So...I find it doable to go between most genres, but I find it especially hard to go between breaks/dubstep/somehouse etc. and the faster dnb tempo, I suppose there are a few older style dnb influenced breaks tracks that kind of work, but are still generally slower than most dnb. The hiphop wax I have seems to go with either genre, but not both. So I`m wondering how most of you go between the two speeds with it still sounding natural? Do you work your whole set towards this transition? Because I think I would rather just drop a dnb track in at 33 and speed it up to 45....Anyways, my current life goal is to mix everything into everything else in my bag, or laundry basket rather, so let me know how its worked for you, thanks. =)
I'm feeling vonnegut love right now..

well the speed diffrences are pretty major, so the best bet is to find a track with a long breakdown with no beats, and another track with a long/beatless intro (by beatless I mean no drums, just synths)

the other alternative is to find tracks that alternate tempos temporarily.. Like K-Step - Check My Style, Diesel Boy - Barrier Break, Pendulum - Painkiller (Ed Solo and someone else that I can't remember remix)

The problem with that is that you've got to be quick as hell on the mix, because those change of tempo tracks tend to not last too long.

You could also use a CDJ 800-1000, set it to master tempo and up the speed yourself by setting it to a wider pitch range.. That usually works best for speeding up though; slowing down will end up sounding like digital machine noise and you end up losing a lot of bass (though the effect does sound cool)

you could also do your own transition-edits in Ableton; take a track you like and do an edit of it so that it speeds up/slows down to whatever BPM range you want to get to.. might take a bit of editing but it can be done.. you could even make your own little mashups like that.
I'm feeling fuckin' crazy right now..

yeah... bpm changes in a set... well... the way id go at it is backspin, flip off everyone listening and start the other track... from the first kick or beat

not a fan of major alterations to bpms... with master tempo, itll just sound crap and without... well... no one like chimpmunks
I'm feeling jus mauve! right now..

Well ya the way i usually do it is like screwhead first said
its during the breakdown!Even it would suck to do it to often
its usually the smoothest transition because even if u speed
the breakbeat track up or the dubstep track down the bass will
sound awkward and like wally says not everybody likes chipmunks
exept the happy hardcore crowd!
I'm feeling family guy right now..

progression is always a smooth bet.
dnb is usually around 174 bpm and nu school breaks range from 120 to around 138.
but these bpm's are not set in stone and there is acctually alot of music that falls in between.
so keep diggin'.
another approach if your colection enables you to easily go from hip hop to breaks would be to mix a hip hop tune into the dnb by "half timing" the beats and work you're tempo back up to the nu breaks.
somebody posted this tutorial awhile back and i always thought it was cool as well.
play your dnb at 33 and when the break down hits power down both turntables and start speeding up the dnb tune with your finger.
when its around the right tempo flick it back on and press play.
takes a little practice and you gotta have the perfect tunes.
but it'll feel really cool if ya nail it perfect cuz then you can stomp around your house going... "I AM THE CONTROLLER OF TEMPO!!!! BOW TO ME FUTILE FELINE!!!"
then you pick up your cat and shove your face into her belly while making monster noises untill she scratches you... then you go back in your room, try it again, fuck it up, turn off your decks and post a bunch stupid shit on the internet.
I'm feeling republican right now..
