so i'm been doin' some sorting and am trying to figure out the bast method...
i've done this many times before and it always seems to end up in chaos.
i'm not talkin' about aranging a bag, but a whole colection.
genres are obvious...
but then it breaks down into sub genres, stuff that gets frequently played, labels, promo's and boots...
and then you gotta make it all convienent to you shelf space and bins...
its over whelming me.
can any of you super meticulous guys give me some tips?
I'm feeling republican right now..

just go by genres and go thru every single record everytime you go out. Been doing that since forever and it's not that complicated if you know every record just by looking at them a fraction of a second
I'm feeling happy right now..

By label and catalogue number. Sub Labels go on the same shelf as mother labels. All white labels ,acetate, unreleased bootlegs all go seperate even if i know what label they are from. I add labels on the shelves and know my collection like the back of my hand at this point, so when i need to fill my maxis it doesnt take too much time to get the stuff i want. I need more shelves though lol. I'm pretty damn meticulous, because as most tell me..im a fucking nutbag to have as much wax as i do.

Cd's are easy..just code your binders and add the code in a program like i tunes to the track and such. Enter the track name get the code and bam...you have a cd in 2 seconds instead of flipping.
I'm feeling no mo planes plz right now..

biggest categories are by genre
within the genre they are sorted by label and catalog number

I have like 1200 records but I can find ANY track within 10 seconds thanks to this (then again, I know what label each track is on and I know catalog numbers by heart for 75% of them).

So yeah, label and catalog number.

Mine are organized first by genre, then within dnb and hardcore (my main 2) I have them split between oldschool, dark, and light. Then after that they're all put in order by cat no.
I'm feeling awesome right now..

@ clown, thats not what i meant. Have you ever seen an international guest dj on his laptop but is still mixing with records and cd's? They aren't looking at [ bangbros.com ] but finding their music. ;) You buy an mp3 or wav, put a code in the song title like 12 A for example...while you are playing your gig you enter the name of the track in the search it pops up with 12a..go to the slot in your binder and voila, instant cd. No one is asking for you to mix with your pc, because people who do that shouldnt get paid. Now ifyou don't have a laptop, then well errrr get one. They can be a dj's best friend from recording, keeping track of tracklistings, finding your shit and never underestimate the power of midi loops. It can help make a decent set into a great one just by adding a lil something something.

This is what Im planning on doing over the holidys.

1st I devide my records in 3 categories: Stuff I will still play out, stuff I wont but still want, and stuff to sell or pack away in a box.

Then I take the stuff I will play out and I break that into 2 categories. Stuff for Dance floors, stuff for lounges

Then I take each of those categories and break them up according to genre. Within each genre category, I order them according to preffernce. Also, I try not to make too many genre categories.

exe:
Party Tracks / Minimal / New Electro / Old Electro / Tech-House / Techno / Breaks / Chill-Ninja Tunes

i use categories too, and by label/artist

and/or i but a routine in order.

lets say you have 2 remixes of the same track, put them both one next to another, even if catalogue # arent following, because when you wanna play the track you will see the other and can start beatjuggling and cutting with the remix.
I'm feeling hardcore right now..
