Une autre acception est qu'aux jours des solstices, le point de l'horizon où le soleil se lève ou se couche arrête de progresser vers le nord et repart en sens inverse. Juste après le coucher du Soleil, le 21 décembre de l'an 2007, on peut observer la Lune dans les Pléiades occulter les deux étoiles les plus brillantes de l'amas, Alcyone et Maya. L'occultation d'Alcyone est presque rasante vers 16 h 27.
