Don't misunderstand, the reason you book other promoters at your parties is:
1. Because they have a great sense of what people want to hear.
2. Because if they come to your event, hear YOU spin and like you, you'll have been 'discovered'.
3. Because they have a good reputation and influence and a following of sorts.
NOT:
4. as a trade for a booking at their event.

You only trade bookings if 1,2 and 3 already apply.

I posted a rather TL;DR on Facebook the other day that in part addresses the topic:

IMO that's something that every single DJ and Promoter should give a read, despite it being like 15 pages long.
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

Had time this morning to read it all.
Seriously, I'm glad to see that someone wrote about all the stuff I noticed over the years I've been in the "scenes". (Matter of fact, it's only been 4 years now that I attend raves. So I guess it's just something that is really an evidence than something no one notices.)

It really sounds like someone wrote everything that was on my mind.
I'm feeling horny right now..

I thought the exact same thing... Most people aren't in it for the love of the music, and the only way to get booked these days is to not just be a DJ but also a promoter so that you can throw events and book other promoter-DJs in what becomes an unspoken circle-jerk agreement..

Just a question : in the whole music world, is there a specific scene that it's all about music?
The only one I can see right now is electroacoustics but I see this as meetings of geeks listening to weird sounds.

I think it's more of an evolution that every scene goes through..

First come the innovators; the people that are doing something new and working a sound that no one else is working..

then it takes off a little; it's still 'underground', but more people know about it or have heard it, even if they don't know what that was..

Then if the genre is "lucky", out comes the full-on pop-recognition; everyone's heard of it, everyone knows the artists the mainstream latched onto, you get 15 nights a week of that one genre, and everyone wants a piece of the pie. At this point, everyone that never liked it is spinning it, labels that weren't into it start a sub-label dedicated to pushing that sound, it shows up in car commercials and movies..

then ten years later no one listens to it anymore, it's a 'niche' market, and the next big fad that's currently in the 2nd stage starts taking off..

I'm not quite sure i understand where you are getting at.
Are you trying to demonstrate that classical music affictionadoes are in it for something other than the music?

Believe it of not, a lot of the classical music fans actually go to concerts and are verry demanding on the performers.

Though they are known to be quite demanding when it comes to sound quality, i could argue that at this point, it is still about the music.

The hi-fi crowd doesn't specificaly listen to classical music.

I'm certain that yeah a large group of them are in it for the music.. but just as large a group of them are in it more for the dick-waving contest of having the *best* version and the *best* soundsystem to waggle around to everyone they know.

EVERY music scene has people that are in it because they love it, and EVERY music scene has it's share of people who are in it for the sake of showing everyone else just how much more awesome and more of a "real fan" they are.

buying a big system for classical is retarded.. Better to spend the money on real live shows.. nothing beats orchestras in well treated spaces
