WASHINGTON - Leah Fyten believes every family on her South Dakota reservation has been affected by methamphetamine use. The drug has torn apart these families, led to increases in crime and bumped mortality rates. And now, the director of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Housing Authority says, it's affecting the reservation's already desperate housing situation.

That's really sad...

I think people who deal meth should be shot on site, the damage it causes is insane.

Only a translation of the problem. Whats the saddest, you choose: meth, gasoline, glue, or alcohol ?

yeah ! that's really sad ! the native is a real complex question...what you can do when you have no future in the reserve : you drink and do drugs...

my dad is a social worker..few years ago he brought back a bunch of kids from the north...and when i say kids it's like 9 years old...they were all intoxicated because they snifed gaz...they don't even have th effective for the problem there...i hope it's have changed but i doubt it !

i think this is our little quiet canadian/quebecois genocide...that's why i laugh when i hear french quebecer says : give us back our country.....first maybe we should think to give a country at the native !

Yeah the natives really got screwed... Alcholism/drug addiction, poverty, and crime are the legacy they were left with by the Canadian government.

I find it appaling the way the Government looks the other way when it comes to the natives, and at the same time encouraging tons of immigration from other places.

i went to my first pow wow ever at the Pine Ridge reservation, SD home of the Oglala Sioux nation, near Wounded Knee
. I mus have been 12 or 13.
and i tell you tears were literally streaming down my cheek
as the MC announced the Grand Entry and the drums were hitting
it was ever sooo moving
and we can hear and feel the struggle, the will to live, the power in the people, the sadness
First Nations communities have been struggling forever man
it never was easy but damn did it ever get funky with reservations
and all the madness that happened like disease, wars, deceit and such
sure we gain greatly from "globalization"
but the price that was paid and being paid is ever so hard
but that's the struggle. it's just +that+ much harder for someone
"aboriginal" to make it in life
extra barriers. perceptual barriers. societal barriers. institutionalized low self-sesteem
however we stand on the edge of being able to prove ourselves on many levels
and the best that can be done is on an individual level
where we learn to work for a higher purpose eg. our community, and humanity itself
but it's also so easy to succumb to the devil's weaknesses that plague humanities vulnerable

i really liked to read your experience madeskimo.

for sure the poverty don't help but i think it's more than just that for what is the native question.

in that case , how to explain 65,4 suicides / 100 000 people in the Nunavik ?
in the rest of the quebec it's an average ~ 20 / 100 000....everywhere you have a native population the level of suicide is increase! mtl have alot of poor area and it's 15 suicides ?/ 100 000 people .

yeah and keep in mind the suicide rate in Quebec is REALLY HIGH overall compared to most places, so it's that much worse when you compare the overall Quebec average to the Native average.

Somehow it makes me think that it's the white people's way of paying back for the country they took away from the red people *no taxes*. Can you smell the tension? Quite soon, the remaining natives will make one last attempt to take back their sacred land, and after that they'll go home. I'm sure it must be depressing to know that your culture is almost dead and *cough*consists of rude mannered alcoholics*

although, to be fair, if i was walking down the street, i think i;d rather slip and fall on a rotten dead cat than in a puddle of toluene.
