that? Lol...

6 parties the week after (4 private events, that means you can't come), onel oft party (you're not invited) but you can come to KO, I'm playing with RCOla

Bliss, unlike you, my life's achievements aren't calculated in how successful of a DJ I am because, oh I don't know, I'm not uni-dimensional like you are. I don't spend every waking moments basking in the glow of my DJing awesomeness and discussing it in length on a message board because I like to do other things in my life than spin records and
shove it down everyone's throat at each opportunity I get.

I like to read and learn about other stuff that doesn't involve DJing, my work actually involves helping people out, I don't use other people's material as a means to pay the bills, I have a wonderful wife who organized a surprize party for me last
week where 43 of my friends - who aren't "fans" that hang out at a bar I play - showed up to drink, laugh and tell me how glad they were to be there ( when was the last time THAT happened to you, if ever ? ), they don't have to pay a cover charge to come see me play and I get to bang a beautiful girl every night without having to get her hammered on cheap shooters in a bar.

So I ask : why. the fuck. would I possibly want to be jealous of you about, exactly ? Your brilliant DJ carrier ? More power to you, my friend. Say hello to Tiesto for me next time you wake up next to him, mkay ?

Brief summary of this topic : OH LOOK AT ME! I'M SUCH A GREAT DJ! I'M MAKING MONEY OUT OF IT SO I MUST BE A GREAT DJ! 15 YEARS OLD GIRLS WET THEIR PANTIES WHEN THEY SEE ME!

When does people will learn that the only reason which you shoud be doing this is for music?
The producer that made that "unique underground track that no one else plays but you" you're playing right now will probably earn less money than you anyway.

Fuck, even now I'm ashame when someones describes me to other people as a DJ.

That's pretty much why I'm only doing live PA nowadays.
I'm feeling horny right now..

beats a 9-5 job, but making 20-25k a year isn't much really, especially considering the cost of records

I'm feeling like tweaking that drum kit right now..
