I know because I've worked in it but it's much different to work at a big place like ubisoft than to work at a place like A2M. Not every company is the same.

And Ubisoft is slavery, how?
Update » DCRn wrote on Fri Mar 16, 2007 @ 12:53pm
I mean, unless you worked as tester for a big project with 200+ of your peers and no renewal. That, I can understand.
I'm feeling besorgt right now..

Obviously you never worked there... They make you work 80 hour a week in crunch period and they pay you pennies.
Update » moondancer wrote on Fri Mar 16, 2007 @ 12:57pm
and yes i have, plus everyone has to eventually work on the big projects unless they're really lucky so.

Obviously?

I worked at Ubisoft. I saw no slavery. No one forces you to work there. I've worked 60+ hours a week. To call it slavery... fuck, you could work at McDonalds, you know. Ubi feeds you and rewards you for your work.

I'm at Gameloft right now, working very comfortably in BREW validation. Shindy above is a QA Specialist for the same company. 90% of my friends' list here work either at Ubisoft, Gameloft and Babel. Though the last of the three is a bit shady at times, by no means is it "slavery".

Even if, I mean I know it sucks when they don't keep you at the end of the project but it is way better than flipping burgers. And you still got the experience to put on your CV.

And it,s fun just to be part of something as rewarding as a video game. I mean, your job is to create or help create something that thousand of people will buy and like.
Update » Shindy wrote on Fri Mar 16, 2007 @ 12:59pm
And I worked at Ubisoft too, and the overtime is payed so no slavery there either !
Update » Shindy wrote on Fri Mar 16, 2007 @ 1:03pm
and you are above minimum wage even as a tester...

Well your opinion varies from everyone else I knew at Ubisoft, that's all I can say. You can't compare it to McDonalds because no one cares about their job at McDonbalds and that's why you can't be exploited. To say you have the choice at Ubi is kind of subjective.. you have the choice if you don't wanna keep your job that's all. But everyone wants very badly to keep their job for the reasons Shindy said.

You start at a measely 9$ an hour and your raise goes by hours so that you don't get one until after over a year and it's for 25 cents or something ridiculous like that.. even EA pays 10$.

People will always b**ch about there job because they don't want to do the little more that would make them stand out from the rest or they are to scared to take the action that would change something.

I belive that if you really love what you do, you will go the extra milles.

And starting at Ubisoft is a great way to learn about all the different job in this industry and to get the experience needed to go further, even if it is in another compagnie afterwards.
Update » Shindy wrote on Fri Mar 16, 2007 @ 1:10pm
maybe a tester salary is not high, but there is not any education needed for the job... that's the way it works. The more education you have, the greater the pay will get... It's a place to start.

Ubi is like every other company. And My opinion is shared by as many people. I know tons who've started as testers and now run the Montreal Studio. I have friends who've gone from nothing to level designers, console specialists and so forth in a matter of a year, give or take a few months.

Now, if you go it to test and expect to get rich or make a career as a "tester", of COURSE you'll hate it.

When I started in the field, I had worked for years as a retail salesperson. And you know, I fucking enjoyed every minute I was with Ubisoft and now, well, Gameloft is definitely the place for me to be.

Sorry, A2M guy! We're moving the topic away from its intended subject! Seems like a fun company... what's the productivity like?

I've only seen some of you company's games (the Scooby Doo ones) and I'm sorry that I have to write this, they were at the bargain bin at Radio Shack (before it became The Source by Circuit City). That scares me a bit.

I have a friend with talent and he's searching for a place. So far in Montreal we have Ubi, Gameloft, Babel, EA, Eidos, Bug Tracker and you.
I'm feeling besorgt right now..

I'm not saying it's okay. I'm saying that child labour in 3rd world countries is better than no labour in 3rd world countries. Slave labour doesn't even exist as far as I'm concerned.
