saw the premiere of this remake last night and i was totally blown away. its disgusting, depraved, chaotic and chock-full of gore.
it opens with a taste of the pure brutality that is to follow then snatches it away and ramps up the suspense like crazy for about 40 minutes or so. i did my fair share of squirming throughout the flick. theres enough character development to make the viewers see who the protagonists are and who the antagonists are but its mercifully short on the lame melodrama.
the music score was done by tomandandy, whoever they are, and they did a great job. the music is reminiscent of late-70's, early 80's B-movie horror classics and really helps build the mood.
there are already alot of bad reviews out there for this, and theyre typical in their bogus intellectual takes on things. such as:

"Still, why, one wonders, does Craven's quite craven original film—made for nothing, tasteless as hell, and out for a few bucks—get to be read as a Zeitgeisty signification of subconscious cultural stress, while its go-for-broke remake, even more dedicated to its own mercenary greed and ardor for suffering, does not? Or will a next-generation theorist find signification in Aja's mess, perhaps even a Gallic assault on American conservatism and hubris?"
excerpt from by Michael Atkinson's review in the village voice

"...Zeitgeisty signification of subconscious cultural stress".......ugh.... what a pompous pretentious dicktree. its a goddam slasher/gore flick, stop reading into it as if it was tolstoy's war and peace. i wanted a movie that was gonna make my palms sweat and make me cringe in my chair, and show me alot of fucked up scenes full of gore and humanity's capacity for brutality. it delivered in full.
i havent seen the original, mind you, which is supposed to be a cult classic along with dawn of the dead etc.., but i intend to now. apparently this new one is very close to the orignal, which is good i think. i'm still not sure if i'm in favour of this new remake craze or not, but this movie was damn good for what it was. incidentally, they showed a preview of another remake that will come out in june of this year, and it is none other than 1976's The Omen. I think theyre doing a remake of the orignal friday the 13th too, as i saw in another thread somewhere on this board; whether either of these will deliver remains to be seen i guess.......anyways, if youre a gore-addict, this one's for you.

Morphine... you might want to read up on Wes Craven before talking about bogus-intellectual reviews, considering he was a university professor before his film career took flight. The original Hills Have Eyes is, however, the only film of his that's even remotely interesting... watch for a torn Jaws movie poster in the original film (and then watch for a torn Hills Have Eyes poster in the cellar sequence of The Evil Dead)...

btw - the guy with the weird head is Michael Berryman... who was born with 26 different birth defects (as I recall from interview footage)... and is surprisingly well spoken when he's not playing mutants in film.
