that's actually some pretty bad reasoning..

saying that people would know that someone just thought him up is pretty rediculous.. the bible was writen a LONG time ago, when people were stupid. they thought the world was flat, they thought the sky was filled with water, they thought they were the center of the universe, they thought god created the world in 7 days...

the raelians are a very new religion (and don't call it a cult, cause the ONLY difference between a religion and a cult is size, nothing else)

chrisitianity has had a long time to establish itself.. that's the only reason it's as stable as it is..

thing is, no one really knows when exactly the bible was write, or even by whom is was writen by.. sure you could go by the names they give "mathew mark luke and john".. blah blah blah, but how do you really know it wasn't writen by a very smart con artist who knew how to tell a good story and needed cash at the time..?

people were dumb back then and they'd believe just about anything you told em.. and keep in mind even according to the bible itself, it was writen at least 30 years after 'jesus' had died.. that's nearly a lifetime for people back then, coming up with a crazy story like that wouldn't be that hard..

Religion was created to control people, plain and simple. ALL of theme were (or ARE, in the case of new, modern religions [raelians, scientolofy, etc..]) created for the same purpose: To get people thinking a certain way so as to make it easier to 1) establish an "ideal" society and 2) to place more power and importance in the hands of the people who lead the whole thing.

Now, if we take the odd chance that, there IS a god, and that the biblical religions got it right, then:
God demands human sacrifice of your first born son or daughter in the form of an immolation preformed on the valey of Ben Hinom, or else you don't love him because you have more attatchment to flesh and blood than the spirituality of the "one true father". (Read Isaah, it's all about that in the begining)
God is also DAMN intolerant. The WHOLE old testament, you do something he doesn't like, *WHAM* your dead.
Adultery (Leviticus 20:10)
masturbation (Genesis 38: 8-10)
child abuse/murder (Genesis 22:9-10. Also, in Leviticus 20:9, it says if you ever talk bad about your father or mother, you're to be put to death. You ever say, even as a joke, that you hate either or? YOUR GOING TO HELL!)
I'll also mention again that JESUS HIMSELF was saying you should hate your family if you love god in Luke 14:26. (Jesus speaking) "If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple."

But you know what? I could easily go on about this for a long time. I could bring up many, MANY instances where the bible says to do things that are utterly dissgusting (how about King Solomon and a woman preforming canibalism on a child? II Kings 6:28,29)
But none of that will matter to you, because you've already been brainwashed to believe whatever interpretation someone gave you of what god means, because that's all religions are: INTERPRETATIONS of the bible, and not following it to the letter, because if you WERE following what the BIBLE says, and not what people TELL YOU it says, then you would be killing babies. You would be out killing people who cut their hair or shave their beards. You would also, ironically enough, be killing everyonw who doesn't have dreads, because acording to Leviticus, you aren't alowed to cut your hair or groom it, you must let it grow and lock naturally to form a mane like that of a lion upon your head. If not, you don't love god and you die.

If you don't follow EVERYTHING the bible tells you to do, in the EXACT way it tells you to, then you don't love god. You are doing what a fellow man has told you to do. And you, my friend, are going to hell, because humans should not be interpreting god's word, they should be following it.

there are people who say that you should read the new testimate instead of the old testimate because of all the blood and guts in it.

thing is.. the new testimate was writen way after.. and cannot be taken as the "word of god" as so many people like to say the bible is.

which is actually pretty funny, since the bible was never writen by god.. it was writen by a bunch of people.. heh, the bible is the word of "john".. sounds much nicer don't you think? question is.. who is this john guy? and how can we trust what he says?

how many people do research into a subject they wanna learn more about, by reading one and only one book on the subject? NEVER.. that's called bad research.

so how can religions do that?

Translation errors, hell, entire missing chapters! I seem to recal that the book that jews read (can't remember the name) has a whole lot before Genesis talking about Adam's first wife, Lilith, and how she was made to be his equal, but got banished because she wouldn' submit to Adam's will and questioned god's decisions. Then god made Eve, from a part of his most obedient creation.

alright just to clear up some misconceptions about the bible..

1. the books of the old testament were compiled and edited around 1000-400 BC, most likely by the scholarly and priestly class of the Israelites as a means to unite the people by establishing worship of one deity, Yahweh, and to justify the divine rule of the king

2. some of the old testament describes history that is known to be true because we have archeoligical evidence of writings from neighboring people (ex Assyrians, Babylonians, etc) which contain similar events

So basically I'm not saying that because the Bible says there is god means its true, but to understand the bible you have to view it in its context, which is like Spooky said, a means to unify, strengthen, and establish control over the Israelites both pre and post exile

ok...
the word of God isnt IN the bible... like Ian said, its the word of John, not God...
I believe in God, I say that I'm christian, but I read the bible from cover to cover, and i drew from it my own understanding... seeing as humans wrote the bible, you cannot expect to extract from it very exact representations of what God wants us to do... and seeing as the New Testament is the one that 'founded' christianity, i put more emphasis on the treachings of Jesus than those set forth in the old testament, the "bloody" trestament... my belief in a higher being comes from my own experiences, not just because the bible exists... i just happen to agree on some fundamental points, with many other human beings

that's another thing, people who say the bible teaches good morals..

sure it might have a lot of good ideas, but it's also filled with lots of shit that's very wrong.

this is shown by the churches fucked up stances on things like homosexuality or abortion..

though i do agree the bible has some good morals in it, i think that there is no need for a book to tell you what is right and wrong.. we can all come to our own conclusions and morals..

taking any other human being's words as gospel is never a good idea... theyre human like you and me... how are they any more right than you?
come to yur own conclusions taking into account what others have said, like what i did...
i believe in God, others believe in religion too, if they believe because of brainwashing, then i agre with spooky and ian, if they have come to their own conclusions which coincide with already existing points of view, (like myself) then theyre fine

well you should narrow you're specifications..

a religious institution that causes hate and death, and run by idiots..

it doesn't matter so much that there are idiots running the religion, it has to do with the after effects..
