I used to go to Bovine Sex Club ... cool bar. I'm sure it must still be there... Queen St. W between Spadina and Bathurst

and when I lived in my old hood in Kensington Market there was Planet Kensington where Bunch of Fucking Goofs always hung out... but I just googled it now and I guess it's closed down

I'm not into punk, so that's all I know, but the Bovine is definitely a cool bar..

If you're looking for more of a pub/place to eat at some point, my fave is always Sneaky Dee's. Cheap beers, good greasy texmex dive bar food (the King's Crown [ nachos..ca ] go wrong). They regularly have punk shows upstairs. I love the vibe there - dingy dive with really friendly staff and croud. I just checked and their site is down, but check later on [ www.sneaky-dees.com ]

Another decent spot for a more relaxed night is Sweaty Betty's (on Ossington just north of Queen West). Small, laid back, wicked atmosphere. Big back patio that's great when the weather is nice. When i have been they mostly play 60s 70s rock. Always awesome service and again, a great friendly crowd.
I'm feeling the vibrations right now..

hell ya! it used to be called Pepper ... just around the corner from my old place on Oxford. my roommate worked there, so we'd sometimes set up turntables in the back and have a little party... I love that place...

I like pretty much *any* sunny patio in Kensington Market in the summer... Last Temptation, La Palette, sitting in the park there with some beers can be chill too... though I gotta say, cops in Toronto are wayyy less tolerant of that sort of thing than Montreal

where else... this bar on Queen St. W opposite Trinity Bellwoods park... called the Done Right Inn =) really cool... comfy couch by the front, and a nice courtyard with a big tree in the back

Cadillac Lounge on Queen W at Dufferin has a lot of Rockabilly people who go there and Rockabilly bands too... and a huuuge back patio with a pool table. I used to hang there a lot when I lived in Parkdale

ya ya!! how could I forget Sneaky Dee's ?? that was the first bar in Toronto I ever went to in 1994.

We'd come up from Hamilton, go to Sneaky Dee's and order numerous pitchers... then my friends would always find some dodgy local to buy shrooms or acid from, and then around 1 AM we'd head off to the jungle party.

good ol' Sneaky Dees... great nachos and food there... and the kitchen is open really late too.

in that neighbourhood on College, there's also Andy Pool Hall, Rancho Relaxo and Free Times Cafe - on Sunday afternoons Free Times has this traditional Jewish Eastern European buffet which is really good, and they have Klezmer music as well

that's all I got.. I haven't actually lived in Toronto in over 3 years so I'm out of the loop.

oh - one last one... it's not a bar... but a cool place to chill and have good coffee and people watch... Moonbeam, in Kensington Market =)

that used to be my meeting spot for when I was selling records to random DJ people =)

ya I haven't set foot in Sneaky Dee's in about 5 years...

way back in the day, I seem to remember the clientele being a little on the grimey side - but grimey with character - lots of punks and ravers and just slightly dodgy people... which I prefer to hipster douchebags any day of the week.

I guess it's changed

Sweaty bettys is super chill... and they got steam whistles!!!
But toronto rock bars are frickin' tiny and usually over run by hipsters who are like "so vintage" that they wouldn't be seen haggling with the dollar store clerks in parkdale without their daddys duran duran tee shirt on, so i wouldnt expect too much...
I think they have some rockabilly nights at the Cadillac lounge on queen, which is kinda tacky but has a nice terrase with out door pool tables in the back.
and there's a crew of roller derby girls that do some riot grrrl type events at the el mocambo sometimes, but you gotta check the calender.
I've been to bovine once and it was actually super lame when i went, but it coulda just been an off night?
If you can find the calendar there's big bops (almost across the street from bovine) that has punk, goth and industrial shows pretty often, but its a show too bar so you gotta go on the right nights if you really wanna hang with the smelly ppl. =P
most of the cool spots are on or around the grimey parts of queen west of bathhurt though...
when i'm in town i usually just bar hop from dive to dive in parkdale and then hit a club (which you might be better off doing in the first place).
honestly... the dive bar scene in montreal is way better, but clubbing can be pretty epic if you pick the right night.
you might like the beaver... not really a rock bar but it's fag hag central and a good place to have a meal and a couple pints after the food stops, so it might be up your alley too?
I'm feeling republican right now..

if you wanna chill and get stoned during the day check out [ hotboxcafe.ca ] very very cool spot in kensington. lol and you might just run into us there. oh and btw, toronto cops are way less tolerant about everything, except smoking pot on the street. they wont hassle you at all for that. but you might want to stay away june 26 and 27 cause of the g20 summit. that will be the most fucked up weekend here and there will be as many cops as protestors. same goes for caribanna which i believe is the following weekend
