**Not in responce to any particular promoter or party. Feel free to comment/add to/modify the list, which are (or should be) pretty common sense**

1. If an event is promoted as a "Rave" it should have (at a minimum) a proper sound system and a dancefloor big enough to accomodate the number of attendees.

2. Make sure the lineup (especially out-of-towners) is 100% confirmed before selling advance tickets.

3. DJ's should be informed in advance what (if anything) they will be paid and should be paid on the night of the event, whether or not the party makes money.

4. Parties should only be held in reasonably safe venues. At large events, security and first aid should be made available.

5. If a party is cancelled or modified, refunds should be made available to those who have bought tickets in advance.

6. Unless informed otherwise in advance, the venue should be in a location accessible by public transportation (or a shuttle bus should be available).

7. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, take into account your resources, experience, and level of expertise when planning an event. If this is your first large rave, don't be overly ambitious. Most disasters seem to happen when promoters attempt to throw big, ambitious events without much experience, and quickly find themselves in way over their heads.

I can suggest also that the police and the fire departement should visit the venue
first of all, to be sure that the venue is legal

urgh do you have any idea how long the waiting list is to get a bloody inspector to a venue.... its unreasonably nutz

good idea for a thread though... itll be intresting to see everyone's take on what is a quality eventè

I'd also add,
9. make sure to ask the artists (djs, producers, vjs and otherwise) their material needs for the night and make sure that the setup is propper and that everything is going well during EACH set.

Yes, it's long but it worth the waiting
You don't have anybody at 3 am busting your party because
your venue is not safe

I've done 100% legit events (cegep parties). It's a whole lot more complicated and a bitch to get all permits than anyone knows... its not just about getting a fireman to drop by and thats it...

you need to submit the whole plan of the room (which includes all equipment, booth, speakers, lighting) with correct scaling
you need signatures, from the owner and the main oranizer (in case of any accident, the person signing as organizer gets the shit on his head)
in most cases, you need a certified security crew... that right there will set you back by a whole fucking lot (like... 15 maybe 20$ per hour for... say 12 hours... thats around 200$ per guy... if you take the cegep parties we were doing, with a total capacity of around 600 people we had to have 16 security agents.... 16!!!!!!!!!!!! thats around 3 grand innit?)

once you have an approval from le centre de prévention des incendies (yeah it takes what... 2 months to get them to move their ass to your place btw) then you have to get your permit at city hall...

the checklist is a whole lot longer than that... this is the stuff we had to do, off the top of my head, from 2 years back...

point is, the price of a security team alone will set you back so much that no... its not always worth it to be 100% legit when throwing an underground event.... not when people whine that 30$ at the door is too expensive for 100% legit with headliners, good sound and mad deco... up the quality of an event, you up the risk of getting busted and losing it all... make it legit, and risk not getting enough people to cover half your costs and eat mac'n'cheese for 6 fucking months...

why promoters cling to places like gravity, fractal, cyberloft, williams, theatre sans fil etc?... well considering you're getting a room without having to worry about all that shit... at a decent price... jeez, need i say more?

truth is, promoters, organise parties for fun, most everyone loses money doing so but in the end you tell yourself... well wtv that was fun... filling out papers, waiting at city hall, dealing with the fire department and then getting people whinning that the ticket costs too much and, in the end still lose a buttload of dough... that sure as hell aint my idea of fun!

Ok about the getting your venue inspected and stuff. I remember the process a few years ago. It involved the Fire Dept visiting the place about 5 times in one week by different inspectors. Then, 3 hours before the party starts, after they've scratched their nuts profusely, they can declare the building unsafe and you are SHIT OUT OF LUCK.

So yeah, so much for trying to get a secure space for a party.

I would like to add more stuff though :

10. for the love of God, promoters : if you plan on doing an event and which to get shitfaced beyond belief, * APPOINT OTHER PEOPLE OF TRUST TO TAKE CARE OF SHIT FOR YOU DURING THE PARTY ! *. How many times as a DJ was I faced with failing equipment, going to see the promoters and they're too fucked up to comprehend that only 1 speaker out of 6 is working and NO ONE IS DANCING ( or downright leaving ) do something to try and fix it. And make sure the people you appoint are *NOT* dumbfucks who know shit about anything and get frustrated that everyone keeps asking them questions. Throwing a party REQUIRES PLANNING, believe it or not.

sure that sucks, but isn't setting guidelines for a rebellion centered movement hypocritical?

if you're not happy with parties, throw your own... and do it properly.

Rule # 12 Promotors should stay away from djing and focus on their job. No one wants to hear you bust out your favorite Smashing Pumpkins record because you think it would "sound great right now" and you want to "mix it up a little". Leave the music to the djs and focus on getting the peeps there.
