I can't be the only one that's noticed.. Twilight, The Vampire Diaries.. To a slight extent True Blood (at least the 17 year old redhead isn't still going to highschool..)

Since when have Vampires been pedophiles? And since when is it so accepted?

Did I miss the memo? Edward Cullen, born in 1901, dating/fucking a high school girl? That Vampire Diaries show, that I just watched the first episode of, with a 200-ish year old vampire, going to high school and being obsessed with a girl that looks like his lost love from the 1700s?

I don't care that you look 17.. What the fuck are you vampires doing in fucking high school?! Is teenage pussy really the only kind you're able to get with all those fancy powers and that immortality?

And what the FUCK is up with all of them being fucking preppy, gap-shopping douchebags? I swear I keep expecting them to walk up to someone and be all like
Vampires becoming mainstream-cool is such a fucking insult to those of us that were ostracized and made fun of for liking vampires and horror movies.. much like how [
now">www.vgcats.com ] it's "cool" to be a "gamer"

christ I'm turning into a cranky old man. What the fuck.

Seriously though. Enough with the goddamn cradle-robbing pedophile vampires!
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

lol! in 'interview with a vampire' when they picked up kids, it was to suck their.. blood!

the real question here is, what's with all the lovey bullshit romance stuff?

vampires are supposed to be killers, amoral, night-fiends.. humans are food to them .. i don't fall in love with girls that remind me of poutine! (of course, if girl looks like poutine, i shouldn't even be talking to her :p )

i know that anne rice kinds turned the vamp idea very poetic, and even more romantic, but there was still alot of killing and struggling with the concept of becoming a murderous creature.. but even then, the nasty vamps were there too..

where's nosferatu when you need him? where are the mean ass 'blade' vampires?

you have to admit that in some traditions and interpretations, vampires have been high class, they dress well, they're snobby, and live well in big castles or whatever.. but in modern society, i'd see them as alot more trashy. rodriguez nailed the bad-ass trash vamp idea in 'from dusk till dawn'..

i hear ya' fred .. it's sad .. i think south park summed it well in 'the ungroundable' episode.

The whole romanticising of vampires was pretty much 100% Anne Rice's fault, though.. in the book Dracula, he's a monster.. Up untill Dracula was written, vampires/nosferatu were what we now refer to as Zombies; rotting, shambling undead automaton with no will, that drank the blood of the living.. Dracula was similar to an extent, but had more "human" qualities.. then Anne Rice came and turned them all into bisexual goths

It's just the shit that's coming out recently.. turns my stomach to see what they did.. At least they were still somewhat monsterous in the Anne Rice stuff.. some were ugly.. some (very few) didn't like what they had become (Louis, mostly)

now it's like they're all trying to be Louis; they don't want to eat from humans and they're "monsters" that shouldn't be 'alive'..

arghh..

We need to make a real vampire horror movie! Something weird and fucked up and straight out of the 80s!

I'm sorry to say but that's not true. I mean, the pedophile/bisexual thing, sure but the romantic vampire has existed even before Bram Stoker's time. One only has to check up on Polidori's The Vampyre or Le Fanu's Carmilla (both written before Stoker's book) and both are gothic/romantic. The Countess of Bathory was believed to be a vampire (especially in the 70s) and numerous poetry/books were made to both romanticize and demonize her.

The Vampire Lovers (1970) and Vampyres (1974) are also romantic movies. Even Bela Lugosi's Dracula movies in the 30s can be considered romantic gothic pieces.

So it's nothing new and it's nothing different (unless you go WAY back before the Victorian era in folklore tales; each region has their own version of the vampire).

The only difference now is that the stories are targetting girls aged 12-25. And vampires look like kids.
I'm feeling discordian right now..

you're right, Dr.N, but for me there's a difference between 'romantic' and 'soap-opera-drama-love-romance' ..

one is poetic, the other pathetic. one is art, the other is selling-out. (imo)

Another note that I don't believe anybody touched on: WHY DO VAMPIRES SPARKLE IN THE SUN!!!! I haven't actually seen twilight, but a friend of mine got dragged into seeing it with her cousin and informed me that when the vampires in this movie/book go out into the sun they don't burst into flames. Nope. They SPARKLE!!!!! Kill me.

''Edward, the romantic hero of the Twilight series, is a sweet, screwed-up high school kid, and at the beginning of his relationship with Bella, she is attracted to him because he is strange, beautiful, and seemingly repulsed by her. This exact scenario happened several times in my high school between straight girls and gay guys who either hadn't figured out they were gay or were still in the closet. Twilight's fantasy is that the gorgeous gay guy can be your boyfriend, and for the slightly awkward teenage girls who consume the books and movies, that's the clincher. Vampire fiction for young women is the equivalent of lesbian porn for men: Both create an atmosphere of sexual abandon that is nonthreatening. That's what everybody wants, isn't it? Sex that's dangerous and safe at the same time, risky but comfortable, gooey and violent but also traditional and loving. In the bedroom, we want to have one foot in the twenty-first century and another in the nineteenth''
