Yeah. So picked up an economist the other day since I missed my train by 30 seconds (and the train comes once an hour). Ohhh my favorite magazine, how I missed you. Anyways, Im working my way thru it, and this article hit me. Its absolutly shocking. Somethings u;ll never forget, like the first chapter of Haunted by Chuck. Or this article. Heres the paragraph that got me.

Article: Atrocities beyond words

Context: Describing conflict in Congo where rape is used as a weapon of war

Excerpt: Most victims, as ever, are women and girls, some no more than toddlers, though men and boys have sometimes been targeted too. Local aid workers and UN reports tell of gang rapes, leaving victims with appalling physical and psychological injuries; rapes committed in front of families or whole communities; male relatives forced at gunpoint to rape their own daughters, mothers or sisters; women used as sex slaves forced to eat excrement or the flesh of murdered relatives. Some women victims have themselves been murdered by bullets fired from a gun barrel shoved into their vaginas. Some men, says a workr for the UN's Children Fund (Unicef), have been forced to simulate having sex in holes dug in the ground, with razor blads stuck inside.

So picked up an economist the other day since I missed my train by 30 seconds [...]. Ohhh my favorite magazine, how I missed you.

you're saying that like it's .... ironic n shit, right?
Update » moohk wrote on Fri May 9, 2008 @ 5:50am
....like... ironic , like not in the 'alanis-morissette-unfortunate-song-to-make-a-come-back-to-in-its-ironic-lack-of-irony' sense, right? like - you mean the vomit coming up, wuz like, cuz like, you were reading the economist. right? an you don't really miss it, and you won't pick it up any time soon, so you can avoid , like, feeling nauseous .. n shit.. right?
Update » moohk wrote on Fri May 9, 2008 @ 6:11am
ironic, like : [ stuffwhitepeoplelike.wordpress.com ] ...
Update » moohk wrote on Fri May 9, 2008 @ 6:40am
yeah, irony .. for sure that's what you meant, right? and like, not giving a real citation for the source [ www.economist.com ] was , like, your statement that you don't consider this 'real' news, right? cuz like... a few things about this are making me feel sick, too... i mean .. like ... the heavily pro-gobalization editorial stance of the economist, so blatantly assumed so as to forgo what i think are pretty basic qualities necessary in using a term such as (responsible) journalism - oh yeah!!.. i think the newspeak for this particular type of propaganda is 'advocay journalism', (a genre of journalism that intentionally and 'transparently' adopts a non-objective viewpoint, usually for some social or political purpose), ergo somehow it is acceptable to say 'news' when referring to colonialist rheotoric/advertisement ...
Update » moohk wrote on Fri May 9, 2008 @ 7:06am
... come to think to think of it ... so much damn hypocrisy, not only in the media coverage, but also in western foreign policy, which also dictates to a certain extent the way we look at issues (...or don't look at them, therefore perfectly - and strategically, of course - absconding genuine altruism and responsibility). oh, if only the haziness (to put it lightly) of the West's 'free press' were ironic, if even it were a little bit funny-haha, and not such a painfully distressing, depressing disappointment, with such violently dire consequences...

I get the Economist in the mail every week. It's a good magazine. It covers world economy and politics.

It's nothing new in Africa...

from the wiki page on the economist

Criticism
The Socialist Party (UK) described it as "a mouthpiece of international financial capital". Economist James K. Galbraith said the publication follows a pro-globalisation agenda. The Guardian has described it as neo-liberal. James Fallows argued that the newspaper suffers from British class snobbery, pretentiousness, and simplistic argumentation -- and that the editorial line is often contradicted by actual news stories. Andrew Sullivan complained that it uses “marketing genius” to make up for deficiencies in analysis and original reporting, resulting in a “a kind of Reader's Digest for the upper classes.”

In addition, Newsweek editor Jon Meacham remarked that "The Economist doesn’t even attempt to do original reporting." Elsewhere, the "newspaper" is said to have an “omniscient tone and pedantry." Editorial anonymity, said by the editor to reflect “a collaborative effort,” is said to hide the youth and inexperience of those writing articles. "The magazine is written by young people pretending to be old people," according to Michael Lewis. “If American readers got a look at the pimply complexions of their economic gurus, they would cancel their subscriptions in droves."

those things happen a lot in civil wars.
it makes me sad and angry, feeling powerless to stop such things.
If I had godlike powers I'd kill all of them rapists. (and maybe victims too, to make them be at peace.)

really. survivors of such atrocities are broken, traumatized for life.
sometimes, I wonder if they'd be better dead.

When i went to college I knew this girl that was from Rwanda, she got the whole female castration thing done...
..dont know how she did it...she saw her mother die in front of her eyes, getting killed by the 'military'...she was here on refugee status or something...
...you dont know what to say when you hear someone telling you shit like that...

It's true that it represents globalisation and free financial markets but then again, it is called the Economist. duh.
Even then, if you read the articles, each author doesn't necessarily abide by that editorial stance.
The Economist first publication is in 1843, during the Victorian times.

Of course, one can't just get information from one source only. It's good to check others like BBC, Guardian, The Independent, Reporters without Borders, etc... The great thing about the Economist, unlike other weekly news magazine, is the amount of articles and information they stuff in there per week. They also do special features, that is a lot of information to process in one week. In addition they cover the entire world... unlike local and national media.

Aerial: sigh... you can't prejudiced the victims of violent crimes like that. Death is not a solution to those that suffers. Humans are resilient. Compassionate murder because they are victims of a crime is as bad as the original violent crime.

infibulation and clitoris ablation should be considered as a crime against humanity if you want my opinion. i know it's other cultures and blablabla but it's pretty extreme to think that women accomplish that shit to other girls in a man power society. i think it is the ultimate rape to take from someone the right to have natural sexuality.

can you believe in some country/region it is more than 90% of female who has had infibulation or clitoris ablation..or both!

this is where you can find the best acurate/recent facts about that subject: [ asiapacific.amnesty.org ]

toute race confondues la femme est encore l'entite avec le moin de droit partout sur la planete. nothing new here.

but i'm sure majority of these women prefer to live as to die. human survived on resilience. i don't know if it's a sad thing.

but rape during civil war time are very different from the infibulation and excision phenomene. it's from different motives but have the same kind of result.

I knew this girl that was from Rwanda, she got the whole female castration thing done...

are you sure she was from rwanda? it is not at all a country where this is happening.

it's cool you made me remember that for a while when i was living at my first place in mtl i had a new neighbor from rwanda. he had the same age as me(16) and he just has arrived in quebec. i brought him in the center of the city and have really deep conversations with him. he saw as well his family got killed and he had to fake being dead to get trought the ordeal.

rwanda is a very complexe subject. it was once a society with some order and modernity for an african country.. sadly this place is a fucking mess and seems damned like all the territories colonized by europe country/monarchy.(belgium in that case). there are frequent report of this happening in western country as well.

it's rainy and hazy today and that thread fucking depress me.
