Personally, I've owned both and think Traktor is the absolute bomb! But I guess it really depends on what you wana do, I'm addicted to sampling, looping and using a lot of fx, I also use a midi controller, so Traktor is my total choice. If you wana emulate being a vinyl dj, and want to keep things simple, Serato is gets the job done.

of you JUST want to use MP3s with turntables or CDJs, Serato is the best there is - it's light on resources and fast as hell.

If you want to do all sorts of fancy stuff and have effects, Traktor is the way to go, but because of that (and all the other features like the beat-grid) it's more CPU intensive, which means there's more than can go wrong when you're runnin Traktor than when you're running Serato.
I'm feeling like a drama magnet right now..

Totally agree with nick on this one... Serato is a very dope software for turntablists and in general people who want almost perfect vinyl emulation... Theyre also releasing a 24bit version soon so id imagine the dac quality will go up quite a bit.

Traktor is great with midi contolers and alot of innovative and intuitive features that push the boundries of djing...

Torq is pure rubbish
I'm feeling forward every thurs right now..

What about Deckadance? One of my friend always use it and it's pretty much in the perspective of Traktor (pushing back the DJing boundaries) liiiiike... using VSTis in it?

well.. I just got Traaktor Scratch Pro on Saturday so I am reading this thread with great interest - hehe. basically the reason why I got this instead of trying to get 24-bit Serato was the cost

at Long & McQuade Native INstruments is offering Traktor Pro for 50 percent off.. so it came to 372 bucks after tax. The Serato was either 650 for the old version plus tax, or 770 plus tax for the new 24 bit one

soo.. as a vinyl dj I do want good vinyl emulation - I hope this will be ok. I'll just have to make the best of what I've got. I only just set it up and styill dont really know much about it. I did notice that it kinda glitched out on me a couple times and made little skipppy glitchy noises when I was using the timecoded records.. makes me uneasy. hopefully it's something I can fix and maybe I just dont have it calibrated properly..latency wise

I'd hate to be out at a gig and have it do that. I'm using a Gateway NV54 laptop - it's specs are:

500 GB HDD - says i have 313 GB free of 433 GB
4 GB memory
intel pentium processor - T4300

I know pretty much fuck-all about computers.. do you guys think that will be good to run Traktor? or are the glitches maybe caused by it not having enuff power?

oh and what are these things that Traktor does that push the boundaries of DJing? is it stuf I can do or do i need to go and buy some controller or other gear to utilize them? this is all very very new to me. and do you think the vinyl emulation is adequate for me to rely on it for a gig?

thx!

Serato is not just for vinyl emulation. It is completely midi mappable, and with the most recent software upgrades it makes sampling that much easier. Multiple cue points can be set and saved on an track, and you can create a huge sample bank. Looping is super simple in serato.
Never really used traktor, but these common misconceptions that serato is just for emulation is absolute bunk. And the new sl3 no longer requires you to use as many channels on the mixer

Serato has never crashed my computer, whereas tractor I've seen friends have to do multiple re-boots during sets.

yikes. see that would be a disaster. it makes me nervous that I've had it skip and glitch on me using the timecoded vinyl already a few times. I dont want it to glitch at all - if it does that when I am trying to mix at a gig or it crashes it defeats the purpose. it's supposed to be convenient..

would love to hear more about this and see. hopefully since I've only just hooked it up last night and not read much of the maunal, maybe i had the settings wrong and it can be improved and stop any glitch. if not, maybe I should return it and get Serato instead if this is gonna be an ongoing issue

true true and also true...lol

but for trackter they now came up with the control x1 for the midi sampling, cues, effects and all..

u can now also get the dicer fromn novation that was made for serato but now has a complete mapping on the net for trackter... wich will bring ur traktor to about the same level of serato...minus the sound quality....

.... my 2 cents
I'm feeling freaking bored right now..

of course it's not just for vinyl emulation but, to me, they are the industry leaders in that field... there are a lot of interesting features but i feel NI were the first on the ball for effects, looping and taking advantage of midi controllers (and 24-bit support)...

Probably, the cheapest (its 50% for most everything NI everywhere), simplest decent setup is traktor scratch duo with a midi controller of your choice (xone 1d which happens to be half off at moog also)... you can mix internally so no need for a mixer...

if you're not to picky about your controller, you can get away with a full dj setup for under 500$... pretty sweet considering that the amount I paid for a used djm-500 that lasted me 3-4 years before each channel had at least one deffect... and now paid 700$ for a nuo 4.0... silly me?
I'm feeling forward every thurs right now..

I'm feeling unplugged...again right now..

Moebius, I kindof totally disagree with you on the mixing point, you don't have to rely on synch to mix for you in traktor, it's an OPTION
