This raises the question about which animals are actually self aware and just don't have the means to express themselves because they lack opposable thumbs or trunks to write with.

It's a cool trick, but I don't think it's so much the elephant being self aware as it is an elephant that was beaten and tortured untill it memorised how to do what it's trainer was teaching it to do.

It's highly unlikely that what we're seeing here is just the result of behavioral conditioning. Elephants are highly advanced social creatures and studies have shown that they even bury their dead. It's no surprise they're considered holy in certain cultures.

Well I wouldnt call National Geographic my bible but I pretty much trust everything I've read in this magazine so far, and this month's issue lists the elephant as one of the few self-aware animals besides primates and dolphins.

Phoenix: don't forget that being considered holy doesn't equate an animal with being highly advanced socialy: Hindus consider a very wide range of animals as holy. Some of them even pay their respects to cockroaches.

Is this is true, I'm amazed to see that elephants have spacial awareness too, therefore understanding legs the farthest from the viewpoint are factually " behind " and this elephant paints them accordingly.

Shit, even *I* can't draw an elephant this good.

Personally, why anyone would harm such beautiful creatures is beyond me.
I'm feeling in the past but right now..

theres a few videos of different elephants all drawing pretty much the exact same thing.. im with phoenix on this one.. behavioural conditioning. If you read on a bit more basically these are elephants that used to be part in the now defunct logging industry there and this is pretty much the only way their owners can afford their up-keep.

not sure if you noticed the trainer on the far side of the elephant out of view from the camera on most of the videos holding on to his tusk guiding it...

That last video, like everything on [ rathergood.com ] was made by children on crack and is actually pretty stupid.

And I do think elephants can paint without conditioning, and I am willing to believe they're that intelligent. Why does everyone get cynical the minute animals show signs of potential intelligence?
