Halifax police are investigating a rave that took place in the woods Saturday night, where officers encountered several disoriented young people who weren't dressed for the weather and an unresponsive woman who had to be transported out by sled before being taken to hospital.

The liquor enforcement unit, with the help of community response and patrol officers, tracked the rave two kilometres into the woods outside the city to an abandoned bunker at York Redoubt.

The lock to the bunker had been cut off, police said. There were about 120 young people in attendance.

Cops shut down the event and emergency crews were called to transport the unresponsive young woman to hospital.

"These events are concerning to police but more so in this case because of the remote location and the cold temperatures," police said in a release, adding access to the bunker was difficult, there was no first aid available and it appeared most in attendance planned to remain there until public transit started running the next morning.

"This serves as a reminder to parents to know where their kids are, who they are with and what they are doing."

The investigation continues.

A couple generators used to power a rave in the woods in Halifax filled the small venue with fumes to the point where police had to exit the building after breaking up the party.

About 120 young people attended the party at a bunker about 2 km into the woods at York Redoubt National Historic Site.

Const. Brian Palmeter said officers on scene came out of the bunker after a couple minutes and one officer was complaining of a headache.

The partygoers didn't report any symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning to police, Palmeter said.

“Once we showed up, they didn't want to stick around and talk to us,” he said.

One passed-out teenaged woman had to taken out of the woods by sled before being transported to hospital. Police said many of those in attendance weren't dressed for the cold weather.

The location was supposed to be secret. Partygoers were told to catch a specific bus to a meeting place. Police learned of those plans and then followed the partygoers' tracks in the snow to the small cement bunker.

Palmeter said the police investigation is ongoing.

Partygoers have been posting their thoughts about the rave on a Facebook group called “I Survived the Rave @ York Redoubt.”

Pictures were posted on the site and members of the group discussed the fallout. Some complained police left them out in the cold, while others were critical of the promoter. Some referred to the fact the fumes made some partygoers sick.

“Honestly though folks: we can take what good we can from this, but we did all get sent to a sketchy locale, with no heat, got shut down by the police, and paid money for it,² wrote one member. ³The first good rule is: if you see no security ¬ bad! The second is: if it's at a secret location ¬ bad!”

Others had no regrets about attending the event.

“We made it into the globe and mail guys!” boasted one member.

“Halifax will never see anything like that again,” wrote another member. “It was a life changing event lol. I had a blast!!”

Police say an unconscious teenager who had too much to drink had to be dragged by sled from a rave at a national historic site in Halifax.

The all-night dance party took place Saturday night at York Redoubt, in an abandoned bunker in the woods about two kilometres off the Purcells Cove Road.

Halifax Regional Police said there were about 120 partygoers at the rave, several of whom were "disoriented" and inadequately dressed for the cold weather.

One girl, believed to be 18, had too much alcohol and passed out, police said. Paramedics had to carry the unresponsive teen out of the woods by sled and rush her to hospital.

Police had found out about the rave and followed some of the individuals headed there and eventually shut down the party.

Police spokesman Const. Brian Palmeter said it's lucky that more people weren't hurt because exhaust from the generators brought in to power the party was blowing into the room.

"Certainly, there is the concern that had it not been shut down, ... people could have suffered the effects of the carbon monoxide," he said.

"Officers commented how overwhelming the exhaust fumes were and actually ended up calling Halifax regional fire and emergency service because of that, and because of the unresponsive female we found there. "

Palmeter said officers found the lock on the gate to the bunker had been cut off. There were signs of drug use inside, but no substances were seized, he said.

Ravers walked to site in 'treacherous conditions'

The police department's liquor enforcement unit, made up of patrol and community response officers, is investigating. Police have yet to decide whether to lay charges.

"Officers are looking at the organizers and promoters as they enticed people out to an area that was not only remote and dangerous, but they didn't provide any safe method of transportation to the actual location," said Palmeter.

Police found out in advance that a rave had been planned for another location, he said, but when it was cancelled, the ravers decided to go to York Redoubt. Some took Metro Transit buses to the site.

"We did then learn that this group was to meet at a specific place," Palmeter said. "Once we found that out, we were able to follow them out to this site and follow them through the woods to the bunker itself.

"What we observed is that the people on the bus, they would have exited the bus on Ferguson's Cove and Purcell's Cove Road area and would have had to travel the rest of the distance on foot."

He said a number of people arrived by car, but they also had to walk to the bunker.

"It would have been dark out, obviously treacherous conditions; ice and snow, especially going down the paths, down the cliffs. It makes it very dangerous," Palmeter said.

He urged parents to stay abreast of what their children are doing.
