I am appalled that Dischordianism, Jedi, Worshipers of Glycon, Dagon, Cthulhu and Nyarlathotep are not in the list of religions in the profile settings.

I am very upset! My choice of belief is being discriminated against!

I'll go burn a bible/drown a Qur'an in alcohol/cook the Torah in bacon grease in protest.
I'm feeling yan nyeh pahnima'yu right now..

Don't forget to dress up as pirates to fight global warming!

N'ah, I agree, they should put "cultist" as an option in the religion settings.

It's a belief, rather than a religion.
(waits for someone to jump in with the "black is the absence of color, not a color" argument)

science and logic aren't 'belief' systems.

"science and logic aren't 'belief' systems."

I disagree.
Update » aLxzRed wrote on Tue Apr 24, 2007 @ 9:44am
And no I don't have a logical argument to back that up.
Update » aLxzRed wrote on Tue Apr 24, 2007 @ 9:49am
Actually, I do...
Science goes by the belief that everything in the universe is measurable and provable.

That's not a belief.

1. something believed; an opinion or conviction: a belief that the earth is flat.
2. confidence in the truth or existence of something not immediately susceptible to rigorous proof: a statement unworthy of belief.
3. confidence; faith; trust: a child's belief in his parents.
4. a religious tenet or tenets; religious creed or faith: the Christian belief.

To contradict science is to contradict logic. Since everything in our universe can be explained through logical analysis there is no need for belief or faith. Science is an absolute.

That is the least logical argument I've ever heard.
Prove to me that everything is logically explicable.

That is my point exactly, that science "believes" that everything is explicable, I have yet to see the proof of that. If you have this proof, please, share it with the rest of us.

far from that... most scientists know it's not necessarily true, and unless you manage to prove it logically, there won't be any means to know whether or not it's true before actually explaining everything "through logical analysis" (and even as a scientific researcher, i think and i hope that this won't happen)

In order to 'prove' anything to you I will then employ a series of LOGICAL arguments. Who the fuck can I prove something without using the logic. It's not possible.

Disregarding logic is proof in itself that you're wrong.

If there is anything in the universe that isn't provable through logical analysis, then science is entirely flawed and should be rejected as a proper means for discovery.

Logic is the only means for discovery. We use tools like deduction and analysis, which are all based on logic.

..

I can't believe i'm actually having to defend concepts like logic.

So you believe, without any proof that everything is provable?

And that if science can't find the ultimate truth it is useless?

Sounds like you've found your religion ;)

morality, ethics, how to live a good life, whether a political system we live in is just or not.

all of these things science has nothing to say about, not exactly small things if you ask me...
I'm feeling surly right now..

you'd have to be insane to think there's no science behind morality or ethics. evolution formed all of these things and there are very obvious reasons why we think things like murder is "wrong".
